I sliced my thumb and went to the Aspirus St. Luke's ER in Duluth, MN. The care I received was excellent; the triage nurse cleaned my thumb and assessed the damage proficiently and professionally. The ER doctor, Dr. Todd Struckman, was excellent! He had my thumb numbed and stitched up in no time; he was professional, friendly, and knew what he was doing. All in all, from admitting time to leaving, I was there about 2 hours. The cost was $130. My 5-Star review plummets to 3 because when I returned to have the stitches removed, the admitting nurse told me it would cost ANOTHER $130.00. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Another $130 to have 5 stitches removed????? Having stitches removed should be part of the 'Continuity of Care', NOT a new fee. Nor was I informed of this preposterous policy when I checked in at the Registration Desk; the nurse told me. If she hadn't mentioned it, I would have been informed of the cost AFTER my stitches had been removed. What then? This kind of lax information policy is completely UNACCEPTABLE. So, although the care I received was awesome, the double charge policy is deplorable and egregious. read more

My husband has a critical blood clot in his leg, we started with a wonderful traveling Dr, then he got given to Dr. Hood, who was sarcastic and demeaning. Then to some Tabby who never called back until tonight when the Pharmacist called her. She left a message stating even though you have a critical condition, we are not a fit for you since you had words with Dr. Hood. WTH, my husband could die from this and you more worried that he had words with Dr. Hood, that has horrible reviews and bedside manners. No wonder Aspirus cannot keep doctors. Please, think twice before going to the vascular department here, you will be sorry unless that amazing traveling doctor was back, she cared. The staff as far as nurses, ultrasound, etc were great. But who calls a patient and says that. Didn't you take an oath as a doctor to help people? I wanted to give a 0 star, but it wouldn't let me. read more

After I broke my ankle , I drove myself to the urgent care in Hermantown , where I called and asked if someone would come out and help me with the wheelchair to get into the clinic and they said they could not help because it's not their policy, so they watched me crawl across the parking lot to enter. During the workman's compensation the Doctor went behind my back and sent a note to my company saying that I can drive with my boot on which is illegal and we never talked about restrictions but he went and sent another note that was never discussed with me. What a mess this caused with insurance. I do not recommend this hospital. read more

I was visiting relatives in Michigan. I fell and broke my elbow in several places. I iced it for a week and a half before surgery. I was terrified to say the least. The Doctor and entire staff were gentle, sympathetic and the going to sleep part was the best ! I reside in Florida and I am in the process of seeking physical therapy here. My elbow hurts due to the metal plates and screws. My left arm will never be the same but it's something that I can live with. read more

Had to beg for saline in the emergency department after passing out from dehydration. I live in Silver Bay and was directed by staff at the local clinic to keep driving to Two Harbors. We should have just kept going to Duluth because Dr Ringsred was condescending and dismissive of my pain. When I complained about my treatment to the ED management, I was told they use a third party to staff their ED doctors. If you value your life, avoid care here at all costs. read more

Worst hospital stay I've ever had and I am 50 and have had organ transplants at a different hospital and many hospital stays. This was my first and definitely my last stay here. They simply do not care. I came in with what they even called a very severe fracture and they did not do a single thing to fix it. I was in extreme pain and they did very little to help with it. One of the Doctors SAID he had a plan to help with the pain which I thought would help too. Only problem is.. they are not doing it. They are doing the absolute minimum to help with the pain and fixing the problem. Also I could hear a couple of the nurses outside my room at shift change talking absolute trash about me and joking about it. I guess maybe me wanting to get some relief from my pain is too much to ask. Overall just a horrible and painful experience. read more

The care I have received in the past was FIVE STARS. My complaint is not about the care but the billing department. They continue to add additional charges onto my bill. I have asked for an itemized statement and they tell me it was sent to my email. The only emails I get are from billing with no itemization. They tell me It was mailed 7-10 today is 7-29 19 days and I still have none. It's coming from WAUSAU WI. I live 200 miles away in Duluth, MN. I could have walked to Wausau in 19 days. Now they are emailing me $60.00 charge for an Xray that my insurance tells me there should be no charge associated with that Xray. Trying to get help at Aspirus business office is like pulling teeth. read more

