This shop have been here as long as I have lived. It's a huge part of SF Chinatown history. They sell traditional Chinese red envelopes with unlimited variations of designs, traditional Chinese New Years decorations and some tech stuff (aux plug or headphone plugs). Inside is a warm light (yellow), so colors/dye of decorations won't fade. It's a pretty huge space, they have red envelopes throughout the stores on very corner. Ranging and categorizing by events such as weddings, good luck, wealth, health, education, and they have a whole wall of customize last names. Today my mom bought a wedding envelope. That will be used for my cousins upcoming wedding. $3.95 and there's 2 inside. That's a pretty cheap price (Pricing depends on quality and design) Only con- The shop smells. It reeks of dry sweat and piss. There is no window installment. Idk if it's bad venting or no air conditioning or because they share venting with the chicken shop next door or because lots of homeless people piss in the alley... But they should find a fix. Because that is the #1 reason why they're not receiving business because customers aren't willing to stay in a smelly shop. And with more customers in there, the more stuffier it gets. While I was shopping today, 2 groups came in. One couple and a group of 6-8 young adults. The couple walked in and straight out. Now I know how it feels to get caught being black without my long-form birth certificate on-hand. The store lady 100% accused me of being connected with the disappearance of a lot of her 3D posters the other week. (Hint: this is despite my not once having been there before.) I'd just completed flipping through the posters to make sure I'd seen all the choices when she came up and hit me on my arm. What followed was shouting about how she remembered me from the other week, that a lot of her posters disappeared afterward, and how she didn't want that to happen again. "Do you get my message?! Do you get my message?!" If I was going to actually buy something "this time", then I was to immediately go to the register with her and pay; otherwise, I wasn't welcome. She kept mentioning she could take me inside and show me the camera footage of my supposed previous visit(s). Yet, at the register, suddenly the footage wasn't available right then - it would take about a week for her to procure a DVD of it. I'm not going to speculate whether or not a shop that small has off-site security footage storage. But other than having to get the DVD sent in from a security firm, I can't think of why it would take remotely close to a week. For reference, it takes less than 10 minutes to put security camera video on DVD (like she couldn't skip the whole DVD thing and just show me on the screen anyway). At that point, she was pressing for my name and number so she could call me upon arrival of the DVD. I was about to write them for her, but I put the pen down after a brief reflection on leaving my contact info with such a sane individual. The only thing lingering on my mind is that I kind of do want to see the footage to see who was / is masquerading around town as me. That person SHOULD be arrested, for fashion crime. read more

They closed down the big store and moved a couple of doors down to a smaller store. When I walked by here, I was actually crushed to see that the big store was gone. I found them after walking past the electric kitchen goods store. The new store is packed with merchandise. I think they got rid of a lot of dvds from their previous store because now they only have tvb videos. I picked up a multi region hdmi compatible dvd player for $75. That's a pretty good deal. read more

For merchandise this is a very unique store, good merchandise . I went back for 2 times to buy because of Chinese new year decorations. Lady who works there is very rude. I don't understand why people works in front desk cannot be so impolite , I feel they do not care for your business. I am a easy shopper , just answer my questions and I most likely will buy. I myself is a salesperson who do not want to waste anyone's time. Please do research first before buy products from them, they will not give a smile nor willing to give you information. it's so unreal. half of this recent dvd store is now devoted to selling asian snacks, bottled water and other fast food snack items. blame it on the internet, etc.. the other half doesn't seem to carry porn titles anymore.(didn't look for it but didn't see it.) it's mostly oldies but goodies. american titles sell for $2.50(not sure dvd or vcd) recent hong kong titles (vcd) sell for $1. looks like only one clerk is on duty for the whole shop. maybe this is only in the mornings. on the cutting floor -new titles may be on sale for 20-30% off listed price. (didn't really check, just saw the big sign) -not sure if korean titles are available -did not see any more shaw bros films. -movies just a curiosity now as i mostly watch dramas online. read more

AsiaStar carries a pretty big selection of VCDs and DVDs to choose from. But mainly its all Asian movies.. Im a big VCD person, and I love watching HK movies. So when there is a name of a movie I cant think of, I can always find it by the actor or actress. And thats what I like most about this place..they jus have this one wall with vcds categorized under which actor/actress was in it. Now the prices are alright..i know there is a cheaper place to go to but this place is great place if you dont wanna have to flip through 100's of VCDs to look for the one you want. This is the mini Asian Best Buy , the Chinatown version. A whole wall filled with Asian soap Operas, Dramas, Comedies and I have no clue what else. A plethora of chargers, adapters, off brand Dre Beats pill wireless speakers (in an assortment of colors of course). Remote control cars, helicopters and a ton of other little gadgets to amuse people. There was a young, teenage white kid working there and an old Asian man, neither of them spoke to me, kinda awkward, I had no intention on purchasing anything either way, so I didn't mind it. read more

