Imagine being surrounded by the beauty of Glacier Park when you go to work every day. And then imagine having the pure pleasure of dealing with local Montana artists and craftsmen and women to find the merchandise to stock your shop. Imagine being surrounded by beautiful works of art all day long and serving as the agent to unite these artful items with happy and excited new owners who appreciate the fact that visiting a famous park in Montana should be commemorated with something created IN MONTANA instead of in a Chinese sweatshop. And there you have the premise and business model behind Montana House. I fully expect that I spent a total of two or three hours in a couple of visits to browse all the treasures. I so wish I had possessed a trunk load of cash to spend buying beautiful, meaningful gifts for everyone back home. Alas, I made several carefully considered purchases from only a small handful of artists but am still thrilled to have gotten to see representative works from several dozen more Montana artists. Montana House is sure to have that special treasure you will enjoy and cherish for years to come. And you will be a patron to a local Montana artist and put money into the economy of our own country at the same time. That is a win-win situation.

After having lunch at a fine Mexican restaurant in Columbia Falls, my wife, sister-in-law and I…read morestopped in at Iron Horse Art Gallery. After entering the store, we were greeted by a gentleman behind the sales counter. He asked us where we were visiting from, and my sister-in-law said "California." He then asked where in California, and she replied "San Diego." The man told us that he once lived in San Diego, in Ocean Beach, and he told us that he had lived in Montana since 1990. He said that he was "100% happier" in Montana, because the people were friendlier and "the people here are white." My sister-in-law said "We've noticed," in a mildly sarcastic way. The gentleman then went on to say that "While I'm not a racist, there are no gooks or weirdos here, it's 99% white, and do you know what the other 1% is? indians!" My wife corrected him by saying: "Native Americans." He then began to tell us about the merchandise at the store. According to Wikipedia, Columbia Falls actually had the following demographic breakdown in 2010: "The racial makeup of the city was 94.4% White, 0.2% African American, 1.8% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.8% of the population." Not only were his statistics incorrect, but he insulted these potential California customers (we're white by the way) by implying that the state is filled with "gooks or weirdos." Not everyone thinks that white is the best race, and that a white utopia is ideal. The art, well there were a few gems. The antiques, not so much.

Anyway, we really fell in love with the art from Matt Flint - and ultimately that's what we purchased. Nate Colson and Jennifer Li two other artists we liked as well. Their website is up to date and a great resource to view the collection.
