Items Selected: House Made Bread…read moreOctopus warmed over potatoes with first press unfiltered olive oil and Spanish Paprika Croquetas - Ham, Cod, Mushrooms Txuletoia Euskal Herriko Label of Distinction with Fries Cream Cake Rice Pudding Ice Cream Located at Calle Colon de Larreategui 1 and failed as a late arriving dinner just forty-five minutes after hopping off the plane Saturday evening when the dining room was overflowed it was with heightened interest that Tuesday 20h00 saw me walk into Nido, the female proprietor who'd expressed regret in turning me away this time there to greet me with open arms. Narrow but long, the bar leading to the kitchen with a few tables up front and the rest lined behind a divider to the left, it was minutes before opening that parking was allocated and walking inside without reservations the written log was consulted, plenty of room at the bar plus a duo of two-tops not yet spoken for. Oddly decorated in English Trivial Pursuit questions while music in Spanish chimed overhead, it was after several specials were offered that the menu was presented and although foie gras, ham, cheese, and tomato offerings were indeed tempting one could not ignore other traditional Basque specialties, the portions all enormous and thus explaining mostly large parties as most will need to share. Proud of their ingredients, a true mom n' pop place with the woman who'd greeted me acting as secretary, hostess, translator, and server when stopping by with warm slices of Octopus atop boiled potatoes topped liberally in salt, olive oil, and spice it was with a small break in her non-stop hustle that the simple preparation was described in great detail, her husband manning the kitchen arriving early each day to clean, tenderize, and marinade the muscular yet supple meat. Absolutely mesmerized by the opener, potatoes mostly set aside for sake of capacity since house-made bread proved far better for sopping up the paprika speckled oil, round two offered six croquettas that one is advised to to dig straight into due to the temperature, each bite virtually oilless while the fillings of cod, mushrooms, and ham were fortified with cheese and a richness quite profound. Knowing that I'd likely bit off more than I could chew in ordering a kilogram of beef after a day already filled with food atop an early start, it seemed pointless to visit Nido without a taste of the signature Txuletoia, and with an Euskal Herriko Label of Distinction proudly described by the Chef as meeting or surpassing the region's highest standards each grassy bite melted like butter on the palate with a richness rivaling even the best dry-aged steak back home at a fraction of the cost. Told that desserts should not be overlooked, all including a dozen ice cream flavors made on site, it was with a few strips of rosy red beef set aside along with a pile of fries that the meal was concluded, the cream cake no different than those served at any panaderia while the frozen rice pudding was a spot on representation of the traditional version right down to the subtle cinnamon and toothsome starchy spots.

We had a vegetarian with us and she was very accomodative. She made some good recommendations. First, wine was tasty. And also inexpensive. A great combination. For appetizers, we had the sliced tomatoes which were fresh and served with oil. Quite crisp and refereshing. Dinner was Cod traditional Basque style. The cod was done to perfection and was light and flaky. T bone on the hot rock was also ordered. I genreally do not like beef, but this was quite good. Dessert was ice cream which was rich and delicious. Overal a great dining experience in a small family style restaurant. Total bill for four people with two bottles of wine, dinner, and dessert was 240 Euros.

Nice café at the top of the hill overlooking Bilbao…read more I visited with a friend I used to with in California, after riding up on the funicular, and we ordered coffees and wine as the kitchen was closed. We luckily found an outdoor table (it was a lovely autumn day) and I thoroughly enjoyed my cappuccino, while catching up with him on family, life, and work. Will certainly be back next time I'm in Bilbao.

We entered the dining room with a reservation by our hosts, for the four of us. Sold online as offering breathtaking views of Bilboa, and their supreme specialty, large T-bone steak to share with the whole table. We were very excited while waiting to be shown to our table. And there was more than enough time for that. After a while it became painfully clear we were about as welcome a bunch Jehovah witnesses at a Muslim house at prayer time. A lady barked if we had a reservation. Yes, in writing. We were pointed at a table for four, set without any utensils, and with one seat with a missing wine glass. Reservation, yes, but they were clearly not expecting us. And there we sat, as a waiter with a not-too-clean white shirt walked by our table several times with napkins for other (empty) tables, ignoring us. Lots of time for us to notice that the view of Bilbao was almost completely obstructed by trees. Our table partner then said; "Good evening" to the passing waiter and having his brief attention, finally the menus arrived. Then we explained that we wished to order their specialty, which was listed as T-bone with a kilo price. If you, like us, have laughed at Fawlty Tower's Manuel, we must name our waiter Banuel for now on. This Banuel told that we had misunderstood something. Sure, they had T-bone steaks, but they were just one per person. Very surprising, but: "What does it come with?" "Begetables" said Banuel. "No potatoes?" "No, if you want potatoes, then I take away your begetables!" "We want both. Vegetables and potatoes!" He nodded and noted our order. Then he returned to say: "I made a mistake; the lamb steak is a large one, to share." "Not lamb, T-bone!" Banuel nodded, "Yes, the T bone steak is to share, what size do you want? By the time the appetizers arrived, they were fine but also served in a very strange manner; one was placed in the middle without any details; what it was and who ordered it. We found out later that it was for one of us, but we all ate some of it, thinking that was the meaning. Long pause before the other appetizers arrived. No bread in sight. Apart from Banuel, there was also a woman present, standing at the entrance and all she did was looking into their reservation book, turning page after page. Backwards and forwards. Our host called her three times, the first two she ignored, and the third time she walked away. By then, very few tables were occupied but every time we wanted attention Banuel would walk to these empty tables, folding napkins, and putting down glasses. We were getting annoyed and I made a remark that we did not understand the way we were being served. Banuel said that he was sorry. There came the T-bone cut in some parts, and Banuel put a small first cut on a hot stone plate and.... walked away towards his favorite place, the empty tables. We had to call him back, because what do we do now? Banuel showed how we must grill the meat, which would have been valuable information. There came one plate of fries, and away he went. Called Banuel again, where are our vegetables? "You want potatoes, so I take away your begetables!" he insisted. "But we ordered both potatoes AND vegetables!" He signed deep and after some time returned with a plate of vegetables. Much later he arrived with four pieces of bread, which looked quite nice but by now we were almost finished eating. Our host said to Banuel: "I have traveled the world and eaten in the strangest places. But I have never, ever encountered service as bad as tonight!" Banuel: "I am sorry!" Needless to say, we decided not to stay for dessert. Upon leaving, our host gave Banuel a tip. This is expected; outstanding service should be rewarded accordingly. The tip was: "Find another job. This is not suitable work for you!" Truer words have never been spoken. Meanwhile, if you want to eat here, please note: Banuel knows nothing; he is from Bilbao."
