    Nicola Russell Studio

    Nicola Russell Studio

    City Centre

This gallery is hidden away, discreetly secretive in the Queen Street Studio buildings. The simple…read moreyet catchy red writing on the signage for Nicola Russell's gallery caught my eye and immediately I was curious... I had to buzz for admittance before following the signs up two flights of stairs where I was allowed access to the gallery. I only had time for a quick peek round before a man approached and seemed to be saying 'Are you sure you're in the right place?' It appeared not many people visited...I explained I was a scout reviewing businesses in the area and was had been intrigued by the sign. He enquired if I knew Nicola's work (which I didn't!) so he gave me a brief biography and told me some information about the artist. I realised I'd seen her work on the recent BBC series 'Artspace' and had been fascinated by the horses she was drawing. It transpired that equestrian scenes are her speciality alongside portraiture, flowers and birds. She is also celebrated as a large scale commission artist. Nicola's work is collected worldwide. She has her art in the belonging to a number of prestigious people including the likes of the Queen, ex President Clinton, Mary McAlesse and Mo Mowlam. If you're in to horses in particular, you will be enthused by her studio. She captures the expression, life and strength of the powerful creatures down to a tee. The themes of her work celebrate the free spirited culture of Ireland whilst linking in the popularity of equine animals. She has previously painted the three time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner 'Arkle' as well as Aintree Grand National winner 'Papillion'. All in all I had a very pleasant experience; Kenneth (the director) treated me warmly and respectfully so I'll be back again so keep up to date with her work. Nicola is currently undergoing a large scale painting of the 'nation's favourite horse' a steed named Istabraq, on a massive canvas measuring 13ft by 11ft. She works on this under lock and key in her studio. This should be unveiled later 2010 and will be interesting to see the (what I'm sure will be brilliant) work she creates.
