I've lived around the area for quite a few years now and I swear if I could live here I would. 9 out of 10 times that I land myself in there I walk out with a couple of books. The staff there is super friendly, I actually love walking into that place for the books as much as the people in it. They've got little clay face sculptures all over the place in here. It's convenient how they've put old wooden furniture all around the store so that you can take a load off while you're browsing. Their prices are really reasonable - I found some James Joyce for only $2. The store has a good amount of breathing room, in case you're claustrophobic, and it's pretty well organized. read more

Pretty good. Better than a lot of the little holes in the wall in the city, but of course not as great as the massive and cheap Myopic. Still, their prices are pretty good, and they have large sections of basically everything but fiction/literature, which is sadly lacking. read more

If given the choice between any Border's or Barnes and Nobel and Armadillo's Pillow, I'd choose the latter every time! A fantastic selection of low priced used books, paired with a cozy, almost bohemian atmosphere and, of course, lots of big comfy seating, make this hole in the wall a wonderful place to hang out. read more

Do not go to Armadillo's Pillow with a book in mind. While you certainly might find the book if you do, that destroys the joy of going here. Just come, mind open, and browse. Browse through the general fiction, the genre fiction, the non-fiction of assorted types and interests, the cooking books, hell, even the children's books. Feel the joy when you find that one book that someone recommended five years ago that you forgot about and is only $2.50. Browse for hours, finding things you forgot you wanted or never even knew you wanted. Sit on the chairs and read a chapter or two. Feel the love. Feel it. read more

This place is cute, and the selection is broad enough to keep those with multiple interests busy browsing. As used bookstores in Chicago go, it's not a gigantic selection, but each section is well represented and the atmosphere is friendly and warm. The prices seem very reasonable for the book quality and I like that Rogers Park has a cozy bookstore to offer right on Sheridan. Used bookstores are a blessing! I like the incense, too. read more

I can spend just a few minutes in here browsing a section for something that catches my eye, or I can lose an hour or more taking it slow and enjoying the hunt, looking over each section. I haven't ever come in looking for something in particular, but I have yet to stop in without coming out with something I didn't know I needed. Helpful staff that never discourages you from grabbing a seat and relaxing a while. read more

The cozy atmosphere will reel you in, the prices are reasonable, the staff - all friendly. There's not a whole lot to dislike about this place. I could probably hang out for a couple hours in a cubby reading and potentially buying. It's a small store, but the interior is so unique, you'll feel right at home. read more

YES. This place is a dream. I would if I were a cat that I could nap between piles of dusty books or on an eclectic upholstered chair ... *sigh* It feels, looks, smells, and sounds JUST like a used bookstore should. There are books on the floor, stacked on shelves all the way up to the ceiling, and on small tables throughout. Please go now it's beautiful. Left with 5 titles, some hardback, for about $20. My friend told me that I have to go check out this bookstore, as I would just "love it". So since it is right around the corner from where I work, I finally made a stop there (after getting some starbucks from across the street). And its quite adorable! And they seemed to have a good selection of books, and plenty of comfy looking seats to look over the books you are thinking about buying. I definitely think if you appreciate and love books (I do!) you will appreciate and possibly love this quaint little independent store. read more

Went on Tuesday night to watch open mic, vey nice little independent bookstore, lots of art and jewelry in the store, much of it made by the owner I think. Their selection of books is impressive and prices super reasonable. The music was good, but some of it was a bit too depressing. I will return to browse book and hear more tunes. read more

This is a great neighborhood book store. The staff is helpful, and the place has a quirky, fun vibe to it. They do very fast special orders- and I just love stopping in to browse (they aren't pushy and they make you feel welcome) because the selection on the shelves is so much more unique and interesting than the selection offered at the big-box stores. No big magazine collection here, and no coffee shop... but if you like to read, its worth a trip to RP to check out this great little bookstore! read more

I love this book store. Very comfortable and groovy.

