Please get a second opinion before agreeing to any treatment here. I was quoted $9,000 for a deep cleaning and two crowns at my first visit. It seemed excessive even with insurance, so I asked for copies of my X-rays and records and brought them to an independent dentist for review. The second dentist's findings: no cavities, no fractures, no crowns needed. Deep cleaning treatment was only $220 compared to the $2,600 Aspen quoted me. That's for the exact same procedure. I can't speak to every patient's experience, but mine matched what I've since read about this chain's treatment plans for new patients. If you've been given a large quote here, you have the legal right to request your records and get an independent opinion. Do that before signing or paying anything. read more

This for me has been a great experience. First day in X-rays that were extremely affordable may I add as I don't have insurance at the moment. Tooth extraction, cleaning, then front fillings fixed all definitely more affordable than my old dentist for over 20 years. The staff has been absolutely amazing and kind. This is about the Brighton Road office. Honestly, I'm shocked about the negative reviews, but I understand that each experience can be different. Mine was outstanding, so I feel compelled to talk about it. I had to have two teeth pulled and 5 cavities filled. Yes, what a mess--everyone remember to brush AND floss! All the procedures have been completed except for 2 fillings. The staff is always consummately professional, and also reassuring and kind. My anxiety levels for going to the dentist are beyond ridiculous - bordering a phobia - and when I told them this, they did their absolute best to put me at ease (and they succeeded). In fact, this last visit, I opted to have two teeth worked on at the same time instead of two separate visits even though that meant I'd be in the dentist chair for a bit longer. Huge kudos to Bryce for being so kind and fun during my initial cleaning, as well as the other staff members whose names I didn't get. You all really did a great job, and I appreciate it. read more

Total scam. They refused to do my regular dental cleaning and instead proposed some extremely expensive procedures with huge out of pocket expenses. I tried to plead my case to the supervisors but obviously scamming is office policy. I only wanted regular cleaning. In severe pain and they make you wait for two weeks for an appointment to do a mouth investigation then over a month to get the infected tooth out. They say they only have one provider which is clearly why no one goes any more besode the poor poor service and care they provivde. read more

I've never left a Yelp review. I usually don't see the point or even waste my time. Aspen Dental in Portland has me doing this for the first time. They are without a doubt one of the worst places I've ever dealt with. I needed some time sensitive work but "their systems went down" for months. Not only could I not get the work done but I couldn't get ahold of a live person to help me out. Now they are back open and they are still impossible to get ahold of. They let you leave a voicemail and never respond. Okay I'll switch dentists but my dentist needs the x-rays from Aspen to see me. I call them and finally get through but they say nope you need to come in to sign something. Annoying but I'll do it. I show up on a Friday because my new dentist appointment just got scheduled for Monday but I can't see them until I get those x-rays. I take my time on my short lunch break to go to Aspen and I see the sign pictured that they are yet again randomly closed. even worse the receptionists are always very unpleasant with that attitudes. like I said, I hate leaving reviews, but I felt the need to do it for the first time because this is easy one of the worst places I've ever dealt with my life and I don't want anyone to ever had to experience the crap they put you through. read more

Update 04/25/24: surprised to receive at bill in the mail nearly a year after visit and thinking all ties were cut with this "provider". Bill was for X-ray taken during visit. Checked with insurance company and was told X-ray was take outside of coverage window and out of pocket. Received bill in mail last week and within the week I received phone call and text from Aspen that bill is due. Checked website to make sure they accepted cash as bill was for $116. Did not want to provide my banking information to this establishment. Paid bill via cash, $120, and was told exact amount only with no change. I told receptionist to keep change as I wanted no further contact. Couple of interesting items. Was asked for phone number for billing purposes which I provided but not in computer system. I showed copy of bill which referenced account balance. I received phone call and text for amount due but phone number was not in system at office. Also asked why billing was so late and was told there was computer issue last year which lasted several months. Asked why I'm receiving call and text only after a week of receiving bill and was told to contact corporate office. Inquired to X-ray and why as a patient that I was not informed about X-ray outside of coverage. Answer received was Aspen policy to take new series of X-rays with new patients. read more

