Dean Court Hotel

Location, location, location!…read more You honestly can't beat the location of the Dean Court Hotel which is situated across from the York Minister. Prime location for walking the city walls, the Shambles, and more. Our room was tiny but there was room to prop suitcases on the desk and luggage rack. The bathroom was nice and modern and a good size in comparison to the room. Breakfast was included and I enjoyed coffee, yogurt and fruit. Some of the items on the breakfast line weren't available such as the breakfast lemon cake. Our only problem was that there was no hot water for showering in the morning!! Apparently there was a power outage in the middle of the night and hot water was not restored yet. When we checked out in the morning they were very nonchalant about it and didn't even really apologize for the inconvenience. They just stated the fact that it was out. It was definitely disappointing to not be able to start our day with a hot shower.

This is a lovely hotel in an excellent location. The concierge and valets were outstanding-helpful,…read moreattentive, and very personable. The one gentleman shook all of our hands as we left which was so nice. We had breakfast at the Rise twice, very good, and dinner once, which was good though only as one server was working our side of the busy dining room, it was slow. We stayed in the modern wing in a family room which was spacious and lovely. In terms of negatives, the mattress was hard and lumpy, and there was the only one small hook to hang towels and robes, so not much room for our party of three. I mention this because the Grand has a sustainability focus and encourages guests to re-use towels, which we did: more hooks are needed. The reading lamps on the headboard did not work. The major problem we had was the temperature of our room: the thermostat read 16 but it was more like 20; too warm for sleeping. I called down to reception and concierge and there was no answer - multiple times - I think perhaps the phones were malfunctioning. I reached an operator who said she'd leave a note as she was leaving in five minutes. I went down to the front desk and the staff member told me she could adjust it from a control panel in the lobby (?), however, the room stayed too warm. This definitely took away from the experience as I didn't sleep well and expected better from a five star hotel. Lastly, and this is small, but the greenery out front (topiaries and flowers) and in the hallways are plastic, again, not five star. For a hotel focused on sustainability, natural plants would be much more suitable.

The hotel is old and overwhelmingly big, but the location couldn't be better and the buffet breakfast with their beetroot smoked salmon was something we are STILL talking about. One of the spa employees was a real ditz, killing a star off the review. But on another visit, we had a tour of the vault, because my curious george husband HAD to see it (that is where the manicures happen). Upgraded room was super spacious and made for a lot of comfort with all the ammenities that make a "getaway" vacation special!

There is a safe and a fan in the room. The blackout curtains are top notch and the hotel was very quiet at night. The location is unmatched, you can get to anything you want quite quickly. The bedding is soft In texture, the towels and toiletries were also very nice. The gym is excellent quality equipment. Kids eat breakfast free and my daughter really enjoyed it, tons of options. The staff was all very friendly and valet parking was great and you can extend your parking past checkout a bit. If Hilton could fix the beds, this could be five star.

The staff is warm and welcoming, "special shout out to Ian", it was clean, the grounds were beautiful, the room was spacious, complimentary KitKats and beverages in the room daily, and great bathroom. A quick note on the subject of the bathroom; it was good size, had a tub with shower, great water pressure, plenty of hot water, and good quality complementary toiletries. There is a restaurant onsite serving delicious woodfired cooked pizzas with great service. The bar was warm and welcoming with attentive staff and lively conversations. On top of everything else it is a nearly perfect location. You are a quick walk from the train station and the center of town where all of the attractions are located. This hotel does not have AC in the rooms but it is York so usually that would not be much of a problem but when we visited it was a heat wave. That being said they did give us a fan and it was really not that bad because it stayed reasonably cool as well as it cooling more at night. In short I cannot recommend this hotel enough and we look forward to hopefully staying there again if we are so fortunate.

They have cereal, breads, wafers, english breakfast, yogurt, nice coffee machine with different coffee types to choose from (plus hot chocolate), some juice selection, and a variety of tea. There's a lot of tourists staying in this hotel though so you better go to breakfast early to get a seat. The room doesn't have a refrigerator but you can ask for ice at the front desk. You can also request for a bath mat since the shower floor is a little slippery. You also need to bring conditioner if you use one since theirs was watered down and they didn't refill their lotion bottle too. For people with babies, a crib can be requested too. The room size was a bit small though. If you want to have your room cleaned, you have to tell the front desk.

In face all of the staff was very eager to help with any questions we had. Parking is in the same building just a few steps away from the front desk. I had asked for a riverview room, but they messed that up somehow and we ended up with a room with a window beside the sidewalk, which was not the greatest. The tub was very high and slippery. My SIL fell in her tub getting out and ended up with some bruises - nothing serious thankfully. No breakfast is included and we were not able to get reservations at a time that worked for us. A little bit of history I have learnt is that it was built in 2000 and was devastated by the great flood, just after opening. It appeared on television with residents being rescued by boats. Two little things that stops me giving it five stars, firstly no room service, so no breakfast in bed. The other is the price in the bar for certain drinks, although not so bad as many pubs and restaurants are within a few minute walk. If your looking for a clean, comfortable hotel at reasonable prices with no frills, you won't go far wrong here.

First, the service was atrocious. It was a miracle if we could even lay eyes on a server once every half hour. I ate half my steak with no drink because I couldn't hail someone down. Second, the atmosphere is very blah. Feels like a bunch of separated small rooms (which is probably why the servers can't see you half the time). Not festive. Not playing fun music. Nothing. Third, half the options for food weren't even available when we came in at 7pm on a Tuesday: no steak pot pie, no vegetable pie, no duck, no paella, etc. Fine, ok -- we figured some things out. A tasteless parsnip soup, an equally tasteless (and weirdly mushy) duck and leek terrine, and a charred ribeye that tasted burnt without looking like it (speaks to a charred grill that hasn't been cleaned). Won't be back. Want a good steak? Go to the Whippet Inn. This place is a disgrace.
