Once the space was ready, our therapists came in ushered us down the hall. Serena and Kim introduced themselves, asked about preferences and washed no time getting us comfortable. We booked deep tissue massages, which were a little too aggressive for me, my husband loved it. On the way out, the receptionist asked about sakes, offering their monthly program, which my husband opted to join, a three month commitment before cancellation. There are also restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance, as well as dedicated parking in the adjacent lot. The property has some lovely bee and butterfly friendly gardens. My only feedback would be to perhaps have some chairs for outdoor seating pre- or post-service. While this spa doesn't have all the amenities of a larger spa, the coziness of the property and especially the quality of the services will more than compensate. I said I have had many massages before, almost all deep tissue. I received an almost lecture about how massages are getting more popular (?) and most people think they want a deep tissue massage, but they really want a Swedish massage with firm pressure. I was confused about the hesitance to book me for a service they offer and asked if there was different availability for deep tissue. I was told no. I booked my usual deep tissue. I arrived to my appointment 10 minutes early after having completed the forms online, and my appointment started over 20 minutes after my scheduled time. Before starting, my massage therapist made a comment while I was on the table that she doesn't know how so many people get deep tissue massages. I was already puzzled by the attitude towards my preference, and this was a strange way to begin what was supposed to be a relaxing experience. It was all just bizarre. Deep tissue massage seems to be a very normal thing for massage spas... I don't know why it is such a sticking point at Hand & Stone. The room was cold and felt sterile. I had a fan blowing on my feet the entire time. And the music was oddly techno/upbeat and not super relaxing. The sheets kind of smelled like stale hotel linens. It wasn't a luxurious experience by any means. I had requested special attention to my neck and shoulders, but it was a lot of limb work. All very well done!!! But very limited attention to my problem areas. Afterwards, my masseuse said she'd like to work on my neck and shoulders more next time... right before I received the pitch for the monthly membership. The experience felt very transactional. It may be suitable for monthly maintenance massages, but it definitely didn't feel like the special treat to myself that I was hoping for.
