Beautiful bookstore with cats, books, and a cozy atmosphere!! They have so many books that are expertly and carefully organized into easily browsable sections. I saw so many great, used books in the classic literature section I wanted, but I currently have way too many books I need to read and so little time, I didn't purchase any during this visit. But I am definitely coming back in the future to stock up on good reads! The kitties that roam the bookstore are also so freaking adorable. There are three: and orange tabby, a fluffy calico-looking kitty, and a grey and white kitty. The grey and white one greeted us instantly when we walked in, and s/he definitely made us feel welcome and at home. The other kitties were so adorable and friendly too! They weren't as affectionate as the grey and white one, but they let us pet them and looked so content in the bookstore. Rest assured I'll be buying my future books from Nan's, and I encourage anyone who finds themselves in Grover beach or the 5 cities to stop by and pay this magical bookstore a visit. read more

I love this bookstore. I am a teacher and And buying books for the classroom library can get very costly. Coming here and buying books that have been previously loved by others is great. The prices are amazing and the staff is very kind. I love that it's run by family and friends. There's also a fuzzy little cat that likes to roam around the bookstore. Have a seat open a book and cuddle up with a cute little kitty. Not only can I buy previously loved books but you can bring your books to the store to trade in for store credit. They have a variety of books from children's, young adult, mystery's, love stories, sports books and more. Definitely a place to check out if you're looking for a goo read more

Books and cats? My two favorite things in one place! We had actually been here before over a year ago when visiting and loved it so much we made a point to come back again on our trip. This bookstore has a massive selection and a lot of great titles to choose from. On top of that, there are two friendly bookstore cats roaming the store and they are just the cutest and sweetest. Best prices for the best books selection around! So as avid readers we like old and new titles from a range of different authors. Whether their title/cover buys, or titles something we like the sound of we know nan will have it for us! They have such a range of genres as well as lengthy and titles that we can always find our way. Having an updated collection is great and they also take much time to make sure the prices and quality of the physical is good as well! They have fiction,nonfiction, sci-fi, mystery, children's books, and plenty of others. they also started selling crystals as well offering a range of products! Service here is always amazing from both the owner and her husband! After taking over the store from her grandmother, the business has only stayed as important and is running smoothly! The kindness and knowledge of both make the environment welcoming to all! Parking wise, there's a lot of spaces for everyone as the center isn't particularly busy during the day. Placed right in the middle of downtown, there's plenty to do around for food and drinks! one warning is there are cats inside (which are very friendly) but in case anyone has allergies this is just warning. read more

Visiting out of town and driving through Grover Beach on Halloween. I was greeted immediately by a friendly, smiling and helpful staff. I was accompanied through their variety of aisles by one of their few lovely cat friends (The orange tabby). Wonderful selection on classic books at an amazing price. I left with 4 decent size books which would've costed me over 70+ dollars at Barnes and Noble and only ended up costing me 32 dollars. 8 dollars per book is phenomenal! Lovely, cozy store and a compassionate staff who really care for the customer. It makes me sad knowing I can't experience this weekly. Give this store all the business they deserve read more

They have a lovely selection of used books. Maybe even more importantly they have two friendly shop cats. Jay Katsby jumped in my lap and stayed for quite awhile. And considering my cat had passed away recently, it was the cat therapy I really needed in that moment. It has become a very special memory of this little book shop. The atmosphere was both calm and charming, and it was a great surprise to find these two kitties inside! The owner was very welcoming and answered all the questions I had. One of my favorite used bookstores I've been to in a while. The store is so organized and the books are well taken care of. There's something for everybody: classics (great selection), coffee table, sci-fi (huge), essays, children's, etc. the cats there are lovely and will even jump in your lap! We stopped by during our weekend getaway because I can never say no to a second hand bookstore... you never know what gems are waiting! The gems I found here made my trip beyond worth it! While I only found one book for myself, I was able to find a lot of early reader chapter books for my son. I was surprised with how many books I was able to find for children and bought as many as I could for my little bookworm. The value of the books are a great deal, half price off the cover price unless otherwise noted. The ladies that run the store were super friendly and the cherry on top were the adorable cats in the store. The one I'm holding in the picture was so gentle and let me hold her. I'm sure the other would have too after hearing the ladies talk about their friendly demeanor and how they love being cuddled. I will definitely back the next time I visit Grover Beach! read more

