More than a year ago the internist at Peak Vet in Williston put my dog on a high steroid dose and essentially told me that she would never get off them given her endoscopy results. I had a hard time believing steroids were the only option and there wasn't something else that could be done. It was a difficult to get attention from my doctor or have any of her energy put toward the problem once the diagnosis was made. Her mind seemed to be made up and the book was closed. Please understand, Peak is considered an amazing place and has a great reputation, but this practitioner, at the very least, didn't seem to want to try to scratch the surface of the problem or explore other solutions once the diagnosis was made. Probably because she firmly believed it was a waste of energy and there weren't other ways to fix things. Many doctors are like this. But I have seen enough in my life to realize that western medicine's approach isn't always the only way. There is still so much to be learned about health. Healthcare practitioners are making strides but they don't have all the answers. No one does. Very frustrated, disheartened and tired, I started to explore other routes. I saw lots of other vets and behaviorists, etc. I sifted through the info and then I explored options. Thank god I went to Qi. Coleen and Nate at Qi were willing to try different approaches. Granted, initially the approaches they tried with diet didn't work, and we had to try various things because my doggie doesn't even fit in a mold with Eastern medicine ( ; ) ), but at least Qi tried and listened to me. And eventually, we've crafted something that is working. A year later my pup is on 1/24th of the previous steroid dose (even less if you consider she's only getting steroids once every two days now) and almost at the point of being off entirely. She's on a brand new homemade diet and Chinese herbs that soothe her belly and her mind. I'm not saying she's now perfectly healthy. She has a chronic condition and will never be able to eat the varied diet she used to. But with the herbs/meds and with a realization how much diet and stress affect her, her condition is now manageable and she's happy. Bravo to Qi and its staff for being willing to try different approaches and take the time to question the norms. My pooch has made Qi question things they normally do, as she doesn't always fit the mold, but with trial and error, caring and developing a relationship with us, she's 90% better than she was 9 months ago today. Thanks to Coleen, Nate, Jeff, Dez (no longer there) and the rest of the staff for having a heart and being problem solvers, investigative and open to questions and different solutions. If only more doctors could follow this formula!

Penelope's diabetes wasn't diagnosed in time to save her. Dr. Knox and the staff treated me with such kindness after the loss of Penelope. Along with Dr. Kerry Lindemuth (a visiting veterinarian), my Penelope truly received the best veterinary care possible. Any person who has Dr. Knox as a veterinarian is truly fortunate, especially for mature/senior animals.

The vet knew us for two years since we brought him as a puppy, and always acted surprised and annoyed by his energy upon welcoming. Making comments like "woah woah" and then heard them talk to a vet tech behind the door while we were in the room, and said "better be ready, if you're not woken up yet, he'll sure wake you up! Very crazy!" And that just upset me. We are going to a new vet now, and the vet is very accommodating to my dogs needs, welcoming him and being friendly while he warms up. He received an exam and all of his booster shots and when I asked for a prescription for his flea and tick and heart worm meds, the vet was resistant to allowing me to fill it at the pharmacy I had been doing business with before. She insisted I try a different med stating it would do the same thing, and be much cheaper at her pharmacy. I agree to try it and she gave me a free sample that he would try in December (this month). He hated it and this chewable medication was as hard as concrete. I called the office to request prescriptions for the meds he'd had been on, and was met with resistance because I was going to have them filled at Chewy's pharmacy. the difference between the vets pharmacy and Chewy was $125.00. when I spoke with Chewy, they told me that Essex Vet refuses to work with them as far as confirming prescriptions is concerned, and I would have to send in the prescriptions myself. Essex vet refused to send me the prescriptions stating that it was against corporate policy to do so, and if I wanted them I would have to pick them up in person. Did I mention that I'm blind? Sometimes it can take a week or longer to get rides. I did finally got them and sent it in by mail to Chewy. I meanwhile called Essex Vets corporate office, and the person who called me back assured me that there is no policy against sending prescriptions to customers. By the way they are owned by Blue River. The corporate person I spoke to asked if I minded if she spoke with the vet about my complaint and I said that would be fine, and maybe it would improve the level of service provided. I never heard back from either one of them. I got the prescriptions from Chewy without any problem, at a much better price, and in time to continue his meds without interruption. The only hitch was that Essex Vet only wrote it for six months, not the usual year that vets normally do. so I will have to pay for another vet visit from someone else in six months to get his meds prescribed again. I'm 76 years old, had dogs most of my life, and have never run into this kind of treatment from any of my dog's vets. I've since spoken to other vets who have assured me that they do business in a very different way and would be happy to have my dog as a patient. To describe what this vet did as petty and unprofessional is an understatement.

I've been going here for my rats for a few months now, and they've always been kind and considerate no matter what's going on. They're also extremely knowledgeable about the care of specific animals under the small pets category, not just "pocket pets" as a general category. It's clear that they see many exotics regularly and don't treat all small pets like the same animal. They even offered nebulizing for my pet rat that had a URI, and seemed very familiar with treating this common issue in rats. Though no vet care is cheap, I always feel like I'm getting my money's worth here; I've seen multiple exotic vets at Essex (at least 4?) and they're all top notch, I feel comfortable with all of them. Essex Vet has also been able to get me in on short notice before, which while not expected, is always a nice bonus. They've also got a text line that can be used to check in post-op, ask questions, or schedule appointments which is incredibly helpful. I've had to get two of my pets put to sleep, and I'm glad that I was able to do it here. Everyone was extremely kind and considerate. The vet who had seen one of my boys previously (for the issue I put him to sleep for) even came in to validate my decision to let him go, which was really comforting and a huge relief to me. The staff at Essex Vet are very qualified and I'm happy to trust them with my pets' care. In addition to their knowledge, they're able to provide flexible appointment scheduling and a warm environment. I'd definitely recommend anyone, especially those with exotic pets, to go here for their pets' care.

I feel they go above and beyond to do post visit follow ups, really take the time to listen to your concerns and to answer all questions. My main vet is Dr. Miranda and she is just wonderful. I have a special needs cat and Dr. Miranda always takes the extra time with her as needed, to ensure we have her on the right wellness plan. When my parents were staying me long term and their boys got sick, the hospital allowed them to become patients and they took really good care of them. Dr Farrell was helpful when my mom's one cat needed more urgent care. I have met Dr. Crawford and she is also a delight. This entire team is so compassionate and caring; I feel fortunate that this practice is so close to my home.

Some vets treat FIV like a death sentence and won't give these cats the time of day, but everyone at AC treats our little ones like beloved royalty. They take their time and answer all of our questions, and did a TON of research to share with us the best diet, supplements, and lifestyle changes to keep our cats healthy. We are not rich! Not by a long shot. We have small income, live in a small apartment, do not have money to toss away on unnecessary expenses. We've never felt that the vets at AC order gratuitous labs or x-rays or anything, and they always bring up the matter or cost very non-judgmentally in a way that would make us feel comfortable declining if we decided to do so. I've never felt pressured to do something I couldn't afford. We have never been pressured in the slightest to buy food or supplements them, they've always been completely fine with us buying from amazon or wherever I can get the best deal. Our cats are our family, truly. They have had rough lives before we adopted them and it's our honor, duty, and absolute pleasure to make sure they are happy and healthy for the rest of their lives. I would NEVER bring them to a vet where I felt that the cats or we as owners were being disrespected or where I felt they were getting sub-optimal care. Affectionately Cats has not only met but exceeded my expectations for two decades and I can't imagine ever going anywhere else.
