The Art Center on Union Ave is hands-down my favorite art store in Memphis. I'm there constantly for supplies for sign painting, pinstriping, spray painting, screen printing, and pretty much every creative project I take on. No matter what I'm working on, they always have exactly what I need at a good price. The staff is incredibly welcoming, helpful, and knowledgeable. Whether I'm hunting down specific brushes, looking for the right paint for a mural, or trying out new materials, they always point me in the right direction without any pressure. You can tell they actually care about artists and understand the tools we use. Their selection is huge -- from professional sign-painting and pinstriping supplies to spray paint, inks, canvases, and everything in between. It's one of those places where you walk in for one thing and end up finding five other things you didn't even know you needed. Memphis is lucky to have a place like this. The employee are sweet and knowledgeable. As a student, I can find my items immediately and if there was change, they inform your costumers right at the door. I do wish their website, showcase some of their deals and products so that way I can see what they offer. read more

Glad we found this store. After ordering my daughter a table top easel online that arrived broken. I did a search of art supply stores that were "chains". This place was quite a ways from us but worth the drive. The employees were nice. Trinity was the name of the employee on my receipt if they don't share register logins-she is the one who helped us pick out a easel & demonstrated how it worked. So many paint brushes & colors to choose from. Sure they had items we can get at local chain stores but they also had things that aren't at the chain stores. Because they are a local business & we're so helpful we will be making an effort to return. read more

I did a little research on Art Supply stores in the Memphis area, because we have an employee who is retiring and we wanted to give her a gift certificate to a local store in her area. I found this store and shot off an email to them, inquiring about gift certificates and the ability to ship them as I am in NJ and would not be able to visit the store. Same day, I get an email from Susan, the VP of the store. She was very friendly and knowledgeable, told me I could call up and ask the store manager Jimmy to get the certificate all squared away. A few days later, gave the store a call. They were in the middle of receiving a shipment and requested I call back. No problem, I remember working in the retail world. I call back, Jimmy picked up, and he handled my transaction perfectly. Five star service, so glad these lovely people were able to help me out. I've only been here once so far on my trip to Memphis but I fell in love with this place. My daughter is into illustration and we are in town because her grandpa is in the hospital. We saw this place and pulled over in the middle of a huge rain storm. Walking in right around opening, we were the only ones there. George helped us right away. We really only wanted to check it out and pick up some more Coptic markers but we found out he was a professional illustrator so we had a great time picking his brain for suggestions on paper, markers, books,pencils, gel pens, and erasers. We walked out with about $100 worth of stuff that ended up being wildly useful and had helped my daughter take her art to the next level in a matter of hours. She's literally been drawing for about 6-8 hours in the hospital with all the items George helped her pick out. He was fantastic and inspiring. We plan to go back before we head back to California and now I will come back to this gem of a store every time I am in town. Thank you George!! read more

This art store has been around for as long as I can remember (& I'm in my 40s.) I was an art student in Memphis in the 90s, bought everything I needed for school and practice here... I bought their "Kiss an Artist" sticker at LEAST 25 years ago and put it on my drafting table. That table has been around the world with me and is still in my studio, with the same worn-out sticker. This store is legendary to many of us Memphis artists. read more

I don't have an artistic bone in my body but I love this place. And given that my job requires me to do a lot of arts and crafts type things (or rather, attempt), I end up here quite frequently. At first, I was afraid this place would be incredibly overpriced but I've never noticed it. Everything I've bought has been quite reasonable and the people are very knowledgeable and FAST. I can't tell you how many times I've walked in in a panic only to be quickly reassured that either they a) have what I'm looking for or b) can cut this poster board into 20 pieces in 3 minutes. If you need anything art related, this is your place! And I can't wait to get something professionally framed here. I've browsed through their frames and they are lovely. read more

I heart this place. It never lets me down. This place has fantastic service, so when I came in here last year with a list of supplies that I didn't know how to pronounce, not to mention knew what they were or what they looked like, I was so happy when I was almost instantly approached by someone who was more than willing to find everything on my list for me. Everyone here has a great knowledge of not only what stuff is and what it's used for, but also what's in, what's out, and what's been mistakenly called something else. I also love this place because as a student, I get a discount here. Doesn't get much better than that. The place in midtown to get art supplies and most importantly:advice. It seems most everyone that works here is an artist or art student. Must be the close proximity to the Memphis College of Art. Everything from canvas, paint, easels & brushes and almost everything else (pads,pens, colored pencils) that you can think of that you need or want to satisfy that creative urge or craving, you'll find it here. I agree with everyone else- Art Center Supply is the best place to go when you're in need of art supplies. I'm no artist myself, but I have had the need to buy art supplies for special projects before, and since I am such a novice, I generally ask alot of questions. The staff here gets that, and they are more than happy to lend advice and help me find whatever I need. I stopped in not long ago and bought my daughter a Melissa and Doug tabletop easel with chalkboard and dry erase board included. She is definitely a budding young artist, and I look forward to taking her back to Art Center Supply to help her grow her artistic talent. read more

Absolute rudest owner. Walked in with my brother after being rudely cut off by the owner at the door and he turned around once we made it in to rudely say "can I help you" as if we were an inconvenience to him. My brother says "hi I'm looking for like watercolor paint to start painting with". He responds "we're open from 1 to 5 tomorrow". Then a cashier says "if you can do it in like 30 seconds then"..( trying to help us out) and the owner responds "no he needs to shut the system down"! And we left without given salutations.. When I walk into this place I totally wanna paint happy little trees with Bob Ross. Hell, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to paint happy little trees with Bob Ross all the time, man's a legend folks. I digress, I don't have a learned concept of art, but it doesn't stop me from creating my own masterpieces for my pad every now and again. This happens to be the place in Memphis that I go to when I feel the need to get creative. There's something about the rows upon rows of colored paints, colored pencils and blank canvases that makes me giddy. Generally, I like to give the place a couple 2-3 go-arounds before I decide upon my purchase. Everything here is so fresh, clean and begging to be used. As a bonus, the staff here is super helpful and friendly. They now know I am not the true definition of an "artist," but rather a gal who likes to control what goes on her walls. The prices are very reasonable, and I really haven't found a large selection of canvas sizes anywhere else. Love this place! read more

I had three people greet me and asked if I needed help, one woman even complimented my outfit to make small talk. I was looking for copics, which they didn't have, however, they said they could make a special order for me if I were to come back if I prepaid. That I found very helpful, as I prefer to buy from small business art stores rather than online. Instead, I picked up a nice gouache palette set for just $20. Another tip, they take Amex! One of my framed posters took some bad water damage and I needed to have the matting and backing replaced. I brought in the poorly salvaged parts and they managed to restore it and make it look better than it was before. The turn-around time was most impressive: the next day! Very knowledgeable staff and eager to work out any solutions. read more

This store was a great find. I had a niece who was dying to spend her straight A money on some art supplies. They offered her a student discount which was also nice. My medium review comes from the fact they allow their employees to wear anti-police rhetoric. As a 20 year veteran in the law enforcement world, I was really disappointed, and I think businesses need to understand when they allow their employees to wear this type of stuff it reflects on their business as a whole. read more

I went in needed a lot of supplies for class at U of M and luckily I came in just as one of my classmates was checking out. They made an extra copy of her receipt, and when I thought I would be here forever looking for all of these supplies, this guy ran around picking out everything within 5 or 6 minutes! What a guy! Then I was able to shop for a few extras on my time while all of the rest was waiting at the counter for me. Awesome! Student discount was included which was also great!! Love it! read more
