My (adult onset T1 diabetic for eleven years) boyfriend has been a patient of Dr. Thorsell's team for years, and we have previously been to a number of other endocrinologists in SLO, SF, NYC, and OC. None have been half as competent or caring. Her staff is friendly, helpful, and timely. We've never waited more than 15 minutes to be seen. Refills are faxed promptly to our pharmacy. We are treated with respect, which is unusual in the healthcare realm (what? your patient isn't an absolute moron?!?). They've done more for his diabetes management than any other endo, and on top of that, they can personally relate to type 1 diabetes, which helps immensely. Despite the fact that I love being able to reach them and get stuff dealt with quickly, and I don't want her to become another overbooked SLO doctor's office, I recommend Dr. Thorsell to everyone I meet who needs an endocrinologist. read more

Dr. Ashley Thorsell is dangerously bad at caring for type 1 diabetics! At my appointment she was condescending and rude! She kept insisting that I do things her way. (Even though I told her multiple times that I had already tried her suggestions and they didn't work for me because they negatively affected my health!) Living with type 1 diabetes for 28 years, I'm not exactly an amateur at managing a diabetic lifestyle and would appreciate not being treated like one. Then to add insult to injury, she kept insisting that I follow her "meal plan". When I told her that I don't have time to do that, even though I made an effort to, she made a comment that she has a 1 year old at home and still has time to eat with that meal plan! (Her "meal plan" causes my blood sugar levels to be low for most of the day which is problematic because I have 2 young kids at home. I don't have time for my blood sugar levels to be constantly low!) Stubborn behavior like that just proves how little she listens to her patients! Because, I told her multiple times that I'm a stay at home mom! I'm "glad" she has the time to eat her "meal plan" during a paid lunch break while she's at work and her child is being cared for by somebody other than their own mother (actually that may be a good thing for the child) but that routine doesn't work for me. Being a doctor she should be a little more open to the possibility that other people live different lifestyles than her own if she wants to succeed. Her office staff isn't any better either! (Maybe there is something in the office water?) For the entire time that I was a patient of Dr. Ashley Thorsell, they showed the upmost incompetence. Never once managing to be capable of a task as simple as handling my diabetes supply order. The diabetes supply company even tried to get them to cooperate multiple times. The inability of the entire office to perform their jobs correctly ultimately led to having to switch endocrinologists. I highly suggest ALL of her type 1 diabetic patients do the same! Word of advise for those considering Dr. Ashley Thorsell as your possible endocrinologist... JUST DON'T! read more

Dr. Thorsell is the best endocrinologist we have had in a decade. My son has type 1 diabetes and never have we felt more supported and cared for by a physician. Dr. Thorsell possess the unique ability to not only medically assess, but emotionally and intellectually ascertain where people are in their condition. She is an amazing teammate in this journey and as a parent, if I were gone tomorrow, I would trust my son's diabetic care to her, in its entirety, without hesitation. read more

Dr Thorsell is very kind and caring. I appreciate her practicality in adjusting my Synthroid dosages. When I have seen her in public she is happy to talk and friendly. Unfortunately I have not had a good experience with her office. At least twice I have gone to get my labs drawn and they did not have an order despite still having the voice message saying they are faxing it over now. Then twice my TSH level was extremely off (almost 0 and 16 and symptomatic) and I didn't get a phone call to adjust my dosage. It's been over a week since they received my lab results and I called them three days ago and still no return call. I know to have my order slips with me and to pick up my lab results because I don't trust her office to manage my Hypothyroidism. Again I think she is a good doctor, but I have lost trust in her staff. Unfortunately San Luis Obispo is lacking Endocrinologists. read more

One of the best endos I've seen I've been a type 1 DMV for many years and was never able to get optimal control until I saw her and her team. I read the other reviews and wanted to point out doctors can't help you unless you want to help yourself especially with diabetes. She is smart knowledgeable and understanding of the disease. She can relate and recommend from personal experience if that's not a great combo in medicine I don't know what is. I HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER! Her and her office staff are amazing! Dr. Thorsell and her office have been amazing! After our old doctor left without an explanation, my mother and I were left without a doctor to refill our prescriptions and look out for endocrinology needs. The staff at the front desk were extremely helpful in fitting us in and helping us this any of our concerns and needs. Dr. Thorsell was able to quickly and thoroughly answer our questions and get us the medicine and treatment we needed. We are very grateful to Dr. Thorsell and her staff! I have been living with Type 1 Diabetes for the past 42 years. Dr. Thorsell is unlike any other endocrinologist I have ever been treated by. She not only directly relates to me as a patient (she has Type 1 Diabetes herself), but she takes the time to explain, care, and make sure that I feel comfortable. She doesn't just prescribe medication and tell me to take more insulin - she has actually taught me to control my diabetes with exercise and diet. Since I've started going to her practice, my diabetes has been under better control than ever before. Dr. Thorsell is a god-send! I have been with the office a little over a year, I never have been wowed but continued to go back. One of the MA's is so rude to staff and patients that I have started to build up anxiety about coming here. Once she asked me where my glucose monitor and food log binder was I told here I had it and didn't give it to the front while checking in because they didn't ask for it, she proceeded to tell me they always forget things and I should "shove it in their faces next time" Little to say being a front office manager myself I was less than pleased with her. Yesterday I arrived for my appointment at 3:20 check in time was 3:45 I always arrive early. I was taken back at 3:47, my vitals were checked and I was lead to and additional room to "wait" ... I waited until 4:30 and was brought back to another room to "wait" Dr. Thorsell walks in and asked me if I'm okay. When I proceeded to tell her I was upset about the wait her demeanor changed and she got very defensive stating she's the only doctor around her that specializes in pregnancy and endocrinology and that she's short staffed and on and on. When I told her I was wondering if the practice was to busy to handle my care she told me that her front office is double booking patients and she does not have enough feet and hands to cover and I could go elsewhere. When I told her I was trying g to give her my point as a patient she said I was wasting her time! Are you kidding me? I am your patient the reason you have a job to come to every day, I choose to come to you and had I shown up an hour late would you still have seen me? Is my time not as valuable as yours? You need to do a thorough cleaning of your practice and your personal bed side mannerisms! Look up lean and process improvements, send your self and your staff to customer service training and for the love of patients do not let this continue. read more

My name is Nichole and I'm transgender and I just saw the most wonderful doctor in the world. Dr Thorsell came and talk to me like I was a human being. She took the time to go over my labs and to explain and answer any question I had about them. Dr Thorsell took the time to find out about my child hood. She explained all the risk of being on hormones and blockers. She made sure that I got time to ask her question and she went into detail about the answer. I was nervous to see her because I had a bad experience with another endocrinologist. Dr. Thorsell made me feel as if I was at home. I went in nervous came sound the happiest woman in the world.
