A couple of years ago, I went to the AGH E.R. for severe kidney stone pain. The staff at the AGH ER gave me a couple of pain pills and an IV for the pain which eliminated my pain within a minute or two. The ER doctor on duty that day, (a doctor not recognized), said that I needed EMERGENCY surgery, so the 'smart' doctor sent me to the local airport within minutes so I could take an emergency flight to El Paso's 'Del Sol' hospital for immediate kidney stone surgery. I was able to walk, and when I was stepping off the medical aircraft, a King Air, I twisted my knee very badly on the aircraft stairs. That knee pain remains to this day, December 2025. Once at the third world hospital of Del Sol, I had to wait for three hours before anyone even noticed me. I was without pain and very upset that not even a nurse checked on me. I walked out of that hospital and walked to the William Beaumont VA hospital a few miles away. There, the doctors could not understand why AGH would think I needed emergency surgery. WB VA Hospital sent me home with good pain meds and that was it. After doing a search, I found a good urologist in Roswell, NM who treated my kidney stones and was excellent with a diagnosis and management. AGH was very wrong in wasting my time and money sending me to El Paso to the worst, and dirtiest hospital in El Paso, Del Sol Hospital. The ER at AGH need to make note of this. JMO read more

I've been here multiple times and have had awful experiences every time. Unfortunately there's no other options. I try to just drive to Lubbock Tx when I'm having an emergency that might be able to handle the long drive. I have also started getting all the rest of my care in Lubbock due to the poor service I've received from other local establishments. It's unfortunate but the care is night and day so it's worth the 6hr round trip in my opinion. read more

So we are not from here. My partner is from Texas and I am from Arizona. He was here working on the oil rigs after being off for 7 days with what we thought was the flu. He had came here on a Wednesday because he said he was still not feeling right. I get a call late Wednesday early Thursday that his appendix ruptured. Due to there being no flights I drove 9 1/2 hours to get here and the care that he received from all the staff has been top notch. They told me I am able to stay with him so I wasn't spending money on a room. It's not much but it's the little things that make such a hard situation easier to deal with. My experience at the ED under the care of Dr Weitz was unexceptional. I had an acute leg injury related to a fall into the split position. I told him that I felt a tear. He had me bare weight on the leg and checked my leg for bruising. He did not further evaluate my ROM. X-rays were taken, which do not diagnose a muscle tear or rupture . I was given one dose of pain medication, a lidocaine patch and an ace wrap. He denied my request for a knee stabilizer or even a muscle relaxant. I was advised stretching.! He should have ordered an ultrasound to check for tears and a knee/leg immobilizer. As an RN I knew Dr Weitz was minimizing my injury. Back to California...a physician assessed my ROM, saw the hematoma and ordered an MRI. Complete avulsion of the hamstring at the ischium. Surgery next. Imagine the people who do not advocate for themselves. Dr Weitz was indifferent and spent minimal time evaluating my symptoms. Artesians deserve better care and more compassionate physicians. read more

My mother in law had some horrible ankle pain so my husband took her to the er. The ER doctor Bacca came into the exam room and had a horrible additude right from the start. His bedside manor was rude and harsh for no reason. He grabbed my mother in laws leg and began squeezing it and twisting it so hard she yelped in pain. My husband who was there to advocate for his mother who is disabled, asked if he could be more gentle. He didn't need to cause more pain then necessary. This doctor, rather then simply apologize and lighten up, decided to way over react and called sacurity to have my husband removed for simply advocating for a disabled person. ( Now I could understand if he was being rude or mean about it) but he didn't any anything other then calming ask the doctor to be more gentle. He let his ego interfere with his ability to deal with patients. I would suggest going to a different hospital rather then deal with this place. Seems there doctors are horrible with patient care. And bedside manor. Any doctor who flys off the handle at a simple request to be more careful isn't someone who should be treating people at all. And so far my disabled mother in law has been to this hospital 4 times in 2 months treating her health issues and every encounter with this hospital has has been less then decent due to the doctors they have on hand. There only saving grace is the nurses seem to be better kinder doctors then any of the doctors. read more

Worst ever...I drove almost an hour because they told me the area I was in the wait could be 2hrs..I get here and the check in girl says we can take you in at 330pm. Mind you I got there at 830am. Then she goes we have patients we need to attend to..THERE WAS NOT 1 single person waiting!!!! She did not want to help nor did she seemed sympathetic..so I drove back to the urgent care and funny thing is they took me right in...that hospital...just sad... read more

I went there recently to have blood drawn ordered by my doctor. The lab had to call in different technicians to see if one of them could do it. In the end, there were 5 different people jabbing me 8 times--8 times --to draw my blood. Not until the last one who was called in, two hours later, and many bruises on the backs of my hands, the sides of my hands, my inner elbows and wrists, were they able to draw my blood. It was a phlebotomist who has been doing blood draws, they said, for over 20 years. No one should have to go through something like that. Some of them blamed me saying my veins were "delicate", my skin is too thin, my veins roll, I don't drink enough water, my skin was too cold, and two of them said "sorry", not that they were sorry, when it felt like they were sticking the needle into my bone. I am angry. They made light of the situation. Someone should be told. I asked if someone would be made aware of this and they said "Why? It happens all the time." Well, it shouldn't. read more

