My daughter took a week of ceramics classes at the Novato site this summer and loved it so much that we decided to try out the school year semester classes at the San Rafael studio (much closer to us!). She loves it so much, she's signed up for another semester. Isabelle, her San Rafael teacher, is a great teacher and is very good with kids. After summer ceramics, I had checked out the Terra Linda Ceramics classes offered through the town. They're slightly cheaper, but do not look to be near as good as Do Art!/ Studio 4 Art courses. First, at Terra Linda, wheel-time seems limited. At Do Art!, students are able to use the wheel (I think there are 8!) any time and for as long as they want. I've also been told children's classes at Terra Linda are fairly regimented, whereas Do Art! really lets kids stretch their creativity and choose their own artistic direction. An additional advantage of taking art courses at Do Art! and Studio 4 Art is that they offer make-up classes. This is really important and makes these courses as economical as courses offered through the town. My daughter took the monthly make-up class this week and was the only student! She loved having the studio to herself and having Isabelle as an one-on-one teacher.

I saw that they'd opened, but the hours (Saturday and Sunday only) kept me from stopping in for a while. Finally, while riding my bike on errands I dropped into The Ranch when it was open and, well, this place is a find. Exactly what is "this place"? Being the first to review I am left to choose up to three categories in which to list The Ranch. This is where creative thinking comes in. First and foremost, it seems to be a place for art. There's artists works filling at least two buildings on site in addition to a sculpture garden filled with beautiful pieces. Secondly, I chose "Interior Design" as, aside from the art, the largest single tenant here seems to be The Still Collective. Housed in a large, airy space, The Still Collective does interior design and staging but what you might pop in here for is to purchase their unique furnishings and, yes, more art. A handful of small studios connect the grounds between the art space and the interiors space: art studios, ceramics, women's fashion, surf photography, and Hawaiian-inspired retail. All in all, The Ranch is a really cool place to pop in for a look-see, possibly as you make your way out to West Marin. The grounds are so serene and lovely that I hope they add live music and maybe even a coffee bar at some future point but that, of course, isn't up to me. Until then, I will no doubt make time to stop in occasionally, to see beautiful art in a beautiful space and enjoy the historic property on which it all sits. I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it too. AMFA exhibits, represents and has inventory of the finest quality post war and contemporary art by the most important and historic artists. I have not (yet) visited the physical space in San Francisco; my direct experiences are limited to the most prestigious exhibition venues. Specifically, the last couple of years at Art Basel Miami Beach and the ADAA Art Show at the Park Ave. Armory in NYC. In addition to the Gallery presenting remarkable examples by the most recognizable mid 20th through 21st century artists, it is also a launch pad for important, rising mid-career artists. Anthony Meier and his staff are approachable, genuinely courteous and knowledgeable. Given the opportunity, and if one listens intently, the Gallerists unhesitatingly discuss and educate with passion. AMFA is all about the presence of the art and artists. Anthony Meier himself is of vast knowledge and experience. And, through a recent acquisition, I've become more personally acquainted with the staff, all of whom are exceptional professionals. My personal dealings were outstanding on every level, particularly communications. I look forward to future acquisitions through AMFA and a visit to the Gallery's west coast exhibition space. My highest of recommendations.

And that big metal gate is a little intimidating. But this hidden gem is more than worth it. The Gothic Revival architecture is a rare treat in San Francisco. The exhibitions are diverse and interesting. The curator does a nice job of integrating the art with the interiors. And the woman working in the gallery (Kristin) is friendly and knowledgeable, offering useful information when asked, but giving me my space to wander too.

Even though I was a little hesitant of more online time, the classes proved to be a welcome break and showed my girls that online classes can be a positive and fun experience. My beloved firstborn likes to paint, color, draw, do something creative. So I thought, why not have a party where they create something fun indoors? I searched online for art and kids party, and found the Art Maker Studio in San Rafael. And am I glad that I did! There's good info on Yelp and on their website, but what sold me is how responsive Renee was with my millions of questions via email. She answered quickly and was very organized about everything! There were different options for the kids art project for a party, and my daughter decisively opted for the jellybean mosaic art project. I tried to persuade her to choose the ceramic art or painting, but the idea of jelly bean mosaic captured her imagination and she was excited! There were 16 kids between the ages of 3-6 that took part in the art project, a few younger siblings hanging around, parents helping out with the party and art project, and the kids had such a blast! We brought our cake and snacks, some decorations, but Renee was ready with the tables, chairs, music selection, and lots of jelly beans We did the cake first since we brought ice cream cake, snacks, then the gallery and studio tours were fantastic! The older kids could totally envision being artists and putting their art up. It was fascinating and inspiring The art project itself was a lot of fun. A few kids even wanted to complete multiple jelly bean mosaic pieces, and what was so great is that they got to take their masterpieces home So if you're looking for something unique and creative for your kids and their friends to do during a birthday party, I can't recommend this place enough! I might even have my own birthday party for adults here one day.

The kids get to tour the gallery and draw inspiration from local artist. The class were so fun! Lots of different mediums and techniques are used to create everything from puzzles to pots. The instructor, Renee, is an artist and a mother. She is engaging and encouraging and made each class interesting!
