I'm basing the four…read morestar review on both of those visits, but had I reviewed based on just the evening visit it would probably have been only three stars. I'm not a huge fan of northern French cuisine as it tends to have too much dairy in it for my taste; however Cote are very amenable to offering alternatives where possible so I didn't have much trouble finding something acceptable. Their lunch and early evening menu is very good value for money; however we were too late to partake of that on the Friday evening so it was a la carte and the specials menu all the way! It was starting to get busy but the staff seemed to be coping well - at least until they tried to serve us with the wrong set of starters... things went slightly downhill after that. Next, my side dish of butternut squash failed to arrive with my main course of hake. Our server was very apologetic of course, and once remedied it arrived fairly promptly - or at least before the fish went cold. The next hiccup was with the order of our second bottle of wine. The first had been a complimentary one that you get on your return visit if you register with them on their website, so naturally we took full advantage of that! However, when the wine waiter brought the second bottle (recommended by the house), he erroneously said it was a Languedoc wine, when in actual fact it was from the Loire. That's a pretty basic mistake for a wine waiter to make, and blaming it on his line manager is a pretty feeble excuse that smacks of poor training. Then another flask of water arrived, although we hadn't even started the first one as they had failed to provide water glasses! Oh well, we'll just carry on with the wine, shall we? We had enough room for dessert, and at this point our ever-apologetic server surprised us by offering a half-bottle of dessert wine for the table at her own expense. Jolly nice it was too. Clearly they were having a bad night when we visited; however the actual food was top notch, the staff could not have been more attentive and apologetic, and they did their utmost to sort things out. I don't blame them for the cock-ups and it certainly will not stop me from enjoying the delicious food here in future.

Right on the main road in Perth's city centre is this…read morescrummy little restaurant that hits all the high notes: good lighting, good service, good food, and--every Scottish person's favourite--good *value.* When you walk in the decor is sort of sumptuously hip, with unapologetically bright red accents and a bold print of the Paris Metro on the wall. You are greeted immediately by a cheerful and charming server--the kind who can be friendly without seeming intrusive and enthusiastic without seeming phony. The menu is adventurous and authentic, with specials that include the likes of frog's legs. It is a joy to find a restaurant that doesn't kowtow to local tastes but instead does what it says on the culinary tin. The chef really knows his stuff and delivers bold, rich, FRENCH flavours that melt in your mouth. But be forewarned--the portions are also authentic. A bit smaller than what you might normally find in a Scottish restaurant. But as French food is swimming in fat, that's probably a good thing. The pre-theatre menu is a steal, but if you miss that there is also a standing tasting menu where you can get any three courses for 19.99. The portions are a bit smaller than the a la carte, but the price is right. There are also small carafes of wine on offer, for those nights when you want a bit more than a glass but not a whole bottle. (What nights are those?) Should you find yourself in Perth, make a reservation at this deservedly popular little gem.

The food was sublime (not what you would expect in Uddingston!). I had a Butternut Squash Veloute with a poached egg and some a parmesan twill. Watching all the food programmes going, I had saw this made a few times and always wanted to try it. It was soooo good. Basically it is just a fancy soup but the beautiful poached egg and the veloute were so delicious and creamy. I then had slow braised beef with mash potatoes, glazed vegetables and gravy. There was a huge portion of delicious soft beef. The mash was creamy and yummy. All in all, it was one of the best dishes I have had in a long time. We then shared a Banana sticky toffee pudding as we were too full to have one each. The sponge was lovely and soft and the bananas were caramelised on top. Truth be told, I could have probably ate this myself looking back. Staff were lovely and attentive. I never tried any wine but they had an extensive list. Go here if you want amazing food at a reasonable price.

