I guess it's the law, you just have to have aging pop artists be the big draw on ratings week. To avoid long gaps watching PBS, especially during ratings week, they must be watched more than once or you're out of luck if you're chasing relatively commercial-free TV (their biggest asset). I speak for poor people on the prairie, trapped in double-wides and small homes, sucking the signal out of remote desert air. They may indeed, in their modesty, thrive on those excellent dramas from the BBC (although less "murder" please). Some of us are just tired of old pop artists milking baby-boomers. But AZPM--you're doing so much right too--just not all the time when you could be. Question: Why is Channel 6.3 going to waste on trivia most of the time during prime time? People want to be entertained, not learn to paint, while the rest of us crawl up the walls looking for something to seriously engage us in stressful times. Another question: Why do you think that on specific evenings your whole audience suddenly shifts to wanting to see only serious themes and documentaries? What's this rigid fixation with super-serious Monday's and Tuesdays when you air nothing but further depressing subjects (in addition to everyday life). We have the internet for all that. People need an alternative to the dull documentaries of limited interest on Monday's and Tuesdays.* It would help to spread them out. You may be underestimating Americans desire to escape (both ads and politics) for the pleasure of say, 800 Words, on a Monday or Tuesday after their grueling, stormy Monday hustling a living. A lot of folks kick back on weekday nights and are just tired of Antiques Roadshow and genealogy shows about the same old celebrities. *Note: The above paragraph does not include shows about animals and nature, history, or documentaries about time-critical issues of crushing importance like PBS's recent documentary on plastics pollution. Now if Gloria Lucas had a clue how to pick a Saturday night film that wasn't a cliché of the Sixties or Seventies, or one that hadn't already been seen by just about everybody over 12--Wow--that would be Nirvana and I would want to donate much more. You're just alienating the part of the audience that thrives and wants intelligent drama. Shows like Doc Martin and Grantchester, which you recently arbitrarily pulled. And "Midwives?" Again? Bad, bad choice for your rating's week alternative programming, and why I decided to write today. Have seen it over and over already, and I'm male too. On a positive note, bravo for airing BBC, because as you must agree, American production values, themes and styles are clichéd and trapped in a Hollywood bubble. They pale next to what the BBC creates. American TV--most all of it, across the board, is just terrible. Thanks for trying to free us of it. Lastly... AZPM, just try, try, try? to put more shows on about real people and positive themes. This "murder" fixation is another liability. Too, too many shows on solving murders. I'm regularly mystified by AZPM's program manager's failure to be practical and balanced in deciding which programs to air and when. I hope you're not losing me. Arizona Public Media is a station in Tucson, but it's hardly a station of Tucson. Unlike public media stations in other cities, AZPM can boast virtually no locally produced programming. We need not compare ourselves just to comparably-sized cities--the 2,000 residents of Marfa, Texas crush us with the original content coming out of their tiny radio station. That station, like so many other public stations, is a treasure that serves its community. But here in Tucson, AZPM's local news coverage, if one can call it that, consists of a few shallow, taped phone calls and material recycled from the Associated Press. In over a decade of listening, I've never heard our station break a story or cover unfolding news in a timely manner. Why isn't there a block of local news and cultural content every day? Why isn't there a podcast to bring all of that material together and make it something we might actually hear? Their cultural TV programming is infrequent enough that you forget it exists and their online video presence is barely present. The television side has shown glimmers of life recently, but most of it seems like a rehash of the insipid tourist-fodder you'd expect from Arizona Highways or Sunset. There is essentially no local cultural radio, unless you consider the gruesomely boring and irrelevant Arizona Spotlight "programming." I consider it a failure of editorial judgment. Arizona Public Media is somewhat redeemed by the national programs it syndicates but, even there, it is timid and late to broadcast new shows. Instead, they run jazz all night, which, for most people, is no different than going off the air. Public media is an awesome thing, but Tucson could do so much better. read more

This year I started working overnights and starting listening to bits of the Frank Show on the way home from work since no one actually plays music in the mornings. I was enjoying the Hollywood segment they do at 6:30AM and looked forward to it each day. Then last week I ran some errands and tuned in a little later than usual. I was horrified by the vile MAGA nonsense Frank and Christine were promoting. They actually think Greg Gutfeld is funny (???) and even though I've heard Frank say plenty of disrespectful things before about celebrities, he wasn't going to say anything disrespectful about Trump. Wow. Now it makes sense why he said a few months ago that he didn't understand the point of the No Kings protest and why KLPX allows advertising from that idiotic Intelligent Design place. I cannot support media that backs an authoritarian regime destroying the country. Switching permanently to KHIT 107.5. Never would have happened if the morning show hadn't gotten political. Why can't you stick to music???

