In our restoration of a 100+ year log cabin, we were crushed to discover that the fireplace, built…read morearound a rusting heatilator insert, was unsafe. One mason we contacted feared the entire chimney would collapse, estimated it would cost $50K or more, and told us to just buy an insert. Our restoration contractor called Mike who owns Michigan Stone & Boulder. Mike clearly knows big rocks and fireplaces! He has his own stone yard and has seen scores of these in his long career. Mike talked to us about what we wanted from stone color to boulder size to design. He spoke confidently about what was possible, what he would recommend and priced the project at less than half the former estimate. We learned you cannot underestimate the value of experience in this work. Mike recognized that the chimney/flu were sound. After some selective demo, they constructed a beautiful firebox, installed a new damper and built the core of a new fireplace using the existing chimney and flu. Mike selected interesting stones to design a fireplace with an arched opening and a raised hearth. Mike and his men took care to build the fireplace paying attention to size, symmetry, color. We could not be more pleased. Mike brought all of his years of experience to this job to create a lasting and usable fireplace that is central to our restoration and enjoyment of this cabin. We are confident in the quality of the work. The fireplace looks like it's been in our historic cabin forever. Mike listens carefully, but is not afraid to make recommendations always with his reasoning. He is no nonsense, confident in his craft and a man of the highest integrity. He and his crew moved steadily through the job, carefully selecting each stone and throughout, seemed as proud of their work as we were pleased.