But thanks I will call because today 4 mo later I received a random $50 charge in the mail on services covered by my insurance and Dental first. I also just heard from a friend that after waiting a month for her appt to get a cracked tooth fixed she was told she would be examined and need another appointment to actually fix it. See the thing is I had legit dental care for years until my cheap ass company insurance forced me to go to this chain. I know what dental coverage should look like. If I could give a zero I would. This office is so incompetent. Brought my elderly father in to have teeth pulled. System was down so they had me pay the full amount. I was assured they would process the claim through as soon as their system was up. Called several times to see if their system was up yet. It took 2 weeks for their system to return. Spoke to a very nice woman named Emma who assured me she was processing the claim and I would be refunded in 5 - 7 business days (this way May 15th). I still do not have the refund. I have called twice this week and left messages. No one is returning my call. I did get through to a person and she said they have a new phone system and don't know how to retrieve messages. She said she would give Emma the message since she was already working on it. STILL have not heard back from anyone yet. Keep calling and no one answers, forced to leave a message but, you guessed it, they don't know how to retrieve their messages with their new phone system. AVOID THIS PLACE! It is a nightmare! This place has changed drastically over the last year or so. It is blatantly obvious that they do not care about the general well-being of your teeth but rather are so focused on up-selling. I am in my mid-30s and have been getting my teeth cleaned twice a year my entire life. I have never required work above a cavity. Two visits ago, I was told by a dentist I had never met before that I needed a crown. I decided to think about it because something just didn't sit right with me during his diagnosis. I just didn't believe him. My last visit was when I determined I would never come back. While sitting in the waiting room, I noticed a number of marketing pieces for new services they were offering. Everything from an every 3-months gum cleaning process to Invisaline. Sure enough, during my routine visit for a cleaning, they tried to tell me I needed BOTH. They forced a $40 bottle of "special" mouthwash on me while also trying to convince me I needed prescription strength toothpaste. It was a complete sales pitch from both the hygienist and the dentist. Also, I saw the same dentist (who didn't recognize me from my previous visit) and he made no mention of me needing a crown. Unbelievable!! I have never felt more uncomfortable or distrusted a medical professional's intentions more. Please avoid this place at all cost. They are not good. read more

They also have a really high turnover of dentists, which is always a bad sign. The bathroom was filthy, and the hygienist was rude. Went in for free consultation. They looked at me for 3 minutes, said I needed expensive, multi-visit scaling cleaning for $400 and recommended Invisalign for $4k. I found Aspen Dental as an "In-Network" provider through my insurance. Being new to the area I had no prior experience with this provider and needed a routine cleaning, x-rays and examination. The receptionists at the front desk were friendly and helpful but the hygienist recommended I receive gum scaling and the doctor recommended I have a Zirconia ($$$) crown for a broken filling. Aspen Dental asked that I pay 60% of the treatment plan's cost upfront before I received either service. I DID NOT PAY anything and quickly contacted a new dentist paying for another examination and x-rays out of pocket. The new dentist told me that a Zirconia filling is no better than a regular porcelain filling and that I DID NOT need scaling. They also included a cleaning in my first appointment rather than set me up for another separate cleaning appointment. I have never had such a negative experience with a Dentist and feel bad for anyone who currently uses this provider and will warn anyone I know in need of dentistry about these disingenuous practices. read more

