I indulged in a large tub of popcorn (half the fun of movie theaters right??!) and was happily surprised to find they have individual nutritional yeast containers- along with the usual salt & butter- available to top off your popcorn! Overall, the experience made me very happy to return to viewing movies in theater! We actually planned to make it our first stop here at Pt Arena, as we'd Yelped a coffee shop here at the Pier that had amazing reviews but upon our arrival we were saddened that it had closed down and all that greeted us was a small pack of "fisherman" that were all on their 3rd Coors® Light by 0800... o_0 The Good: *Nice views of the ocean and some nearby cliffs. *Waters are calm enough for kayaking, surfing and diving. *I'm guessing you can charter a boat to go kill some fish. *There's a family of sea otters that lives here. Saw them too late to take a pic, tho... :( The Meh: *Most of the shops at the Pier have closed and, judging by the lack of activity, the rest will most likely follow suit. *This place has def seen better days, as all the surrounding buildings are not only mostly empty but in pretty bad shape. The Ugly: *On two separate visits this place was completely dead. Curious onlookers would stop-by have a peek and then bounce after a few minutes. I know because we decided to kill 1.5hrs there while we waited for our tour at the local animal preserve. *Quite frankly, this place is just plain boooring. Normally at a pier I'd have a blast doing street photography but after 30min here I wanted to hang myself out of depression. TLDR: Probably OK if you're going to out fishing or some other nonsense, but for the rest of us that just want to have a gander this place is a hard pass.

During weekends, the Cabrillo Light Station does full-on tours of the lighthouse all funded by…read morevolunteers. It entails walking about a flatish half mile (one way) on a paved road to the lighthouse, ending in panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, a couple of picnic tables, and even some cabins to rent, if staying a couple of days to unwind is part of the plan! On a Sunday morning after a canoe paddle down the Big River, we did the half-mile trek to the lighthouse. It was fairly busy, with 3 or 4 groups ahead of us. On the tour, volunteer guides on each of the four levels explain the need for the lighthouse, its inner workings, and how innovation and technology changed it over the years. There are four levels to climb: after the first flight with two handrails, there is only one handrail up the steps, making it a great core workout in addition to a historic and informational experience! After (or before) the tour, wander around the museum/gift shop, where there is a souvenir for every lighthouse aficionado to buy sprinkled with more historic information and pictures not only of the lighthouse, but also of the surrounding environment and wildlife. If lighthouses are your jam, the weekend is a great time to go with the tour, museum/gift shop, and even a place to stay if you want! Convenient to downtown Mendocino, after the tour, the charming downtown is a great place to grab a bite and do some shopping! Young and old alike, this is a great experience!

There was another small parking lot closer to the trail. We walked past the camp sites to get to the trail. The sites were on the smaller side, but all of them seemed to have a spigot. I used the flushing toilets before starting the hike. We did the Fern Canyon Trail to Falls Loop Trail- 6.2 miles. The first part was mostly flat, but there is some elevation gain for the loop. We went counterclockwise, but you reach the waterfall quicker if you do the loop clockwise. The 36-foot waterfall might not be the most impressive, but it was nice. There's a fallen tree trunk in between the two streams for you to sit and take some photos. We sat on a bench afterwards and enjoyed the views while having some snacks. I guess we got there at a good time, right before a crowd of people descended. Overall, the forested hike was nice and peaceful, and we also spotted a banana slug. There are some muddy parts though. I wished I read a bit more about the park before going. I would've wanted to do the short trail for Devil's Punchbowl which also has views of the bridge. Darn...

Serene quiet park…read more great photo spots! There's the iconic bridge but in order to get on that beach you have to walk on a narrow wobbling log in the water. Pretty scary for me. I finally did it, with the help of a very kind stranger who held my hand and it felt all better. Interesting how a lot of the fear is in your head. Why is there not a better safer path to get there? The only thing I wish they had at the meetup area/parking lot was a physical example of the storage basket on the bikes so that people could get a visual on what they could fit on there and have an opportunity to stash some items back in their car if it wouldn't fit. Customer service is top notch because they are responsive via phone and ensured that we got our lunch order in. Our guides Travis and Atlas were amazing and the confidence in their work really showed. I didn't realize their commentary during the experience was scripted (down to the jokes!) until I caught a repeat joke made, but I actually appreciate Skunk Train's efforts on consistent customer experience. The Railbikes on the Noyo experience is definitely a splurge, but I think it's worth the spend considering it's essentially a full day excursion and includes a sack lunch (you get to keep the lunchbox and the most adorable pin). We were in a rush heading back up the hill since it ran a tad late, so we unfortunately didn't realize we had left our lunchbags (with the pins still inside!) on our bike seats until we were long gone. My boyfriend reached out to Skunk Train regarding replacements and thankfully they were so understanding. Unfortunately he forgot to ask about the pins too so I am absolutely still devastated about that. Overall, I had a fantastic experience. Skunk Train also offers other excursions including shorter and more affordable options, but I'm glad I chose the Railbikes on the Noyo because it's perfect for couples and the amount of time spent on the rail was just enough and satisfying.

Visited Point Reyes Lighthouse after five years, and it's just as stunning as I remembered. The…read morecoastline and ocean views are amazing. We stopped by the visitor center, a big raven kept us entertained by making a lot of noise while perched on the building's skylight. I like the numbered staircase. It lets you know how far you have left to go, so you know exactly what to expect. The lower level of the lighthouse has been remodeled and is now open to all. It was fascinating to see the original gears, machinery, and equipment that once kept the lighthouse working.
