Perhaps one of the best leisure centres in te country!…read more The Waterfront in Greenock is a huge complex comprising of...wait for it...a 25m training pool, a wave pool, jacuzzi, the longest tyre flume in the UK, and outdoor swimming pool and a lazy river...an ice rink, a fitness gym, workout classes, spray tanning and much much more! If you're a fitness buff then you will love the gym, not so many people standing about adoring themselves as people actually training, so better than most. The changing facilities are some of the best I've ever experienced and all showers are individual for a welcome change...and they are power showers! Amazing. Gym can be quite expensive at around a 5er a pop but totally worth it!

They have "Ice Cold Fridays" on the rink which is skating but with a selection of dance anthems. On a Saturday nights it's "Sub Zero Saturdays" where they play the latest cheesy pop tunes. The toddler's swimming pool is the best I've seen with a tiny little double sided slide in it and lots of other watery attractions to keep little ones amused. For big kids like myself there is the body flume which goes outdoors and believe me you will know when you're going through the outdoors bit because your nipples will tell you! If that's not hardcore enough for you then you can always swim through to the outdoor pool which is heated but you won't be able to tell because it is still bloody freezing! We're Scottish though, we're hard and we can handle it! The gym has loads of great equipment which you would usually have to go to a private gym to find such as power plates, a climbing machine (which you can set to famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower which gives you a work out equivalent to climbing your chosen landmark!) and a ab solo machine which is a lot like those basketball games you get in arcades. If you're hungry after all that skating, swimming and working out then you can go and buy a delicious greasy sausage roll from the Waterfronts very own branch of Aulds! Random, but loving it

It has been part of the Antrim skyline for as long as I can remember and it wouldn't really be he same without it. It is a rather ugly plastic building but the facilities it offers is excellent. For some reason, there are security gates at the entrance. The receptionists do open them if you want to use the public toilets but otherwise you will have to insert the card given to you for your session to open them. It is about a ten minute walk from the Masserene Golf Club, five minutes from Clotworthy and fifteen minutes from the Lough Shore via Deerpark Bridge. The close proximity to Antrim's main leisure and tourist destinations is good. I can't really find anything wrong with it - the only thing is that the bowling alley is quite small so everyone goes to the big one at Dundonald Ice Bowl if they want a serious game of bowling.

There are also swimming lessons for babys through the week that mums or dads or grandparents can take their child too to help them learn to swim get used to the water and mix with other children in the pool. Antrim forum also has lots of other activities to take part in and all reasonably priced and it is much larger than you might expect from a relitivly small town leisure centre. There is also a soft play area which is ideal to take little ones too they love it and burn off lots of energy. Also easy to get to by bus or walking or car.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE OPENING HOURS DETAILED HERE ARE FOR JULY AND AUGUST…read more My family has a love-hate relationship with Waterworld. The kids love it and the husband and I hate it. Honestly, I find it almost physically painful to go there but my children get so much unadulterated pleasure from it that I grit my teeth and go. They don't see the heaving crowds, the film of god knows what on the top of the water and the toddlers with dangerously loose swim nappies. They don't hear the ear splitting noise or feel the cold blasts of cold air. What they see is the large pool with a Jacuzzi along one side, the water slides and best of all the huge pirate ship in the middle of the second pool, complete with water blasters, slides and rope climbs. When I describe it like that I can see why they love it so much. If your kids can swim, they will just love this place. You could still take non swimmers but you'll have to be very vigilant and follow them the whole time as they can go under the pirate ship where the water is about 4 feet deep. If your kids can be left unattended, you can have a rest in one of the Jacuzzis which are for adults only. Tinies can also enjoy the paddling pool. I am a bit of a germ phobe and thought the changing rooms and toilets could have been cleaner on our last 2 visits. Here's my top tip - if you are going during the summer hols, ring ahead and ask if they have a summer scheme booked in that day. If they say yes, then don't go as it will be unbearably busy. Ask which days there are no summer schemes expected and go then instead. You'll spend a couple of hours there so at about £16 for a family of four, it's pretty good value for money and will totally exhaust the kids for the rest of the day.

Just a pity it doesn't offer a bigger swimming area. There is a small cafe with a limited selection but ok for a snack. Children will have a great day out no matter what age they are. You will probably have a bit to walk as parking is not close by.

What is Vikingar? Ok bare with me here because it is a little bit odd…read more Vikingar consists of the "Viking Experience" which is a great performance put on in a theatre with lots of people dressed up, re-enacting battle scenes and telling stories from the Viking days of old. You then watch a film about Vikings and finally, if you're not all Vikinged out by then you can wander around a Viking museum type thing with lots of fancy multimedia bits and pieces which keep it interesting. I'm aware that I am not exactly selling it very well, but it really is a good family day out! As far as these kinds of things go, it is done really well. I haven't gotten to the strange bit yet though. At Vikingar there is also a gym, a swimming pool and a soft play area. How's that for random? I have only ever been to Vikingar for the "Viking Experience" so I can't comment on the other facilities except to say that I think it a very strange combination of historical learning and exercise. Go figure.

The Viking experience includes actors dressed in viking costume telling the tales of viking life. And recalling the tales of the Battle of Larg. At the end of the tour there is a film which lasts about 15-20 minutes, which again gives the viewer more information about the vikings lives and their culture. Fairly good value for money, very informative, but not a full day out.