After an hour and a half exam and X-rays, the woman at the desk tells me my total out of pocket cost (AFTER SUBTRACTING WHAT MY DELTA DENTAL INSURANCE COVERS) was going to be $1200. I told her I can't afford that and that I thought I could get a free cleaning with my insurance and she said my insurance does cover that but "WE WONT DO THAT because it just stirs the bacteria around." She didn't try to help break anything down to see what I might be able to afford. She just handed me the tablet for my signature saying I would pay $1200 and when I refused and said I couldn't afford that she just said "ok you're all set." I have to say that Dr. Uviasah (in the Portland branch) is by far the best dentist I have been to in forever! He listened to what my needs and concerns were, and gave me ever viable option available to me. I cannot tell you how important this last point is! My previous dentist would only recommend the most expensive treatment that wasn't necessary, or at the very least, not necessary at that time. Perhaps her thought is that it would be cheaper to get that procedure done than less expensive ones, which would inevitably lead to the more expensive procedure. But that is not her call to give. Dr. Uviasah gives you all the information and leaves it up to you to decide. He is super friendly and really skilled. I changed offices to have him be my dentist, he is worth the drive! read more

I wish I could give them zero stars. I have given them my insurance cards countless times and they have consistently billed incorrectly. They have billed insurance I no longer have, not billed both my insurances and then told me they can no longer see me because of their screw ups until I pay the balance due. I told them I am not paying for something that they messed up and that I've been working in the insurance industry my whole adult life and know that I have to give my primary and secondary insurance cards. Their billing department is the most incompetent I have ever encountered. I wouldn't recommend them to fix my cat's teeth let alone anyone else because they would screw that up as well. this review is dated. this incident took place in june of 2018. i had a broken and infected tooth that was swollen and very painful. i i called aspen for an appointment but was unsympathetically advised that the earliest i could be seen was a month later ... even after clearly re-stating the nature of my emergency. fortunately i found a compassionate local dentist who immediately gave treatment. recently i have viewed advertisements by aspen portraying aspen as sympathetic and supportive especially toward veterans. as a vet i find this offensive, misleading, and false. every time i see an ad by aspen, it recalls the awful experience i had with them. read more

The good news is they got me in quickly after I broke a tooth, but it was downhill from there. I waited nearly an hour to be seen after my appointment time, had to submit to a full mouthful of x-rays rather than just the single tooth, and had a dentist who barely spoke English which made it hard to communicate. His examination took all of five minutes and he told me I just needed a crown in spite of the fact that my tooth was broken below the gum. I only discovered at check out that he had also found two cavities in my teeth, details he had forgotten to mention. While the dental assistants seemed very competent, I would not feel safe having anyone at this clinic perform something as complicated as a crown or crown lengthening. If you just need a cleaning, OK, this place serves a function. Otherwise, go to a real dentist. read more

I'm happy to say that I am finally done with the epic misery that has been my Aspen Dental experience. I can't speak to the rest of the staff (my endodontist was quite good), but Dr. Uviahsa really did a number on me and was equally judgmental and condescending throughout my time there. I won't go into all the horrific details, but please, if you care about your oral well being and being treated like a human being in general, steer clear of this Dentist in particular. When Dr. Uviasah first arrived into the area where my husband was reclined, he sat behind him and didn't announce his arrival or provide any introduction. My husband could hear him prepping but didn't know who it was since he couldn't see him. It was very strange. I mouthed to my husband that it was the dentist behind him. He was a man of few words and offered no reassurance or comfort. Dr. Uviasah's assistant, a young girl, was friendly but was VERY casual. She removed the tooth extracting tools from the plastic wrap WITHOUT GLOVES! I also watched her put on gloves later without washing her hands. Not ONCE did I see this girl wash her hands and the sink was close to us. Having two back teeth pulled while being awake is a pretty traumatic experience, we would have appreciated some reassurance, my husband's face was numb so he had no way of knowing when the first tooth came out or the second. Dr. Uviasah did not tell him first tooth is out, second tooth is out. I expected him to explain what was happening to give him hope that it was coming along and almost over. He said no more than two words while he was working in my husband's mouth. I believe this dentist and his assistant could use some bedside manner, hygenic, and profesionalism polishing. read more

