I recently had three items cleaned for $20 with a two business day turn around, and they've gotten out stains that I thought were for sure a new part of my wardrobe. The guy who runs the shop is really nice and always honest about his expectations for stain removal. Cross dry cleaning problems off your list, because we've got this sorted. I happen to live on Spring Street, so these guys are literally a hop, skip and a jump from my doorstep. So thankfully my laziness made the decision for me. And boy have I put these guys to the test. "Um... I'm going to the races in three hours and my dress is a mess. Can you save me?" Alas, they couldn't dry clean my garment (yes I confess it had been worn and irresponsibly returned to wardrobe less than pristine). But the press they gave it was so good, the perfect angles in this snow white Bettina Liano number detracted any attention from the marks I'd unknowingly amassed on my last wear.... And I receive dress compliments from punters all day long. But here's a Seinfeld dilemma about Abercrombie Street Laundrette: My boyfriend (who, for the purposes of this review, we shall call Cicero) was a regular customer of Abercrombie St Laundrette, in our pre-washing-machine days. Late last year, Cicero gave this laundromat a basket of clothing, asking for the usual, a wash and fold. When he came to retrieve it, the laundry man (lets call him Philbert) showed Cicero how there was a blue biro in the washing load, and blue ink got all over everything. Philbert made it abundantly clear that he was not impressed, and it was not his fault at all. Granted - it's Cicero's responsibility to frisk his own shirts of their contents before putting them into be washed. And thoroughness in laundry is not one of Cicero's strong points. BUT ... here's what we're wondering ... do Philbert & Thelma also have some responsibility here? I'm still not sure. Here's the other thing. Cicero always uses black felt-tip pens, not blue biros. So where did the blue pen come from? Philbert stood his ground, despite Cicero's protestations. Everything was stained and Philbert wasn't going to offer free dry cleaning for anything. Cicero still feels a bit hard done by, his meagre wardrobe permanently tainted by a mystery blue ballpoint. But he took his laundry back there the next week, and Thelma smiled at him and unjudgmentally washed his ripped jeans and blue-stained shirts. This all went on until we bought a washing machine (see my review of JL Services). Just a note: This place has strange opening hours ... closing on unpredictable weekdays (sorry I can't remember this precisely, but if you're in a laundry rut on a Tuesday, best to call them first). Ok, I know I may have feet the size of an underdeveloped toddler and therefore have quite small socks, but it's never been that hard for me to keep track of them. Why would it be difficult for someone in the laundry profession? Or maybe I am being harsh and there is some mysterious sock disappearing phenomenon over which we can't possibly have any control? Either way, I bet you can guess what happened when I brought my laundry to Hoang Lan. But you know what? I'm not actually as bent out of shape about it as I seem. The ladies who work in here are very nice. They hemmed a pair of my jeans one time and did a good job. They are also pretty quick with turn around. I would recommend them for mending in an instant; just hold those socks of yours near and dear.
