The slaw bowls are reasonably priced and satisfying, the menu has a nice variety, and who I think is the owner is very friendly and welcoming and enthusiastic - like a guy that seems like would be fun to hang out with and talk about anything. It's upstairs and probably easy for some to miss as it's the only thing upstairs, but they post signs outside and inside near the stairs, and they've been here awhile, so it must be doing well. As you can see, the slaw bowl comes with a good amount of protein, a few chips, and a variety of ingredients to go on top of the slaw. I've had chicken in the past, which is also good. Just one piece of chewy meat this time, which happens. Flavor is very good and satisfying and the slaw keeps things feeling pretty light and healthy. I've had burritos in the past too, and those are more filling. There's ample seating area as well, with a buzzer to let you know when your food is ready. Self-serve drink taps for soda and to get water. Always enjoy coming here and I'm sure we'll eat here many more times in the future. I just need to venture out a bit and try more menu items.

With those items we tried their mild, hot, and avocado salsa's that did a nice job of adding to the flavors of our entrees. We also tried the chips and guacamole that we really liked, and you get a lot of guacamole for the price. The young man who took our order gave us a great explanation of how they prepare the salsa's and took us through the preparation of the meats and seafood items. This place is in the second floor of the SLO Public Market with lots of seating both indoor and outdoor. We are definitely glad we tried this place.

Honestly, Efren's doesn't look too promising. My first impression was that it would be just another…read more'fast casual' burrito place. I could not have been more wrong. The first clue was that there is more on the menu than just tacos and burritos, and our attention was drawn to Siete Mares (seafood soup) and caldo de res (beef soup). Both were outstanding, aside from having to deal with the crab legs (real crab, not that fake krab stuff), and the bones in the beef soup. The stock in the caldo de res was rich and beefy, and tasted as if it had been simmering for hours on a back burner. It had a fullness of flavor that made you think of some abuelita's kitchen table. The service was also very efficient and friendly, which is always a plus. Go for the soup.

Every single time I'm there they act like they're doing ME a favor. The frowns couldn't be more brutal. -Have bathrooms. Until recently, they've been closed 90% of the time..... not just 15 minutes before close... at 5-6pm, you know, when people need them. Please keep them open. -80-90% of the time the meat is dry as a bone. -Salsa bar was BONE DRY at 6:30. Literally nothing. None of the ladles could even reach anything. I went to walk to the register, no one was in line, the employee saw me coming and quickly walked away. She knew what she was doing! They could make a killing here.... But this is what all the people in the neighborhood say. Such a wasted potential.
