He had food trays left at bedside, and was unable to feed himself as he was left lying down. I requested a shower for him prior to him attending his wife's funeral, and instead " was given a very good bed bath!" He had been a shower a day kind of man. (it had been about 3 weeks after his fracture, and his last shower) He had unaddressed pain, and was left lying on his back , even though on a pressure relieving bed, he developed deep ulcers on his heels, and coccyx. We transferred him closer to home, and the facility that accepted him was horrified about the decubitus sores on heels and coccyx. He had lost apx 40 pounds while in the "Resort" as well. When trying to talk to a nurse about Dad, the phones went unanswered, and if answered, ( I let the phone ring 44 times) messages were not responded to. Thank goodness for a caring Social Worker, Jaime, who was our go to person ! She did manage to have our concerns addressed, but as she was not clinical, lacked information related to his health that we were concerned with. Cognitively, when he could hear, he was alert and responded appropriately, but had to have his left ear talked to. Communication between outside doctors and the Rehab, was poor, and he had surgical staples left in for well over a week after the orthopedist stated they needed to be removed. Dad passed away 21 days after he was transferred out of the Resort. I just wonder how much the poor quality care he received in Kansas City hastened his death.

There is obviously a nursing crisis. not the responsibility of the nursing staff. Therapy was good. Unfortunately, there was a breakdown of communication between staffs and the insurance agency. Social worker did her best, but I was not happy with how insurance, hospice/home health all worked together. My mom always seemed to come out on the bottom of the benefits pyramid. My mom has a pretty good Medicare /insurance coverage, but nothing is working in her favor. I don't think it is all the facility fault but I can't help but think there is some communication problems regarding the client assessments and the insurance company. I think more could have been done to represent my mom's situation. from the start, and things could have gone better.
