As I was getting close by I was definitely getting into Amish country. Neat. Arriving at 9:00 in the morning Sunday there was only one other hiker. I grabbed my bag and camera and hiking stick (monopod) and went straight up the Fort Trail that climbs about 400 feet to the top. With the sun glistening low on the horizon I got some nice fall colors, though I could tell that the autumn peak has past. At the top there were a lot of trees so the views below seemed rather obscured. The trail loops around the hill and you can either head back to the parking lot for a roundtrip of about two miles, or you can grab onto the other trails. I ended up taking a Deer and Gorge trail combo which meanders around a creek and some carved out rock formations. Some tips would be to grab a map either by printing online or the kiosk at the trailhead should have some brochures. A compass would be helpful since large segments of the trails go in one direction so you can judge where you are on the map. At trail junctions there's sign posts telling how many more miles it will take to get back to the parking lot. Being Autumn the Deer/Gorge trails is sometimes hard to make out since not as many take the trail compared to Fort. If that's the case just look for signs of diced up timber or spray paint on the trees. If you're totally lost just trace back where you came from or if all else fails just head north until you hit the road. Also the climb up Fort hill is steep so a hiking stick is recommended. The Deer/Gorge trails can get slippery because it runs alongside the main creek and also crosses some fingers feeding into the stream, so boots are highly recommended. After the hike I stopped by the museum and there's some displays about the history of the hill and surrounding area. There's a donation box inside as well.
