Everyone always told me what good care they received there, and I can attest to that. From the first day that she arrived they took great care of her, attending to her every need. I am so thankful to the many people that work at the Eastern Star Home for all the care they gave to my mom, the professional and loving way they took care of mom and myself. They showed Mom and my family such compassion that is helped my family at this difficult time. Everyone that works there is an asset to the Home and on behalf of my sister, niece and nephews I want to say a big thank you. Mom last days on this earth were spent in a place where she was loved and cared for.

The rehabilitation at the JFK acute rehab is fantastic. They treat patients with the utmost…read morerespect and compassion and they are extremely good at what they do. JFK Acute rehab came highly recommended for it's physical therapy and we were not disappointed in this one area. HOWEVER, On the other hand, the nursing and care the patients receive in their rooms is HORRIBLE; especially if they are suffering from any type of post-surgical confusion. Many nurses are completely insensitive to the patients needs or feelings. Nurses use restraints and netted beds regularly. It is not unusual to wait 20-30 minutes for a response after ringing the call bell. Doctors over prescribe sedatives because it's easier to drug the patients than take care of them. Before sending your loved one here, please do your homework. Although the PT and OT are great, the humiliation is not worth it.

In the beginning I noticed some improvement with her memory but that could been the result of the medication. Now we come to find that she was given the wrong medications and some were never even given to her the whole time. She was sent to the hospital several times due to low BP which I believe to be the result of the medication being mixed up causing her to have no appetite. I have witnessed the nurse call button be used and turned off without anyone ever coming in the room to check on my grandmother when we pressed it a second time it took yet another 20 minutes for someone to come in. After visiting hours my grandmother was basically left to her own devices if she had to get to the bathroom, she is in there because she is not steady on her feet and needs assistance walking, etc. Instead of helping their patients they put diapers on them and then leave it. Unbelievable. The place is outdated. Mixing up someone's medication is unbelievably dangerous and careless. Please do the research if you or a loved one needs to go into a rehab and find somewhere/anywhere other than here.

Less than 24…read morehours later, I demanded her discharge due to verbal and physical abuse by a night-shift CNA and unsanitary conditions within the facility. During the night, the CNA refused to assist my mother to the bathroom and told her to "go ahead" on her own. My mother explained that she had undergone hip replacement surgery just two days prior and could not ambulate independently, the CNA responded, "I don't want to touch you." When my mother asked for help getting back into bed, the CNA forcefully flung her leg, causing severe pain. When my mother screamed, the CNA stated, "I told you I didn't want to touch you." Later, when my mother again requested help to use the bathroom, the same CNA questioned her need, saying, "You really need to go again?" She then made inappropriate and distressing comments, asking who would help her at home. When my mother said her husband would assist her, the CNA replied, "If you do this at home, your husband is going to leave you." This behavior was cruel, degrading, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable--especially toward a vulnerable post-surgical patient. No one should ever be treated this way. In addition to this abuse, the facility itself is filthy. The room appeared poorly cleaned and unsanitary, which is especially alarming for a post-surgical patient at high risk for infection. These conditions only compounded concerns for my mother's safety, dignity, and overall care. I strongly urge others to carefully consider this experience before entrusting their loved ones to this rehabilitation center.

I was evaluated by a senior nurse, a PT staffer & an Atlantic Health primary care Dr. Social worker provided assistance to arrange home help care upon discharge. Being 77, it was unique to feel like the youngster in the crowd. No doubt most of the patient population are on a one way journey. The monthly birthday celebration included many who could not appreciate the festivities. Food service is adequate. Scrambled eggs at breakfast was better than decent. Snacks are offer. Spent a week last year at Kessler West Orange, a world class facility. For my current needs, Shady Grove was decent & approvable by UnitedHealth.

Some nurses and technicians were warm and competent, while others were irritable and dismissive. Getting assistance for my family member (and her roommate, for that matter), often required my leaving the room and searching for a staff member who could assist. Errors were made re. food allergies and medications. I do not recommend this facility for any patients who are not already ambulatory and able to advocate for themselves. The care coordinator was responsive when I called (although not on site) and there was some improvement afterwards, but not enough where I felt I could have my family member continue to stay there.