The boards outside show a few interesting specials to tempt you inside - rose lamb hotpot with garlic bread, vegetable stew as well as some breakfast-type options of scrambled eggs. Inside it's nicely decorated - not too over the top with the Frenchness but there's a lovely chandelier, loads of seating, and a generally pretty cosy vibe. There's a deli section which has a chilled stacked with cheeses and meat, as well as pre-made croissants and baguettes. There's also a shelf of jarred French delights like marinated garlic, truffled mushrooms, terrine, goose fat etc, plus fresh breads, quiches and Christmas hampers. As you can probably tell, they've managed to pack a lot into this deli! I was keen to try the Croque Monsieur so asked to get one takeaway. They offered to heat it up for me but seeing as I wasn't going straight home I got it cold. They wrapped it in foil for me and gave me heating instructions which was handy. While I was waiting for my sandwich I gave into the temptation on the counter and grabbed a couple of pastries for £1.50 each (pastel de nata). Now - confession time - I did actually buy two of these and one was meant to be for my husband, but I ate them both. Woops. They were just divine, the crispy caramelised top was too much for me to resist. And I don't even have a sweet tooth. I also got a wedge of Gruyere (who can resist a cheese counter?) which wasn't bad value at £19/kg, and off I went on my way. Then when I discovered they sell one of my favourite French dishes ever, the humble Croque Monsieur, I knew I had to get myself down there. Popped in for a flying visit today and I definitely wasn't disappointed - it was bigger than I was expecting and was definitely a nice, cosy place to come into out of the cold! It was pretty busy considering it was about 3pm on a Sunday and had such a lovely atmosphere, really chilled out and just seemed like a good place to relax. I went up to the counter to place my order (to take away) and was told it'd be 4 minutes, nice and specific! I had a wee nosey while I was waiting and all the produce looks so very tasty. They had French cheeses and saucissons, as well as quiches, pastries, bread...among other things - mmm! The staff were very attentive and friendly, can't fault the service at all. The Croque Monsieur itself was totally delicious! I was determined to make it home before I ate it but I ended up scoffing half of it when I got in my car cause it smelled so good!! They also had the Moulin Rouge soundtrack playing when I was in which I loved, that's a plus for me! Definitely going to go back (hopefully sooner rather than later!) so I'll write an update on what the sit-in service is like too - can't imagine it'll be bad though!

My favourite however still has to be French, from classic Escoffier to the more rustic I love the way in which they seem to be able to celebrate produce. After a walk to the Castle Terrace Famers Market Steph and I decided that lunch out would be a nice reward for our newfound healthy lifestyle and gym going. In search of reasonably priced and yet reasonably healthy food we came across L'escagot Blanc. With 2 mains for £10.90 this was ideal for us. Once you have a chance to sit down and take in your surroundings you are taken by the charming, rustic French decor. All of the staff are French and greet you in their mother tongue, something which I love. Steph pointed out the staff don't wear uniforms, something which we both agreed added a homely feel we loved. To the food, after some deliberation I opted for the warm fish terrine and Steph the homemade rillette with gherkins. My terrine was fantastic, the flavour was very well measured and the texture soft. I can't say I have had many fish terrines in my life but this was certainly the best. It came with a crayfish sauce that set it off brilliantly. Stephs rillette was also lovely, but I was happy with my choice :). The rillette was served with a jar of gherkins so you could have as many as you would like or not as it were. For our mains I chose the Lyon Saucisson with puy lentils and Steph had the Fish of the Day which was pike. My dish came to the table in a pot and was served by the waitress, great restaurant theatre. What made this even better was that there were seconds to be had in the pot. As the manager said to us on the way out their food is what great French food is all about, simplicity and great flavour. The sausage and lentils went brilliantly together and the qaulity of the sausage was great. Just one of those dishes that make you go YUMMMM. Stephs pike was equally impressive, so gently cooked the flavour was tremendous. Soft soft fish with a tomato sauce, it worked well. Again simple and delicious. There can't have been many more than five ingredients in either dish but both were so tasty.