Amazing store !! I think this should say it all. There are tons of books in the store. The cashier was friendly and helpful. Books are sold at mostly 1/2 off of the cover price. There are so many books and they organized by type and author. I bought a bunch to read on the road. I wish we could find more places like this every place we travel to. Love it. read more

There are so many books, so little time to read them all. I came across this store on my way to buy some baseball cards down the street, and man, am I glad I stopped and checked them out. The store is filled with tons of shelves full of books. Everything is organized by selection, and then the books are in alphabetical order by the authors last name. So, if you know your author, you will have no problem locating the book you want. They are ok on price, with most being half off the original price. This is such a throwback store to what I remember used to be all over in small towns, and I am so happy to have found them. read more

I was very excited to visit this bookstore. When I stepped through the doors, the smell of books tickled my nose in such a positive way. It's a smell that has long been forgotten as new books do not carry the "book smell." Overall Nan's has a wide selection of books. Many of them are used and much older books. You can see that the spines are pretty damaged, so just be aware that the books are not "gently used." If you are looking for new books and new releases within the last 5 years you will be disappointed. I came in hoping to find more recent books, so I was a bit underwhelmed. read more

On our first family vacation during the pandemic we made bookstores our theme. We found a store at each town we stopped at and everyone got to pick 2 books. Was not expecting such a nice and large used bookstore in this area of mostly touristy shops, but Yelp steered us right. We went on a weekday afternoon so saw only 2 other customers the entire time we were there. Young (masked) woman at front was kind and friendly, but also gave us our space and time to browse. Although not dirt cheap yard sale prices, books were in great condition and prices were fair. Fiction selection was smaller than I'd expected but lots of other genres well represented. So grateful a shop like this could stay open during the pandemic and we were happy to support them. We all enjoyed our books while relaxing at Pismo Beach enjoying our first taste of normalcy in such a long time. read more

Really appalled at the huge sign that's up outside this book store. I'm not easily offended, and I can usually find the humor in almost anything, but really? "They call it PMS because Mad Cow Disease was taken". Wow. LOVE!!!!! This store is wonderful and Nan is super sweet. Good wide variety of books, and she also does buy backs. She will always buy her books back that's why it's stamped on the inside. Ahh...the last of the small family bookstores. I found a hidden gem on the Central Coast of California! Love this place with all my favorite authors available. As a used bookstore the prices are fabulous and I can stock up on those books I haven't read before and really want to hold in my hand instead of reading it on my Kindle. Complete with a cat and places to sit, this bookstore may be small, but it has all the books you can possibly want to read and more. I hope it sticks around for a long while! When I can find a day to myself, Nan's is one of my favorite places to start. You cannot walk into Nan's with a planned purchase but that is also the beauty of the store. You never know what you are going to find amongst the many titles. They have a section for every interest and the selection is ever changing. Decently organized and sized for not being a corporate bookstore. You can typically find Nan or her daughter working behind the counter and they are helpful when looking for something inparticular. They also have a computerized inventory syetem which makes searching much easier. Books are sold at half of the cover price. You can also receive store credit for any books you bring in at 1/3 of the cover price. To save yourself from doing the math in your head, this equates to only paying 1/6 of the actual cover price when you purchase and return a book at Nan's. I absolutely love this place! read more

Fantastic used book store! I don't know how they get their used books, but they have such a wide variety of classics and bestsellers for very reasonable prices! The staff is always friendly and they have a lovely cat in the store! While some of the books may look tattered and used, they only stock books that have enough integrity to stay together for normal use. We got multiple books for my grandpa and I feel very confident that I can send him by himself to the store and he will be helped to find exactly what he wants or needs! read more

I have been shopping at Nan's for almost 2 decades. Originally the store was a much smaller location further down Grand Ave, but even then the selection and service was fabulous. It is one of the most nicely organized used bookstores I have been in.
