Thrillhouse Records is a must visit if you're in the area and a fan of records! My fiancé and I were in the area after having brunch and not in a hurry to leave San Francisco just yet.. I looked around the neighborhood on maps and found out this place existed. My fiancé is a big fan of vinyl records and is always looking to add to his collection so I figured this would be a good place to bring him.. and it was. Parking is all along the streets and you can probably get away with parking at the Safeway nearby if you're quick about it. The inside is fantastic - I've been in record stores before where everything is everywhere and not properly labeled, but Thrillhouse has sections labeled to help aid in your search for whatever it is you're looking for and I appreciate it. Amazing record store with an authentic vibe and awesome selection. Although the aesthetic is punk, they have a great assortment of local and international music, and you can find as much variety there as you'll find at most other San Francisco vinyl shops. I was told that everyone who works there, does it on a volunteer basis, which really impressed me. The staff is definitely knowledgeable and helpful. The price is set reasonably and their one dollar and three dollar rec collections sometimes have some fun stuff in there, not to mention a pretty solid CD collection, priced to move. love love love this place! they always have good records there and they have shows in their basement^^ i've accidentally caught some of their shows and its not a very tall space and rarely packed, but all the bands ive seen there have been awesome! good sound and atmosphere^^ the cashiers are always cool and ive rarely seen them without a smile on their face! im not a local (from sacramento) but i always make sure to stop by here whenever i visit sf. even if i dont buy records theres usually someone there who likes the record youre looking at and will tell you all about it lol very much recommended going here to simply enjoy your time! read more

It's tough being a fan of Heavy metal music when it comes to vinyl, since a lot of places over price their metal records selection. That's not the case here at Thrillhouse records. Great store with a fine selection. Excellent prices and careful vinyl grading so that you always know what you're getting. On my last visit I found a few records from the band; Shadows Fall and since they broke up, their albums have sky-rocketed to the top in price, and bought them before they go out of print. Hardly any records stores these days sell metal music on vinyl and if they do it's rare, I will defientely go back to go through their massive heavy metal record selection when I have the time. There are also days where I could give less than a single shit about flipping through the benign "Rock" or "Indie" section at Rasputin. The selection is limited at best, but the prices are so affordable that you're practlcally guaranteed to walk out with at least one or two CDs or LPs or 7" singles and feel like you just robbed a bank. TIED FOR BEST IN THE BAY W/ 1234GO!!! ok, anybody out there remember the awesome epicenter records on valencia at 16th? well it closed way back in the late 90s but thrillhouse is its illegitmate baby and it fuckin rules! thrillhouse has a great collection of current indy punk and hardcore records plus used stuff too. looking for that 7" that made everyones top ten list in MRR? thrillhouse will have it! it isn't big but its stocked with quality hard to find vinyl. plus, like epicenter, its collectively run and hosts killer shows. the basement is the venue for the gigs which end early and aren't super well advertised. the people that work there are friendly and you probably already know if you go to DIY punk gigs. another fuckin awesome bonus is there is a turntable there complete with headphones so you can listen to records before you buy them! that way you can sift thru the shit and find the gold and not blow your hard earned cash on a record that blow. btw, thrillhouse is cash only. plastic isn't punk! fuckin go there now and buy some records! its out on mission past ceasar chavez around cortland. when you're done you can get indian pizza at zante's or pupusas at zocalo or a burrito down at cancun since its in a part of the mission that doesn't suck ass yet! i love this place! read more

Preface: punk is not my bag. Other than The Misfits, maybe some Ramones, there is nothing to that musical genre that does anything for me. So, with that in mind it should be little surprise that I didn't walk out with anything after a visit here. They had a dearth of metal records, or most any other genre for that matter. This place is almost exclusively for those into punk and its derivatives. I will say that they've got outstanding pricing here. Many of the new albums they carry have a price tag lower than what you'd find at Amoeba or similar stores. Generally, these smaller independent shops are priced a bit higher to cover the fact they aren't making as much as whatever majors are still around, but this place takes the opposite approach and offers great prices as a major incentive to buy. My brother walked out with a stack of records, all bought at very nice prices. Downside (for me): the music playing here is loud (fuck, do I sound old or what?) and it's the kind of chaotic gutter punk that is mostly repeated bar chords and unintelligible shouting. If that isn't your thing, you'll find it as intolerable as I did. Also shitty: there are a couple of chairs outside the front door, and two people decided it would be cool to sit there and smoke. Isn't shopping so much better when cancerous death fumes are infiltrating your every orifice, with no escape in sight other than to leave the building? Have some consideration, shitheads. read more

I really like this store and always find something to walk away with..like a previous reviewer said it reminds me of the old Epicenter.on valencia. Epicenter had a political agenda that his place doesnt and was started by Tim Yohannon. Im not sure who runs this place but I know they are music fanatics Whenever I have gone in the staff have been friendly enough( think there volunteers). Great selection of new and used vinyl. Vintage and new lps singles. Lots of small import and local labels and a great bonus...you can listen to everything anything on a turntable with headphones before buying. if your nostalgic for zines they've got that to. One of the best punk record stores I've ever been to. Keyword: "punk". If yr not into such subcultures and scenes, this is not the place you should go. They'll have classic releases, and hidden gems, and all sorts of new pressings of everything I feel I need. Saints, X-Ray Spex, Screamers, Crass, World/Inferno, I could literally go on for hours. What's all the more impressive is that this is entirely volunteer-run. This record store is a labor of love, and cities across the country need more places like this. In fact, Thrillhouse probably shouldn't even have a Yelp! They're not a business, they're a collective. Kudos to them on their wonderful selection, and their sacred mission. Bonus: They also sell some old Genesis, SNES, and NES games. They carry miscellaneous cassette tapes, and this store IS named after Milhouse Van Houten from 'The Simpsons'. read more

