Every meat dish we had tried up to this point was disappointing in every aspect of the word: food was mediocre at best and expensive on top of that(Curse you Milan!). Nothing tasted as authentic as the food we had experienced in Venice (which was amazing for any seafood, pasta and dessert lovers). Turin was barely a destination on our trip: it was just a stop-over from our drive from Milan to Genoa, and I really didn't expect much from the city. It was the day after Christmas and close to dinner time, so after roaming the city and taking in the sights, we walked the back streets to look for a nice place to eat. We saw this restaurant tucked away and just walked in not expecting much. We had had 4 terrible meals in Milan and basically had given up on Italy, just wanting to go home to escape the bitter European cold. Tredarte made us want to stay. It certainly put the joy back in my trip. The ambiance was very nice and the decor was very hip and modern, but the food is still very classic and tasty here. The restaurant itself was very clean. I assume we also got there very early (around 7 pm) as hoards of locals seemed to flood in as it got later. The service was very good, meaning they spoke English (naturally rare in authentic Italy)! The server was very nice and patient, and translated and explained the menu to us item by item. I had a grilled veal chop/Costata di Vitello alla Griglia (looked like a rib-eye), giving the vaunted Piedmont chops one last chance before I called it quits. It. Was. Amazing. Grilled to medium-rare perfection, with a nice char on the outside which I love. Seasoning was on point; enough salt but not too much so that you couldn't taste the veal. The meat was juicy, meaty, not tough/chewy at all and lived up to the reputation of the region. Heavenly doesn't adequately describe how good that steak was. The best part of the meal came after the eating, when we got the bill. Tabs usually ran between 80-120 euros for dinner for my family, and the price of 2 steaks, a plate of lamb chops, plus dessert and a side of grilled veggies came out only to be 60 euros!! Super good deal for awesome food! All in all, Tredarte is reason why tourists should eat where the locals eat. The place was spot-on in flavor, the staff was great and it was the best bang-for-your-buck meal I had in Italy. It is definitely worth a visit if you're ever in Turin. Note: They also do lunch, and have wood-fired pizzas. They smelled and looked really good from where we were sitting! The prices are really reasonable too (5-8 euros per pie) and the pizzas were probably 12 inch pies with that charred crispy, thin crust I wish pizza in America had. I wish I had tried that but we left the next day :(