Brian has won many awards and while he is born and bred Scottish he received most of his training in France and his menus reflect this blend of Scottish and French cuisine. This guy was spotted by the Roux brothers and was appointed head chef of their Michelin star restaurant Le Gavroche in London. So that gives you an idea of how good you can expect Brian's very own Chardon d'Or restaurant to be! The restaurant is in an old tenement building with big windows and high ceilings but is decorated in a modern minimalist fashion. This place oozes class with the "proper" table clothes, china plates and solid silver cutlery. The staff always look immaculate and are very friendly. Chardon d'Or is fine dining at is best but is never pretentious and you are always made to feel welcome. The menu is constantly changing as Brian likes to use seasonal ingredients but generally you can expect a modern take on some French and Scottish classics. From starter to dessert everything is intensely flavored and impeccably presented. You will be completely stuffed but you must keep going through all three courses. The sticky toffee pudding is orgasmic! The last time I ate here I remember saying to my friend, "These carrots are amazing!" It is very rare than anyone would describe carrots as amazing! Perhaps, "The meat was cooked to perfection", or "The sauce is wonderful", but complimenting the vegetables? But that's how good this guy is! Every component of every course will be individually divine and the combination of components will add up to three fantastic courses. If you book your table for later on in the evening you will get to meet Brian. After last service he always comes round the tables to speak personally with every diner. I think this is a fabulous touch and it is fantastic to know that Brian is actually in the kitchen overseeing all the food that is served in his restaurant. It is definitely worth checking out the website as there is always something going on at this restaurant. I have been to one of the cooking demonstrations and it was a fantastic way to spend a few hours. There are around 30 people there and you are all served a glass of champagne on arrival and then Brian personally demonstrates how to cook an amazing two course meal. You can ask him as many questions as you like and he will happily answer them. You are also given detailed written instructions home with you on how to cook the two courses yourself at home. You also get to enjoy tea or coffee and the two courses which have just been demonstrated to you, all for around £40 per person.

The vibe tho is grown up, serene and subdued in the best ways, the cream walls were dotted with beautiful abstract art in shades of grey, there was a large fireplace feature, soothing just audible music, fresh red roses on the table (it was valentines!) linen table cloths. It was beautiful and even though it was jumping it felt like a calm and soothing environment. The staff were exactly what you would expect from a restaurant like the Sister - delightful. They were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the service was fast...probably faster than it normally would be due to the date, having said that I never once felt rushed or harassed - the staff were just sharp and on the ball with clearing plates. The menu at the sisters is like a love letter to Scotland, it was loaded with haggis, black pudding, fish, venison, beef cheeks, clootie dumpling and puff candy. It was like head chef Jackie O'Donnell had stepped into my childhood and brought all those foods into the 21st century. I could very easily have chosen any dish on offer from each course, it's an utterly lush menu. In the end I decided to try the haggis, neeps and tatties to start, I never took pictures of the menu so I forget the exact description of the dish. My first thought upon seeing my dish was wow! There was a puddle of glossy gravy, in the middle was a large haggis cake topped with neeps and a fritter....yes a freakin FRITTER!! I was beside myself as I am sure by now you know how I feel about fritters. The food was utterly gorgeous and without fault, the haggis was tasty and slightly spicy, the neeps were light and creamy, and the fritter was crisp and perfect. Gorgeous! For my main I finally decided on the Chicken breast with Stornoway black pudding, creamed leeks & a red wine jus with a side of Rooster tatties & market vegetables to share. Again visually it was so beautiful to look at. Taste wise it was amazing, the chicken was moist and tender, the creamed leeks still had bite and were seasoned to perfection, the big wedge of black pudding was soft and crumbly, the mash was silky and the red wine jus was lush and decedent. The side was also a triumph - the roasted potatoes were crispy golden nuggets of joy and the veg was incredibly tasty, I even liked the broccoli (I hate broccoli) but I loved however they cooked it. After all that food dessert was touch and go for a while, but there was no way I could leave without trying the Puff candy meringue with honeycomb, ice cream & hot butterscotch sauce. Now lets not kid ourselves this dish it basically a plate of sugar in various forms.....but boy what a plate of sugar it was. The puff candy meringue was light and delicate, the honeycomb was crunchy and sweet and the butterscotch sauce was thick and creamy. This dessert is as good as desserts get. It was a stunning gift from the sugar gods! All in all a pretty exceptional meal and up there with the best I have eaten in Glasgow without question. This is a must try restaurant for me and I will definitely visit again very soon.