The place is neat, which is appreciated by me (most used bookstores, unfortunately, are not). I stop in once in awhile, but there doesn't seem to be much rotation in the variety of books offered. It's fine if one just wants a general paperback to read, or some scholarly works. I like that the place is quiet, and the salespeople don't hound customers. read more

This little bookstore is packed with books and has a lil of everything. Usually, I came in with the expectation to buy a book or two and came out with several...lol. Stinky incense smelling book store you can get lost in for an hour or so. Feel a little like you're entering a wizard's cave here. Definitely a place to find unusual books and unfashionable authors (but not with any consistency), and its got lots of pokey places to chill- literature up on a raised dais, occult feeling front room, and stacks of genre books in the back. I almost want to give it three stars-the selection could be a little better, and the young owners are never chatty- why is the grumpy condition so endemic to used book store owners?- and they're stacks are frequently all mixed up with piles on the floor and editions sometimes quite ragged. Which is fine, right? It's what you want int he used bookstore experience. May this place, live on 4EVA! Why isn't there one of these in every neighborhood? read more

I really wanted this place to be great. They have great selections mind you and I found a dusty old Norton First Folio tucked away in a corner (it looked like it had been sitting there for years) it had the cover and original price on it $100, pretty reasonable for a new folio I thought. So I took it up to the desk. After waiting about 10 minutes for the lady to finish smoking in the back she tells me their price is $250 for it. I'm sorry, but you can't gouge your prices like that at a used book store. I would've paid the original price but charging more than double the original price for an old book you got for free is a scam. They clearly don't take any pride in their books either since the drama section floor was covered in fallen books and I had to stack them to be able to get into the section. Found the same edition of the norton folio on Amazon for $75 guess I'll just continue to shop on Amazon. read more

Let's save Armadillos Pillow! The owners of this little used and rare book shop are struggling to keep it open. These types of businesses are so important for Rogers Park, so let's support them by buying a few more books. This is one of the first places I checked out when I first moved here, and I loved it immediately. For the space, it has a great selection of books from all genres. They also sell Nag Champa, little plastic toys, and jewelry. I always find something I want and have often found something I needed. When I was looking for books in particular genres, the staff had me fill out an index card with what I was looking for in case anything showed up in their shop. read more

I honestly love this store. I can't say that I always leave with a book in my hand, but I love that I can browse the store without the clerk or owner looking at me with hawk eyes. I always go there after seeing a movie at the theater across the street. I love that I can sit down in the chairs all over the shop, and test out each book. I love the vibe that the store has. I wanted to get a good beach read and remembered passing Armadillo's Pillow a few times before. I rode my bike and survived the combat zone traffic on Sheridan and finally arrived. Instant Ahhhhh. This place is so groovy/hippie/60's/70's relaxed. The owner couldn't have been nicer and didn't even laugh at me when I said I wanted a beachy chick book for the afternoon. Although there isn't a specific section for beachy chick books, he asked me about some of my favorite fiction authors and sent me in the right direction. The books are very well organized and the selection is great. The books also seem to be in really good condition. The place feels kind of magical with it's velvet curtains, funky colors and beaded chimes hanging about. It's the kind of place you could curl up in for hours on a rainy afternoon, or just run in for the right book on a sunny one. Either way, I'll be back. read more

if you walk in and say, "there is a science fiction book that is from the late 70's, early 80's my sick boyfriend wants to re-read and i think the authors name starts with an a" and the guy can point you to the piers anthoney section, that is skill. totally nice, super helpful, and really well read. even if you don't know what you want to read, they do. read more

This store is awesome! The owners make all the earrings and necklace by hand, plus all of The Gathering Crowd ceramic faces that decorate the walls. This store is warm, has a great book selection, and if you can't find what you want--- ask! They will most likely get it for you! I love this bookstore and would much rather give my money to smaller indies like this as opposed to big ol' corporate bookstores! read more

Terrible used bookstore. Kids crawling around the floor yelling and playing some kind of game; two older men talking about how they used to get high and go to ethnic restaurants and demand "make it like you eat it". This conversation was problematic on many levels, not least because one of the men works there. read more

I actually checked this store out when I was apartment hunting up in Rogers and I fell in love. I love little book stores like this. Armadillo's Pillow has an awesome selection and is really organized (which I loooove). I found an old poetry book here that I had been looking for EVERYWHERE and when my mom was visiting she found a bunch of children's books for her daycare. I like to go here when I'm bored and just browse around...I can always find something! read more

When I can't figure out what I want to read, I go to a good used bookstore and see what comes to my attention. Armadillo's Pillow is one of my favorite used book stores. I enter the store and it is as if I stepped into a wizard's library. There is the scent of incense in the air, quiet music in the background, and comfortable places to sit and read a book that attracts my attention. I have found some of the best books I never knew I wanted to read in this store. read more
