I wanted to find a date night for my husband's birthday and I got bored of dinner and movies. So I…read morehad a classic bad idea: "Hey, we haven't danced since our wedding! I LOVE dancing! Let's try dancing again! OK, maybe dancing isn't HIS favorite activity, but I'm the one scheduling it, right? What choice does he have?" This birthday outing was basically a bowling ball with the name Erin on it. A did a quick web search and found that on Friday nights, the Dance Scene has an hour lesson on a short routine within a style followed by a dance party (they're separate admission fees but can be combined - we paid for both). On date night, we arrived about ten minutes late to find the group working on an International Rumba routine, meaning, we were desperately lost and unprepared*. Since we couldn't follow the routine steps and the other people there were having some success, my husband didn't feel comfortable or happy staying for the dance party afterward. This was HIS birthday outing, after all, so I buried my disappointment and we decided to leave and find another activity. Anna the owner noticed we were having trouble keeping up and she was kind enough to offer us a free private lesson to make up for our bad experience (which, again, was totally our fault by virtue of arriving late!!). I didn't expect my husband to be interested, but we took her up on her offer and had a great time re-learning some basics of foxtrot and swing styles, and practicing our form. Our "frame" is pretty flimsy and our stride lengths probably never match, but I think we've improved! I'm personally excited to go back for another group lesson (though I might be going by myself... I'll just introduce myself to one of the silver foxes without a partner! Don't tell my husband). In regards to the private lesson: as a professional classical musician and private teacher of same, I've experienced hundreds of lessons from both the teacher and student perspective. I've got many friends and colleagues who teach as well, and whose methods (and results) I've observed firsthand. I've taught and been taught enough to know that, for learning efficiency and depth of subject knowledge, instruction must be tailored to the student. This probably sounds trite; ALL teachers would say that they tailor instruction to the needs of each student. MOST teachers, from my experience, don't tailor instruction. I wish I was better at it, myself. It's the hardest part of teaching. From a lesson alongside my husband, I observed that Anna does that gear-switching with the best of them. I can't recommend her services highly enough - literally, I'm not an experienced enough dancer to give her an objective professional review on how good a dancer she is. But I CAN give this review as one teacher to another: Anna is champion of pedagogy. *In regards to the group lessons being too advanced for us, Anna did assure us that they usually have two instructors in a group class and try to accommodate different dancing levels in the same evening to the extent possible. We came in too late and on the wrong night (her co-instructor had an outside commitment).

They also have cardio shimmy, pole classes, ballet and modern dance, samba, personal cultivation workshops for young ladies, and a host of other monthly themed events. Very reasonably priced $10-$20/class. A really empowering environment for young ladies and us seasoned adults. Tip: Last door on the right. The first doors are to the apartment lofts. I attended a ballerobics dance party. This event occurs every 3rd Friday and each month features a different theme. It is an exercise class disguised as a party ;-) I considered the event to be somewhat of a sampler of the many fitness classes that are offered here on a regular basis. The theme of this particular party was soca and reggae, need I say more??? The environment is very warm, friendly and welcoming even to a "shy", novice like myself. This class had about 20-30 women and 3 instructors throughout the course of the nite. Each instructor was very skilled and changed the vibe of the class with their unique personalities. We were encouraged to bring a refreshment to share and by the end of the nite had a great assortment. I cannot give away every little treasure that this place has to offer, but I will say expect to be taken outside of your comfort zone within a supportive environment while at the same time feeling liberated. I definitely hope to attend again and recommend trying it. It is an exciting alternative to a traditional workout. My concern was parking. It doesn't have a private lot, but at the time of day that I went (after 7pm), there was ample parking on the street. Note the new address: 1301 Lafayette Detroit, MI

Super kind staff make it very easy and then help you drill in to make it perfect. Highly recommend these folks.

I went here with a groupon, which came with one group lesson and two private lessons. I scheduled…read morethe group lesson over the phone and was instructed not to wear tennis shoes or rubber soles. They also had a 24 hour cancellation notice. Note to people with groupons - ALL of your lessons must be used up before the groupon expires, not just the first lesson. The group lesson was 30-45 minutes long. There were about 6-8 couples and 2-3 single ladies. The instructor introduced us to a few basic steps and had us practice them, rotating partners. Instead of holding hands, everyone touched palms as if frozen while playing pat-a-cake. This weirded me out a bit because I realized I had not touched anyone's palms (boyfriend excluded) in years... hahaha. But I will admit that changing partners was helpful for practicing, especially since the instructor did the man's steps, so we ladies got to practice with the instructor several times. We did the box steps for waltz, rumba, and foxtrot. After the group lesson, you could schedule your two private lessons. Each person/couple also received a sheet where we could note the steps we had learned and which instructor we had; Arthur Murray then keeps this on file. We ended up scheduling our two private lessons back to back, as they were 20-30 minutes each. In the private lessons, we reviewed the steps from the group lesson and learned how to turn and how to place our hands/arms so that we looked more like we were actually dancing and not that pat-a-cake thing. We were then given information on signing up for the real classes and were also invited to join a practice ballroom session where people just show up and dance, with instructors roaming around and helping. I think this might have been included in the groupon. We weren't able to fit the practice ballroom session into our schedule, so we ended up skipping it. I wanted to sign up for classes, but they were kind of pricey. I would definitely need a lot more classes/practice because I have two left feet and also a terrible memory. I get better each time in class, but then I forget the steps so quickly. :( The dance studio is located on Main, north of 11 Mile, across the street from Hollywood Market (and slightly north of it). If you are coming from the north, the building is really hard to see because the Arthur Murray sign only faces south, so get ready to turn right when you see the used car dealership. It's just after the dealership, and it's a brown brick building with a brown roof. For the longest time, they did not have a website, but now they do... finally!
