I thought I was doing the right thing by offering to donate a large selection of books that had…read morebelonged to my father. These were not "junk" books, but actual nice quality items. When I wrote to the Grover Beach Community Library about the donation I got a very harsh response from Nan Fowler. I realize she owns a used book store in Grover Beach and so that makes her the "expert" but quite frankly with her attitude I don't see why anyone would want to shop in her store. Perhaps my experience is unique, but it doesn't seem that the Grover Beach Community Library really wants donation of books unless "they are old Hemingway etc. that is different". Ms. Fowler's exact words to me. Bottom line is she could have been a bit more gracious and just told me they weren't interested instead she felt compelled to send a drawn out e-mail that I found to be very insulting. Needless to say I won't donate books to this library, won't shop any of their used book sales, use this community library or spend one cent in Ms. Fowler's bookstore.

The first floor is a multi-purpose area that serves as a theatre in the summer for on-going readers theatre programs exploring stories from local history, from the Dunites to Halcyon to remembering the Village in the 1930's. The live, one-hour, free programs play every Saturday during the summer at 2PM. The huge annual rummage sale is held here the first weekend in November. As you wait for them, or wish to explore, they are right next to the historic AG bridge, Kiwanis Park/AG Creek, Centennial Park, the Swinging Bridge, & more. On Saturdays at Noon, there is a Farmer's Market. AG Village is a cute restored town, that has numerous shops, antiques, diverse eats, pizza, ice-cream, coffee, wine, steak, Italian, Greek, Mexican, vintage butcher [AG Meat Co.] & bakery [Eclair]. Many of the shops are house in restored or original buildings over a century old, along with amazing ceilings [Coffee] or original woodwork. Beautiful bookstore with cats, books, and a cozy atmosphere!!…read more They have so many books that are expertly and carefully organized into easily browsable sections. I saw so many great, used books in the classic literature section I wanted, but I currently have way too many books I need to read and so little time, I didn't purchase any during this visit. But I am definitely coming back in the future to stock up on good reads! The kitties that roam the bookstore are also so freaking adorable. There are three: and orange tabby, a fluffy calico-looking kitty, and a grey and white kitty. The grey and white one greeted us instantly when we walked in, and s/he definitely made us feel welcome and at home. The other kitties were so adorable and friendly too! They weren't as affectionate as the grey and white one, but they let us pet them and looked so content in the bookstore. Rest assured I'll be buying my future books from Nan's, and I encourage anyone who finds themselves in Grover beach or the 5 cities to stop by and pay this magical bookstore a visit.

My experience with the Arroyo Grande Police Department was that after an abusive altercation while…read moredisabled, newly pregnant, homeless, and fleeing domestic violence from an ex who was violating multiple 10-year protection orders I sought safety and medical assistance but was instead criminalized into the judicial system creating a record preventing me from my job and basic safe housing needs options during a moment of crisis. I wasn't being helped by the county's public human services department despite asking for assistance multiple times over the past 5 years, which left me in a desperate situation. At the time, I was experiencing homelessness, severe trauma, health complications on top of disability's, and impaired judgment due to overwhelming circumstances. Rather than receiving protection or a trauma-informed response, I was treated as an offender after finding a wallet while in an altered state of mind due to homelessness, trauma and disabling medical distress needing immediate refuge. Even after returning the wallet & full repayment, since that incident, instead of receiving protection, the Arroyo Grande Police Department targeted, profiled, and criminalized me, while failing to recognize the severe abuse and dangers I face, even when I later became the victim of a robbery by another Arroyo Grande resident they didn't take equal actions against the other Arroyo Grande resident who had actually robbed me, showing clear bias and unequal treatment. The one commendable act I can acknowledge is that on one occasion officers personally returned my service dog to me, rather than transferring her to animal services. However, the broader handling of my case reflected clear bias and unequal treatment, targeted profiling, and continued criminalization, showing a serious lack of understanding toward survivors in crisis. I hope the department will improve its training in trauma-informed practices and ensure equal, compassionate treatment for all community members, especially those seeking safety from abuse.
