We contacted Karen at Whitfield Cars in Dover about doing a 3-hour private tour of the area prior to boarding our ship. Karen provided reasonable rates, was very helpful, answered all my questions and we arranged for Mick to pick the 4 of us up at the train station. The tour was exceptional and very informative at which point we were dropped off directly in front of the main door to board the ship. Mick was born in the Dover area and is extremely personable, providing a tour of primary areas with a strong knowledge of the history and key historical sites. I would highly recommend Whitfield Cars for their professionalism, booking process and highly enjoyable and informative tour. It was such a great start to our transatlantic journey!

Of course, this meant I didn't have any accommodation set up in advance. But the lovely Albanian taxi driver who met me at Canterbury West station rang some hotels while driving me to others to find a suitable room during Freshers Week (who from Australia knows what that is?) with most places fully booked. I really needed two nights in the one spot so I wouldn't have to drag myself out of bed by someone else's timetable. With plenty of drunk students roaming the midnight streets, it really was wonderful to have such a taxi driver turn around the image of being taken advantage of when vulnerable in an unknown city. Many thanks (& I know other customers have been very happy too because of the calls coming in while I was in his car and he had other drivers look after them for him). Only sorry I didn't ask his name to thank him here personally.

The Loop connects the cities of Margate, Broadstairs, Ramsgate and Westwood within the Isle of Thanet. During daytime, the buses run every 10 minutes. They run until 11.30 pm, from 7 pm every 30 minutes. The tickets are from 60 p, depending on the distance. Day tickets for the Isle of Thanet cost GBP 2.60. The buses are a good alternative to go around the Isle of Thanet. We went on the Loop as often as possible.
