We stayed here for three nights out of 11 nights in England, and this was the highlight of our trip. Some of us go to England looking for historic, romantic England. This is where to find it. Imagine a beautiful hotel with exceptional friendly personal service where 400 year old paneling hides a 900 year old wall (and with Roman pillars inside on either side of the entrance door - not moved there but already there), with views of spectacular neighboring Yorkminster, with gorgeous grounds where you can be served food and drink bordering the city wall (inside the wall) with York's only private access to the wall, with gardens growing a lot of the food you eat in the restaurant, with amazing breakfasts starting with fresh squeezed orange juice, with short walks through ancient streets to other ancient streets, with the magnificent cathedral within a couple of minutes' walk. We attended an Evensong service there, which I recommend. There are even good buskers here. We were sorry to leave.
We hadn't been in England since our honeymoon 44 years ago and this is the main reason we want to come back. read more