A really great, community-oriented punk record store. It's volunteer run, so sometimes the guy at the counter is drunk, but that just increases the mystique. They used to have shows in the basement, but the fire dept. put a swift end to that, so the basement is now entirely devoted to art projects. Went to see Black Rainbow there, got there early, stepped out to Mitchell`s for some ice cream on a nice, cold, Summer in The City....by the time I got back they started stamping people and asking for donations. Fair enough, but for a (ex) punk five bucks is five bucks! The venue has a nice, low ceiling and I have yet to see the record store...and probably won`t. This record store in Bernal Heights is pretty rad. Wasn't sure what to expect coming in but they have a pretty nice selection of both new and used vinyl and the pricing is pretty reasonable. Not the biggest store but it's packed pretty nicely in here. There are some hip hop records and some jazz as well but the bulk of the selection is rock, and punk more specifically. I don't listen to a whole lot of punk anymore but I came away impressed with their selection regardless and ended up grabbing a couple lps. Even better, when I was checking out I noticed a Line 6 interface sitting on the counter. It caught my eye because it had XLR inputs and my current interface does not. I asked if it was for sale and he said it was. When I asked how much, he shrugged and then said, "I dunno... 5 bucks?" I thought he was kidding until he asked if I wanted to buy it. To be fair, it was pretty beat up and didn't have any of the cables so I'm not even sure it works, but for $5 I'm willing to gamble. I'm a fan. Friendly staff, good selection of vinyl and a random assortment of used gear. Come through if you're in the neighborhood. read more

Almost all the old records are well-disguised reissues (save for the used bin in the back), so don't get too excited. At least they're marked as "new". I can't hold that against this place though, because there's no other way to maintain this kind of selection. And their listening station is a big plus. read more

It's a small hole in the wall and you are probably not going to find a major score here. But the records they do have are cheap and fairly priced (both new and used). The store focuses on punk and hardcore and serves a nice little niche. There are also in the basement from time to time. Always a party. Yay a record store for punk stuff! Selection is kind of small but I've seen and picked up a lot of records that I like there. There used to be shows in the basement but I heard from a friend that they're not allowed to do it anymore. That's too bad because I saw a lot of good bands at Thrillhouse: Toys That Kill, Shang-a-Lang, The Ergs, No People, etc. I saw them selling the Blotto cd here, so that alone would be automatic 4 stars. Why not 5? The selection is really small, I wish they had more, but what they do have is top notch really. When I walked in here the other day, I started half-blindly grabbing things off the shelf because it all looked so amazing and wonderful to me! I was on a budget, though, so about halfway through my shopping experience I had to decide what to put back and what to keep. That is how much cool shit they have in this record store that is the size of my living room! It may be small, but this store is like a baby kitten: tiny, cute, but never fails to give you exactly what you're looking for. Okay, maybe that's not the best analogy for most people, but hopefully you cat people see what I'm trying to say with that analogy. The thing that made me give this place a five-star rating was the fact that I saw Hummingbird of Death on a 12". I have been looking for this artist for a while since I foolishly let someone borrow my HoD cd years ago and never saw it again. Seriously, when I saw this record here, my faith in humanity was restored! Of course I bought it, are you kidding me?? The punky hipster dude at the check out counter was pretty damned awesome as well. He wasn't all douchey about it when I attempted to strike up a conversation with him because that's what I do, damnit. We had a brief conversation about record store shopping and then I walked back to BART grinning ear-to-ear. Cash-only for this volunteer-run diamond in the rough! As a record shop, you have all the necessary punk/hardcore records as well as hard to find ones. Great selection all in all. Prices are relatively cheap...at least cheaper then Amoeba. I remember picking up the latest Inepsy album there at a Lebenden Toten show for only $7. As a venue, this place is awesome. Although I'm not sure if they still put on gigs here, I remember seeing plenty of great shows a few years back. Some of the more notable ones were Lebenden Toten (PDX), Fy Fan (Sweden) and many more. All ages, no real rules. BYOB, smoking is cool. To simplify, it was a small basement with the roof and pipes inches from your head. Dimly lit with the smell of spilled beer and smoke. Sound was decent, but who really cared when seeing a band in such an intimate setting. Also, huge A+ for being in the city. After some of the lesser known DIY "venues" shutdown over the years (RIP Tehama, Warmwater) this place is awesome in location and relative ease to get there (driving or busing). Great little spot that keeps SF punk alive

Visited this record store once 2 years ago and the selection of Cd's and records their was amazing. Definitely a lot of great things that I couldn't afford at the moment. The Cd selections cases were opened with the disc held at the counter so I happily spent some time checking out a bunch of CD booklets. Ended up buying the Shaky Bones ep and some 7inch record that I was very happy with for under $5. Service was acceptable and the store had good prices on all the things I wanted read more