Extremely low threshold for what they call an emergency worth canceling for. Of course if you ask the threshold for cancellation they have a bureaucratic excuse at the ready for why they are canceling due to a family emergency. Upselling and delays were also a problem. I had X Rays and could have had the procedure done the first time. They've postponed 3 times and refused to set in stone even after that. They constantly schedule people and blame Covid for cancellations even though all doctors had first crack at the vaccine many months ago and half of Maine has been vaccinated especially around here. There's no excuse for canceling this many times. I rearrange work schedules to get the 3rd cancellation. I am offended by the doctor's lack of willingness to tell their family no instead of tell me no 3 times. I doubt it was that severe of an emergency to do this and they admit to doing this to hundreds of patients. When a patient schedules, morally, a doctor or dentist should only cancel in extreme cases, where there's no way out. The frequency tells me they aren't doing this, and I gave them the chance to explain and they made excuses based on HIPAA. read more

BUTCHERS. My daughter ended up being rushed to the emergency room at Maine Med as a result of the butcher who took out her wisdom teeth at Aspen Dental. She has a high pain threshold, but over the course of the week after the extractions, she returned, in more and more pain, to Aspen Dental multiple times, only to have them tell her the last time that she had to see an endodontist (I should add, to HER expense), who immediately told her she needed to be in the hospital. The infection had gone into her face and throat, she had a high fever, and the surgeon (yes, that's right, she had to have EMERGENCY SURGERY AT THE HOSPITAL) told us she could have died from it. Also, she learned that they had not only overcharged for their "services" but had listed several that were completely unnecessary, in order to collect thousands of dollars. In 2019 I'm at the other side of the state and call Aspen dental near where I am and called two different Aspen dental locations. I needed a bridge to be cemented back in. It was a Friday morning. They both could not see me until Tuesday. I said it takes like 15 minutes to glue it back in, they said i would need xrays and if it wasn't the same Aspen dental dentist who did the work that I needed a complete exam and they had no time until Tuesday. I am a small business owner with no dental insurance and found Aspen Dental online. I contacted the 1-800 scheduling # because they were the only location in ME that offered free exams and free xrays and $81.00 for a cleaning. I should have known there was a catch to the free part as they would have to make up the $s in time spent somewhere. I have my teeth cleaned every 6 months and Ive never had problems with my gums. The hygenist probed my teeth to measure my gums and normally they are 1-2 and somehow a few areas were 3-5 which apparently is the starting of gum disease. Of course they recommended a different cleaning plan called "scaling" and more frequent cleanings. The scaling cleaning was going to be a charge of $212.00 vs the $81.00 quoted by the customer service representative. I requested the basic cleaning at check out and they refused to schedule the appt since the dentist recommended scaling. I called the S Portland Aspen Dental and they also refused the basic cleaning. I plan to get a second opinion and learned once again a cheap marketing ploy to get you in the door is usually too good to be true!!! read more

After about an hour I was told that they couldn't repair my dentures, that I needed new ones, and they wouldn't make new dentures for me unless I had other dental work ( about 5000 dollars worth ). Aspen dental only wants your money. They want you to be in debt. with them. They don't care about you! Only your ability to pay them. Aspen Dental is an example of terrible healthcare. I had one appointment there and will never return. I signed up for a new patient appointment expecting to get a cleaning and an assessment of any cavities. I spent an hour there without receiving a cleaning, but they did use my insurance and give me an xray, then tell me I had 7 cavities that needed filling. As someone who receives regular dental care this claim seemed absurd, so I tried to get a second opinion. Aspen Dental refused to send my digital xrays to any other dentist, saying they didn't have the software to send high-quality images while still obeying HIPPA regulations. Any decent healthcare institution would be supportive of sharing medical records to aid in patient care, but Aspen Dental made this impossible. I got the impression that they overestimated the number of cavities I had that needed filling, and then refused to share their images when I wanted a second opinion. They also strongly pushed all patients to get "state of the art oral cancer screening"-- I did research and the American Dental Association does NOT recommend a screening test for oral cancer other than a simple physical exam, especially for low risk patients (young people who don't smoke or drink in excess). Again, I felt that Aspen Dental was offering interventions to make big bucks, even if it was questionable whether these interventions were medically necessary. Turns out Aspen Dental has been criticized in the past for their practices (see url). If you choose to go to Aspen Dental, be cautious and educate yourself.
