The pastor has been there for years and is known around the area as one of the best. This church is a strongly conservative, Bible-based church with family morals and values. But I'm not going to comment on the services -- that's entirely too personal and, honestly, I don't think that ever should be "rated." If you're interested in mystic Christian traditions, Greek Orthodoxy might be appealing to you. If not, then it's not. Here's the thing about my home church. It's located in The Acre, once the stronghold of immigrant labor working in the mills, now arguably one of the worst areas in Lowell (basically it's the projects). But as this is Lowell, the people are really quite nice and the neighborhoods aren't that bad. The Transfiguration Church (aka The Trans) is smack-dab in the middle of all of it, very unassuming yellow brick on the outside. But it's one of the best-kept secrets in the world. It's like sparkling geode of a place -- you crack the shell of its bland exterior and outside architecture to reveal one of the most amazing and ornate monuments to religious art in America. The entire interior of my home church, floor to wall to ceiling to dome, is totally covered in real glass and gold tile mosaic in traditional Greek Byzantine style. It took something like 30 years to complete, all spearheaded by the late spiritual father of the community, the Very Reverend Father John Sarantos, whom the street is now named after. (We all called him Father John.) He was a man of extraordinary vision who believed that the highest religious experiences should be matched by heavenly art -- made entirely and painstakingly by hand by the best artists. The art of the church was the extraordinary work of one man, Robert Andrews. In his work, everything shimmers and sparkles, the walls and ceilings breathe and ache with human hopes of heaven and eternity. I am not exaggerating when I say there is nothing, absolutely NOTHING in America like it. As I said earlier, I grew up in this church. Every Sunday I would gawk and stare in awe at the mosaics surrounding me, it never ceased to amaze me, even now. Every time new people come to the church -- visiting for whatever reason -- there's this phenomenal silence and amazement that comes over them when the church comes into their view. Their jaw just drops. It's a complete sensory overload -- art and religion melding in ways that are not normally seen in the Christian world, or in the US in general for that matter. Folks are just shocked that something this ornate and otherworldly exists in a Christian sphere--most people think of stained glass windows and white walls when it comes to churches, it seems. If you're ever in the area for the Transfiguration Church's Greek festival in the summer, they often give tours of the church. If you're not familiar with Byzantine art and Eastern Orthodox Christian symbology, such tours will help you understand what you're looking at (why certain images appear in different places, the function and purpose of the placement of certain icons -- absolutely everything has meaning, believe me). If mystic traditions of the East intrigue you, the Trans will give you a lot to think about. The Transfiguration Church is the pride and joy of Greek-Americans in Massachusetts and of the Lowell community. I feel extremely honored and humbled that I grew up in a place as extraordinary as the Trans, and that it was my second home for all my formative years.

When my wife gave birth to all my kids and when I had…read moresurgery the church members rallied and brought us meals every day for 2 weeks and they have done it for everyone. One of the leaders of the church would call me every Saturday to see how my family and I are doing. The church is full of seasoned Christians who want nothing more than to serve God. There is on average 30 -40 people every week and at least half of them volunteer to serve at the church all the time. This is a great fellowship to meet people to do life with. I highly recommend this church to anyone who wants to worship God and hear solid teachings.

The people are loving and welcoming, and work toward unity as a church family. I love the diversity in terms of ethnicity, love the children's programs and teachers, the (delicious) coffee hour and variety of music.....contemporary, as well as updated hymns. If you are looking for a church which stands on the word of God and whose people will walk with you on your journey of faith, here we are.

This is evident in the worship, instruction (including preaching), fellowship, and service. As a member I can say that, even during this current period of transition (seeking a settled pastor), the church has been taking an honest look at itself with the desire to become more faithful in all aspects of ministry and service. This is a solid biblically based church and school. The families that attend are welcoming. Our kids have a solid foundation in the Lord as they are heading out into the world and we are grateful.

This church played a very large role in the destruction of my relationship with my Mother many…read moreyears ago. They got involved in a very private family matter that they had no businesses being part of. I had nightmares for years from what the former church leaders said and did to me. For decades now I have made many desperate attempts to get my Mom back in my life. This church and some of the people in it have always come first and her family has come last. We have been tossed aside, abandoned, neglected, and forgotten so she can put all of her time, energy, and resources into this church. She even had them burn my beloved piano in a bonfire at this church. And yet no one saw a problem with that?! She has a woman who she has been living with her since shortly after I fled her house. This woman is controlling, manipulative, and abusive. She has had free room and board along with lavish vacations for decades all on my Mother's expense. Many people in this church also have been taking advantage of my Mother's generosity and blind allegiance to this church by enjoying free vacations at my Grandfather's Cape Cod properties. Meanwhile, her children and grandchildren are completely forgotten and ignored. She has abandoned us and despite my attempts to get help from the pastor and multiple people in the congregation, everyone keeps turning a blind eye to this. Many outsiders have witnessed the control and abuse by her "roommate" but no one in the church believes us. They just want to keep benefiting off of my elderly mother and my grandfather's inheritance that he trusted her to be in charge of. There is nothing Christian about abandoning your family and rejecting your own grandchildren. She plays the victim and has told lies about me and what really happened in order to excuse her neglect and soothe her conscience but everyone outside this church sees what is really going on. This church caused this issue with my Mom so many years ago and they have a duty and responsibility to help fix it. This is my last desperate attempt to save my Mother. I only pray that some of the Christians around her listen and help me.

Second, the church is replete with history and George Whitfield's legacy lives on. The Deacons give and incredible tour filled with history and they took us up to the steeple where we got to see the best view of the whole town and the bell on top made by Paul Revere. Wonderful service too. Great people and if you are visiting NewburyPort or anywhere near it o can tell you this tour was the highlight of our vacation!
