Glad to be back to the movies! Firstly, the arena theaters Covid safety protocols are on point! Every other row of seating is taped off to ensure social distancing.** An usher will escort you to your seat upon entering. You can grab concessions after you've been seated. I indulged in a large tub of popcorn (half the fun of movie theaters right??!) and was happily surprised to find they have individual nutritional yeast containers- along with the usual salt & butter- available to top off your popcorn! Overall, the experience made me very happy to return to viewing movies in theater! Looking forward to returning soon. **TIP: Get there early if you are particular about your seat selection, as the limited capacity means larger parties may be split up once the theater fills! read more

Cool older theater in an out of the way place. Not too big and not too small. Well maintained hardwood floors, comfortable chairs, and decent sound system. While having a drink at the bar at the end of the pier (separate review) while on a trip up there, I started talking to the man next to us. Turns out that, among other things, he runs the theater. Didn't own the building, but owned the business. He offered to give us a tour. So later we met him at his office (The Sign of the Whale next door), and he gave us a tour and some free movie passes. Cool place. Real butter on the popcorn, quality food, cool staff (we met everyone), and even the bathrooms have some style. The show recently released films. Not always the same week they were released, but within a week or two. With all the closing of the single screen theater's, we need to support them. So if you are in the area and have an couple hours, see a movie here. read more

The coolest theater in the Bay Area isn't in the Bay Area. It's located in the mighty metroplex of Pt. Arena where a collection of celluloid heroes have spiffified a little gem of movie-dom. While the venue doesn't sport the lousy pizza/good beer vibes of Parkway/Cerrito, they screen an outstanding array usually reserved for The Castro/PFA/Landmark chains, balanced by the usual lineup of blockbuster biggies. During coastal treks, I've stumbled into a German Gems double feature I missed at The Castro (with filmmakers/actors in attendance), a Truffaut film, a recent Marley doc, a collection of shorts along with big budget Star Treks, Avengers and such. They even have a film club where locals dissect this and that. Cool and truly refreshing. Staying at Sea Ranch? Zip up for a relaxing evening. (Few minutes early? There's a solid wine/beer place across the street). (NOTE: While video stores have been gasping for the last decade, one of the best still resides in Gualala. Want to see a labor of love? Better head there quick to get your Czech Westerns fix... It's a combination of the old Video Room meets the old Leather Tongues meets the old Professor Curtis meets REEL.) read more

I performed here with my band, Claudia Russell and the Folk Unlimited Orchestra. We have played all across the United States, and I have to say, the Arena Theater is perhaps the nicest venue we have ever played. The room is beautifully restored, with details that are truly artistic, like the backlit silhouette cut outs, or the perfect burgundy color on the walls, or the tile in the bathroom, or the perfect sound system. This place is run by a group of community volunteers, led by Cornelia, and they do a wonderful job of bringing culture to this great little Mendocino Coast town with a mix of first run films, live music and even live on-screen opera from NYC. I desperately want to give this place 5 stars. I feel I SHOULD give it 3 stars. I am compromising. When, WHEN there is a good movie playing here, this place is OFF THE CHAIN. Real butter on the popcorn, brewer's yeast, balcony seating, comfy chairs, nice staff, absolutely impeccably clean restrooms... I'm not sure it gets any better than that on a purely ammenities-based assessment, and that's ignoring the awesome indy, local goodness money-karma that comes with this place. HOWEVER. They almost NEVER have good movies. I get that it probably doesn't have the cash to secure first-run A-list Actual Movies, but holy fucking christ is the lineup here bad. They do have a monday night independent film series which is adventurous and laudable, if a bit uneven. Peaks and valleys - I go at least an hour out of my way to visit this theater when they're playing something I think I'll enjoy, I just wish that was more often. read more

This place must date back to the 20's or 30's, and has been immaculately restored. There is a huge camera in one window, and a beautiful box office out front. The light bulbs out the front look Vegas, and give a touch of excitement to the place. read more

A gem! If this were in Sonoma County-which is where I'm from-this movie house would be full many a night. Beautifully appointed with a thoroughly wonderful pride-of-place....AND A FULL-ON CURTAIN WHEN THE FILM ENDS!! This is not your big city multiplex. They show one film, have great popcorn, and are worth the visit if you're staying in Point Arena. If you're a movie buff, this little theater is a must! On Hwy. 1. Old school! Totally, like , going to the movies when I was a kid! Big screen experience, yummy organic popcorn with actual butter, and your neighbor is sitting a few seats over. First rate films on their first run! At $8 a ticket, it's worth saving a movie night during your escape from the big city. Can easily be a full night out with a bite to eat at Uneeda Eat right next door! And there is a family movie night deal on Sunday's, so bring the young ones! read more

Stopped here one night during an overnight stay in Gualala and was really impressed with this theater! I expected it to look like some of the grungy indie theaters in Berkeley, but it is actually really nice inside. The place was spotless and looked recently restored. They serve Franny's baked goods and real popcorn, the chairs were comfortable, and the theater was a decent size (not too small and not too large). I wish we had a theater like this close to where I live. I would frequent it all the time. read more

My wife and I had a really special experience at this theater. We were staying in Gualala, and both of us really like seeing movies in theaters and towns that are new to us. We had no way of knowing that this particular theater would be so beautiful. It is obviously a labor of love and was creatively, but tastefully, restored while also having a great screen and audio. One of the nicest theaters I have ever been to. When I watch Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on DVD (or whatever the current technology is) ten years from now, I will be reminded of the great space in which I first saw it. read more

When we are on our way to the coast, we check first to see what is playing at this theater. We love it very much. It is beautiful and well loved by all. Seeing shows here is better than anywhere else because it is intimate, comfy, clean, beautiful and a labor of love. A real art house. First time in Point Arena. We heard that a Brazilian Samba concert was happening there that evening. We got to meet the manager, Lou, who graciously got us in as we were hesitant. We were not disappointed. Venue was an authentic Brazilian Samba band, incredible music, voices, instruments, costumes and dancers. What a treat! We danced non stop til the end! The place was rocking! Amazing! Thank you so much Lou, a classy gentleman for a jewel theater. read more