The Chinatown location of AsiaStar is very cluttered and specific titles are not as easily found here. The main street level is divided into two sections with region-free DVD players and music DVD's and VCD's on one side and television / movie releases on the other. You will find mostly VCD's on the main level and just a handful of fairly new-released DVD titles. Most of the DVD features are located in the basement level. There are special sections for Korean, Japanese and other Asian titles downstairs. There is also an adult section down there. The big drawback is there is really no organization of the titles in this store. If you have the time to browse that would be your best bet, but don't count on any of the employees here to help you find a specific title because they'll be as lost as you are. They have quite an inventory of Asian titles here, but poor organization makes for a bad shopping experience. read more

this dvd store is one of the great things about chinatown. this store is 2 floors stocked full of dvd, vcd & music. the main floor has mainstream, family, children, music cd, multi region dvd players & of course karaoke machines. the downstairs level is mainly adult import dvd & vcd. there is a large variety of dvd & vcd to be purchase here in almost every genre, asian to american, vintage kung fu flicks to anime, martial arts instruction to cooking & current releases. most of the dvd & vcd here are region free but there are a few that are region coded for china so beware. check the back of the package to make sure you buy right. most films are in chinese either mandarin or cantonese with english subtiles. they do not carry any bootleg films here, all dvd & vcd are of pretty good quality (picture & sound), sealed & new. the prices are extremely low, 4.00 -5.00 for a vcd & 8.00 - 14.00 for a dvd. there are frequent specials so look around for the deals such as buy 3 & get 10% off, etc... they also have a frequent buyers card to earn a free dvd. while there are plenty of cd, dvd & vcd stores in chinatown, this one is the largest & offer the best in selection & price. they do speak some english so asking for help is not a problem. they do accept credit card & atm with minimum purchase otherwise cash. no worries, there are plenty of nearby atms. street parking here may be kind of hard during the weekend, but there are several parking lots in the area. they also have 2 other locations in the city, one in the richmond district (clement street) & the other in the sunset district (irving street). i have found though the selection is best in chinatown. read more

when you go to any store, the clerk talks with a strong non-flent accent in Cantonese, this person is from China. asiastar fantasy is one of the stores owned by mainland chinese people and do not seem to understand the meaning of respect and knowing the facts about their products in straight detail. a year ago, asiastar fantasy on grant street was getting rid of all VHS tapes. the price was 1.00 per tape. all the tapes were out of order. no beginning tape 1, no middle part or no ending. unless, you are lucky like me able to find a complete set of a tv series. while looking at the tapes, a rude 4 eye female clerk (4 eyes means someone wearing glasses in chinese) shout out to me "why am i so outdated still owning a VCR"???? excuse me, "outdated"?? i don't see how speaking in broken cantonese in updated. go to any TVB store and you will still find the latest series on VHS and DVD, the same thing with Japanese and Korean video stores at the market down in South Bay. when looking at the tapes trying to find a set, she kept walking back every 5 minutes to snoop around and continue to speak out "people buying VHS are outdated". then, i told her....VCD is getting replaced by DVD and why are you (referring to the store) still selling outdated VCD players and VCDs if VHS is consider outdated for those Mainlander. when i finally ready to make a purchase (complete tv series), this 4 eye girl with a strong cantonese accent manage to put 30 VHS tapes in one bag. i told her to seperate them into 2 and she make up something that i am not putting 5 tapes in so many bags. excuse me, but i never said that. she was already rude enough at first and still cheap enough to save a bag like other mainlander. never again will i buy from this store. i am going to the store on Jackson Street with better selections and service. The price is the same. Also, AsiaStar Fantasy also owns the VCD/DVD store on Broadway Street down a few steps. That store is run by a old guy also with a Mainland accent. DON'T EVER BUY FROM THIS COMPANY!!!!!! I bought a internet media player from this company. When they were introducing me the product they said many good things about the product and say you will have many media to watch and in good quality. We go by customer satisfaction and guarantee that it will work. When I tried the product at home 80% of the media didn't play or in choppy quality. I brought it back to them and they told me I can't guarantee the media you want to watch will work, but some stuff does work. If the media that I wanted to watch doesn't work then what good is the product to me. I requested a refund. The owner said we printed on a flyer no return policy in Chinese. I told him I don't read Chinese you don't have anything printed in English? His respond was if you asked I would have told you our return policy. Since you did not ask, so I didn't tell you. I think that is total scam. Then he offer to returns the product with a 25% restocking fee. What a good gain. Sell the customer a unusable product and charge a 25% restocking fee. read more
