It is 2:00pm and I am in Dallas, TX trying to help my sister in Shreveport, LA find a local reputable automotive repair shop. Thanks to YELP and internet searches, I found Ashley Automotive Repair, 318-841-0255, located at 870 Bert Kouns Industrial Loop, Shreveport, LA 71118. Rusty was so nice and a what pleasure to speak with on the phone. I provided the auto year, make, model, part needed and Rusty was able to provide me with a great estimate on the repair costs. Rusty said it was a fairly simple repair and would not take long. How long would it take? Rusty said if she could come in now, they would have her out by closing time today! Yes, today. If not, come in tomorrow, and they would get her auto taking care of. That in itself if fantastic! Let me verify, I am definitely not a mechanic. However, I did watch several YouTube videos to educate myself in how much work and detail was involved in the repair. Depending on the year, make and model, it can be a fairly simple job... or a really hard, long process. Please note: I did in fact call another local business for the same exact repairs mentioned above. I was told to bring the auto in, leave it for a few days and they would try to make the repairs sometime by the END of next week. Cost? Ashley Automotive turned a Christmas disaster into a true Christmas blessing! My kids and I were on our way to Venice Louisiana for three days of off-shore fishing on December 28th 2011. We stopped at the Louisiana border welcome center for a stretch and bathroom break. While waiting for the kids to return I checked over our 1988 Suburban (with 207k miles). Checked the oil, antifreeze, etc..all good. I then looked uner the vehicle and notice alot of oil leaking around the pinion seal of the differential. I crawled under and inspected and felt the differential, it was hot. So hot I couldn't touch it. This was at 2:00 in the afternoon. Called auto supply house in Waskom, TX and they suggested I talked to Brian the owner of Slic's. Went to see Brian and he was kind enough to pull the filler plug to check the oil level and oil came out. Brian could not do the repair but thought D&B gear could. Got to D&B Gear and they now only work on big rigs. So we began driving towards Shreveport looking for a repair shop. Stopped in at Hagedorns on 70th and asked if they worked on differentials.."No but that man standing over there does...Ransom Ashley". Introduced myself and described my problem, Ransom called his brother Wayne. Wayne tolds us to come right over, he would get someone to take a look at our suburban. Got to Ashley Automotive and they had it up on a rack within 5 minutes. Within 20 minutes Ron had it apart far enough to tell me the bad news. Bad pinion bearing and probably bad axel bearings and would take several hours to repair. Though it was bad news, it wasn't a fishing trip killer...We had called Enterprise Car rental around 3:00 and had reserved a Yukon XL; we would arrive very early Thursday morning but would still be able to meet Captain Hunter at 5:00 am at Venice Marina. We called Enterprise at 4:45 to have them deliver the Yukon, just down the road about 5 miles. Manage Paul Leone said they were on their way, so we bagan to unload the fishing gear. At 5:30 we got a call from the driver "Ron" that said he went to the other Ashley's Automotive in Bossier City, and that he was now on his way to us. At 6:00 I tired to call "Ron" back...voice mail. Called "Ron" again about 10 minutes later...voice mail. Called the Enterprise office, they are now closed for the day. Called Enterprise "800" number, and they told me they were closed. Explained our situation to them, we have a reservation and no car, put on hold for about 20 minutes and then connected to another Enterprise location that was even closer to us. Talked to the manager at that location who told me that he had a Yukon XL available, but they were closed and he had a "previous engagement" and could not help us, but they would be open tomorrow morning. I went into greater detail as to why this trip was so important to me and the kids: My wife had been diagnosed with stage four breast cancer recurrence, and that in the future we would need to stay close to her. To which he replied I'm sorry there is nothing I can do, we are closed and I have a "previous engagement". I told him that in the length of time we have been on the phone we could have walked to his location and rented the Yukon. He said, "No we are closed." So there we were, our plan "B" Enterprise Car Rental turned out to be a complete zero. "Ron" never showed up and Corporate people could not find him. Seeing our dire situation and the dissapointment of my kids (and probably me as well) Wayne Ashley pulled up in his wife's Chevrolet trailbazer, handed me a key and said "ya'll have fun!" "Don't loose that key, that's the only one I have." I couldn't believe it...within 15 minutes we loaded what we could and were on our way to Venice, Louisiana...Fishing Capital of the World! Were it not for Wayne Ashley and his wife our trip would have been a disaster. I cannot say enough to show my appreciation for the kindness of Wayne, Ron and Jo Ray at Ashley Automotive.