I received very poor care from this facility on July 26th, 2015. I came in for a very sharp pain in my right side and a pain level of 8-9 as I was coming home from a camping trip in New Mexico. I waited two and a half hours to even be seen by Dr. Elin Ritchie, my attending physician. The hospital performed a blood test, Urine test, basic abdominal check and a pelvic exam. My results of the blood and urine test came back without incident. Dr. Ritchie performed an abdominal exam that made me cry and refused to lighten her pressure when I told her she was hurting me. The pelvic exam was very rough as well and Dr Ritchie said that if the pelvic exam " didn't make you yelp, you don't have a[n ovarian] cyst or appendicitis." Dr.Ritchie said the pain must be muscular and that I was good to go home without pain medication. When I refused and asked for further testing I was refused but she offered Toridol for the next 4 hours of pain. I refused and asked to stay to speak with the surgeon in the morning or get an X- Ray, but again was refused. Dr. Ritchie said I had "No Medical Reason" to receive any further treatment and she was going to get my discharge paperwork. I demanded other options as I felt I could not get home to Dallas 9 hours away with my pain level at a 8-9. Something was certainly wrong. Dr. Ritchie said "I will order a CT scan, but you will have to wait 3-4 hours and will be paying for it". No longer feeling safe in her care, I told them I would accept the Toridol and leave to get medial aid elsewhere. Dr. Ritche came in and said that "because we have started prepping the CT scan, you would now be leaving against medical advice." I signed the paper saying thus as I was not aware that I could refuse nor that that was the paper I was signing, and I left. I returned home to Dallas, Texas where I returned to the ER and found out I had appendicitis. I had an emergency surgery the same day to have it removed and will be in recovery for 4-6 weeks. I have never been to a medical facility where I felt so uncomfortable, so unsafe and so slighted. The staff was callous and rude and very rough and uncaring towards their patients. The facility was unsanitary and poorly kept as explained below. I also had issues of unsanitary nature among the staff, one example being that my nurse, Allison, did not wear gloves when taking blood and inserting my IV. There was also blood all over the counter!! This hospital has been reported to the AMA, the Medical review board, the New Mexico State Health Department, the Medical Licencing Department, and 10 other organizations that aid in the review of medical organizations. A hospital is supposed to help people and give them a feeling if safety and a hope for wellness. I received none of those things and was sent away without a backwards glance. This should never be okay and I hope this facility is brought into the light by those who have been notified. For your own safety, if you get sick in Artesia, just keep driving! read more

I recently moved to this area from another state. Being that this is somewhat of a rual area access to good healthcare is limited. I've already had an experience with the hospital in Carlsbad..and I prefer to take the 30 min drive to artesia general anytime I need medical care. As long as I have a choice I'll attend artesia general. I've had several family members receive procedures at this facility and I'm impressed. My sister had a knee replacement and their orthopedic team was great. The hospital rooms were so nice and clean. I'm glad we have the option for a better hospital near by. read more

I have been seen in the ER several times and have also seen a few of the hospital doctors for specialities. Every time I have had an encounter with the facility it has been great. Wow! I am so sorry that other people had bad experiences at this hospital. My experience was much better. I believe the people who felt poorly treated don't understand the obstacle we in this part of the state have to deal with. 2 of the bad reviews came from people living in larger cities and can, and do expect a high standard of care. I live in Carlsbad and drive to Artesia Hospital when needed because it is better than my local hospital (pretty sad). Drug abuse is rampant here and yes all ER's are on guard. I moved here from the West Coast and was stunned at what I found. That being said, I took my husband to the Artesia ER February 2018. We hit it just right, got in, seen, tested, treated within an hour. Dr. Abalos even called my husband 2 days later to follow up on his condition. Maybe the hospital is making an effort to improve their service. Bottom line - don't get sick here! read more

If this hospitals hiring process is anywhere near there patient care, i would recommend staying away from this facility. I had an interview with the assistant director Ray, April 2, they offered me the job, and were supposed to send an offer. Well a month later all i heard from the staffing agency, not even the hospital, is that HR department was still working on it. Well i facilitated things and sent them a email attempting to get answers, and they sent an email back saying there going another direction. Confused, talked to the staffing agency who talked to HR and said they were still considering me. Then another 2 and a half weeks later, find out they are not choosing me for the position, without any prior contact or reasoning. I was supposed to Skype as well with Artesia HR and Ray, they postponed that a few times until that got cancelled, and then after that said they were going to send me the offer, assuring me i was getting the job. I moved around my schedule so much and even turned down a few offers because of there misleading staff, and now i am back in another tough position. Of All the facility's i have had interviews with or staff i have talked to, this one was the most unprofessional. The HR department Truly does not seem they know how to do there job or even care about the individuals they are trying to hire. read more
