They made me a little coffee swan!
    Jody B.

On a walk back from groceries on Thursday, I looked up to find White Petal Flowers had (seemingly overnight) morphed into Artisan Roast/flower shop duo. Thinking back, it makes me a bit nervous I didn't see this coming, because I walk past this place daily... but my strange attention span aside, I was pretty darn happy at my "surprise coffeeshop" find. Why? Because it's a good 50 steps closer to me than Costa. It's also exceptionally better coffee than Costa, but I like to lead with the lazy and those 50 steps mean a great deal folks. The people working there are lovely, the big bay windows out front will be a charming place to spend the afternoon once spring hits and my flat white was excellent. More research needs to be completed (it's a tough life), but if this place offers wifi, you're looking at my new out-of-office office.

Ok, I'll be honest from the start... this review probably isn't the fairest, as I am a "hold my hands up in the air", self-proclaimed Artisan Roast groupie! The truth is, that the Edinburgh coffee scene rivals London for the best in the UK, without having to travel on tubes to get to them, which in my opinion immediately makes it better. Artisan Roast has to be up there with the best of the best, and this coffee house in the cute, suburb of Stockbridge is no exception. The edgy hip hop beats pulsing through the speakers reflects the dark grey walls and industrial lighting, but with the super sweet florist inside, shows it also has a softer side. The staff are as brilliant as the other artisan roasts, and my coffees are always fantastic. I usually opt for a flat white, and their house blend espresso goes perfectly with the milk. If that's not your thing, they also have a selection of pour overs available. With the full frontal window, it's the perfect way to spend a grey Edinburgh day, and watch the people of Stockbridge go by. And now I can say that I have visited all 3 of the A.R branches I know about (if there's more, let me know... I'll be there before you can say "flat white").

Fab coffee ! I've been hearing about Artisans roast for the last year but have never seem to make my way there till yesterday! I'm so glad I finally made it here! My soya latte was delicious! Rich and dark roast so yummy. Sometimes the smaller size coffees really annoy me because it's just "so-so" coffee.. But this espresso was so delicious I was happy with my smaller size , each sip was a wee taste of heaven ! I also had a lovely slice of fresh blueberry coconut cake that was moist and super tasty ! I definitely make my way back for another lovely latte . The bummer was there was no free wifi and my phone didn't get reception sitting in the back ! Which means my partner and I just had to talk! Haha so I guess it's a benefit too;) The flower shop that's in the same shop make it a hip and beautiful atmosphere !

Perfect coffees & pastries. They also sell flowers. It's a good place to take a break.

Lovely little place for a quick coffee and a pastry on a Sunday morning or any time of the day…read morereally. The interior is quite simple with pictures on the walls that give the place the right touch of colour. I love the view towards the tea pots and coffee machines behind the counter. So colourful! The location is ideal near the Meadows. The staff is very friendly. Toilets are clean. I had ordered a cafe latte and a pastry. Both tasted delicious. Sometimes the floor started to shake, but I assume this is from the coffee machine. Not much space so and if you prefer a private conversation I would suggest to move to the corner in the back, otherwise be ok with people listening into your conversations :-) Enjoy!

The disappointment arrives after the coffee turns out to be...eh...well... that sort of response. If I don't close my eyes and give out a long contented sigh when the coffee first passes my waiting lips, I won't subject my mouth to further torment. Luckily for those of us in the Toll Cross hood, Machina is the kind of coffee you close your eyes to enjoy. It's pretty obvious when you step in there: the boards showing you the different methods of brewing, the shiny pretty espresso machines for sale, the long time it takes them to make your cappuccino. There aren't many seats, in fact it's probably bigger than your living room. Not mine, mine is tiny, which is why I sit in Machina as long as I can milk my hot beverage. But it's cool people watching for those few who do get to sit because lots of meadows-meanderers come through for to-go options, and the long uncomfortable minutes while they wait make them antsy and squirmy (it somehow feels wrong to pull out your phone here, so these people mostly just stand there, reading about espresso machines, trying not to look at anyone else) and it's pretty funny. And I've seen DOGS inside, which gives them BONUS stars.

Being the email fiend that I am, I find this place particularly resourceful if I'm wanting a wee sit down and a Hotmail session for half an hour. It's pretty inexpensive and a wee cheeky cup of tea doesn't break the bank. I am yet to try their smoothies but might give em a go now that Lynsey has talked 'em up. Sometimes caffeine is not in fact the answer, and their choice is useful if you need to rehydrate yourself with something colder. As Lynsey has also outlined this place is small, but if you stop by and avoid the peak times it's usually easy enough to get a PC. This place has been great for me on the countless recent visits to Edinburgh. As much as I love sitting in here and checking what my travelling friends are up to whilst sipping on a brew, it's just as handy for backpackers who are flying by to touch internet base before jetting off to another city. It's a shame that internet cafes have become endangered since they are still necessary, but it's a comfort Coffee Home Internet is still representing!