Our family recently encountered a challenging situation while trying to honor a loved one's wish to donate proceeds from property sales to several charities. After selling two properties, we were surprised to find ourselves involved in a lawsuit from multiple organizations, including the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation (SAAF), Camp Born This Way, Eon Youth Lounge & Anti-Violence Program, LGBTQ+ Alliance Fund, Arizona Public Media, HOPE Animal Shelter, Habitat for Humanity Tucson, Tucson Pride, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tucson, Inc. The attorney representing these organizations is claiming that the properties were sold below market value. After the homes were sold, SAAF's attorney recruited the other charities to join the lawsuit. Prior to the sales, all beneficiaries were provided with Comparative Market Analyses (CMA) from licensed Realtors and full appraisals conducted by licensed appraisers, including interior and exterior inspections. These appraisals were performed in accordance with state guidelines to determine fair market value. Despite these thorough appraisals, SAAF's attorney has based his claim on a single drive-by appraisal and Zillow Zestimates, which are less reliable than professional appraisals. The CMA's and full interior/exterior appraisals that we provided were disregarded by their attorney and the charities. Drive-by appraisals, which are conducted without a full interior inspection, lack critical information about a property's condition and features. Similarly, Zillow Zestimates are algorithm-based estimates that often fail to account for local market conditions, unique property characteristics, or recent renovations, making them less reliable than appraisals performed by licensed professionals. This situation has been both emotionally and financially taxing for our family. We took great care to ensure the properties were accurately valued by involving licensed Realtors, appraisers, Title Companies, and State Home Inspectors throughout the entire process. This unexpected legal challenge has been discouraging and has caused us to reflect on how we approach future charitable donations. While we do not claim to know the motivations behind this lawsuit, the circumstances suggest that it may be driven in part by a desire for financial gain. We encourage anyone considering significant contributions or property donations to consult with experienced professionals and proceed with caution to help prevent these types of unnecessary legal challenges. read more

I have worked with media before in other cities, and not had the best experience. Rob and Joss have been amazingly supportive and always make us feel welcome . Everyone from the receptionist when you are buzzed in ( this is not a visit when you want business)...to every person in the marketing office is amazing!!!! Smiling people and friendly faces. I leave 94.9 on for my animals every day, and I listen to Rob and Joss every morning. This is a shout out to an amazing organization that supports a variety of local Tucson business. Well done!!!

I congratulate my friends who are keeping on keeping on at The Weekly, but just…read moreas with so many community newspapers, The Weekly's become a ghost of its former self, even more so of Tucson's late City magazine that was a paragon of community journalism. The ad revenues, all gone digital, just aren't there to support a lot of innovation. The online The Range, a summary of The Weekly, has better comments. However, editor in chief Jim Nintzel (whom I consider a friend), a talk-radio personality and former public TV reporter, is digging up plenty of new writing talent and reaching into Tucson's past to retrieve writers and contributors who, resigned to writing books and other such distractions from real journalism, remain eager to give it a go. That's something.... Of course, the food and music reviews are still competent. And so long as The Weekly contains Free Will Astrology and Savage Love, there's reliably entertaining substance. Plus, where else can you find out about most of what's happening in town -- music, art, and annual rituals? (Tucson lives for its rituals and its past, a constant deterrent to a lively contemporary political press.) The Weekly's biggest problem is its publisher, which rescued the Weekly but mainly publishes the glitzier, much thicker BizTucson and a rash of other Chamber of Commerce-suitable rags. It doesn't think kindly -- if it it thinks at all -- of restoring Tucson to its happier, hippier days. It's into building skyscrapers and defense-money and real-estate plays to kickstart Tucson's weak (some say, waning) economy. Like the bourgeois liberals who run the town, this publisher's into importing students to fill the new high-rise condos and bars and rent-a-workplaces "revitalizing" -- by redeveloping -- the historical Downtown, and all that sort of stuff. But the Weekly's plethora of medical marijuana ads is just too enticing. It's a self-contradictory situation. Not a kind environment for hard-hitting, critical, creative journalism. But The Weekly does the best it can, which is pretty good. I hope there's a real renaissance for it ahead in this town. Without it, we have no other real community media, only a single community radio station where vanity DJs rule the roost and community news mainly consists of a one-hour Democracy Now! feed each noon. Every bit of discourse counts.

It is so surprising, as the NHL records a higher attendance at games than the NBA. I need to find a better radio station... And what is with the political insult at the opening and during breaks of the show? It doesn't make any difference what your politics are I would think most sports shows would be devoid of politics?