My mom broke her femur in eight pieces the surgeon did a good job but the care she received was not good she waits hours for pain medication, she has been in the same gown since she got there fri may 2nd ,ect I forgot to mention that she can't put any weight on her leg for 8 weeks. I have been trying to get much needed diabetic medication since June 9th 2025. My insurance states that the prior authorization is all set and good. My pharmacy also states that they are just waiting for the Grand Avenue clinic to send it in to them. I have called Aspirus a few times, thinking I was calling the Grand Ave clinic to speak with someone. What I actually got was a call center and having called two times to this call center I was told both times that they would make my issue a "high priority" and that they cannot transfer calls to the actual clinic that I want to speak with. These calls were made early in June. I have also physically gone to the clinic on Grand Ave and was told the first time that the prior auth was sent and I would have my medication that same day. That did not happen. I have gone to the clinic two more times and each time was told they would pass my message on with "high priority" but nothing has come from that. I have sent numerous messages on my patient portal and received a message saying it would take at least three to four days for someone to get back to me. It took six days and when someone did get back to me it was an RN named Ashley who only stated that they received the prior authorization and that they would get to it as soon as possible. I then contacted a patient advocate who emailed me to say he empathized with my situation and would pass my message along to the leadership team at the Grand Ave clinic. It is now July 1st 2025. I have gone without my diabetic medication since June 9th. As of today, i still have not gotten my medication nor a resolution to this issue. The patient care and respect I have received have been nil. Since Aspirus has taken over St. Lukes, the care has not been the same, the communication is useless or non existent and it leaves patients with no where or no one to turn to help them get their health needs taken care of. I am not a medical expert, but do know that if i do not take my diabetic medication, I cannot maintain my health and wellness to the degree that it needs to be in order to have safe blood sugar and A1C. This is the worst patient care I have ever experienced and in the whole scheme of things, my issue is not even that huge. I have concerns about other people who have much bigger issues who are going without communication, getting what they need. Patient care is definitely not a priority at Aspirus. Dawn H. They put me in a chair to ultrasound we dripped pus to have a path back. After 2 days of dripping pus in the room. They thought it would be a great idea to give me a fresh roommate from surgery. "The Patient above all else" has been the slogan for several years and that was the way I have always been treated until joining with Aspirus. Let me give you my background. I am an RN. I worked as a Case Manager for CareNorth for the St Luke's physician's and hospital. I have been a patient since the mid 90's. I am an advocate for using the portal for communication, but recently found portal is not available. When I tried logging into the new one with Aspirus, the system didn't recognize me as a patient. I guess that 30 some relationship meant nothing. I tried calling into Aspirus to establish the portal for 2 days!!!!!!!!!!! 45 minutes each day listening to being thanked for my patience. I finally got a new user name only to find out I need another code to actually get in. So I did the "unthinkable next step" I called my clinic (for two days) I hung up after listening to the phone ring for 20 minutes with no answer. The next day I tried again, finally getting someone to answer only to be told I couldn't speak to my doctor's assistant. I was asked WHY I needed to talk to my doctor. A gave a brief answer to this NON medical person but was deluged with questions. The the phone person hung up. That was a week ago. I have received no communication from my doctor's office yet. Well my beloved hospital, I am INDEED OUT OF PATIENCE. I have an app't in May which if things don't change, I will be shopping down the street! You've gotten in the wrong bed with Aspirus. read more

When I moved to Duluth, it was simply "St. Luke's" and not great, not horrible, I gave it 3 Stars in a previous review. Since the "Aspirus" Corporation took it over and rebranded everything it is terrible, and openly a rip-off. When I lived in Northern California in 2018 I had surgery for a hernia on one side and paid out of pocket $2,200. I had the same surgery on the other side in 2024, and Aspirus billed me well OVER $9,000, placing me as a retiree under substantial medical debt. This is over 400% Price Inflation in 6 years. Additionally it is very hard to communicate with my MD when situations come up. (The first one I had was terrible, didn't listen and not very smart; I have a much better one now.) They had a "Patient Portal" which I would get signed out of from time to time, then they promised weeks ago to replace it with a "new, better" version . . . It's not here many weeks later. When I had to renew 2 old prescriptions recently (the same ones I've had for 4 years), I only had one and they had added Ibuprofin which I was given after my surgery and did not need. The other one was gone, I had to request thru an operator that it be resumed, but it may take several days for them to communicate with my Dr. at best. They don't care, the sign over one facility that says "The Patient First, Before Everything!" should read Profit$ First, Before Everything. They are a criminal enterprise on a level with United Health Care. If you live in Minnesota avoid anything branded "Aspirus" or you will regret it. read more

Very poor employee culture and management staff. I had Covid and I was terminated even after asking my manager (who did not return phone calls/emails) This facility is outdated and poorly designed. There is no shortage of nursing staff, but there IS a shortage of qualified management who run the departments. If I had to go to the urgent care or ER, I would drive to Minneapolis! I have found that the nurses, doctors and staff at St. Luke's to be not only extremely compassionate and treat me as a person, but also have a really extensive knowledge base with regards to my health concerns, AND further, if they don't know how to address whatever is happening, they will take the time to find out, this alone tells me that they are committed to the patient, they truly do exemplify the mission statement of: "The patient above all else"! I have experienced nothing but courteous, professional care from them as well as they not only listen to my concerns, but actually hear me and take the time to explain whatever it is I do not understand. Having some rare diseases, I find that they have been able to address whatever needs I may have that needs addressing at the time. They also take the time to keep up with the various new treatments that are available so that may be able to utilize them with their patients. In addition to addressing my physical needs, they have also been so very kind listening to my emotional concerns and addressing them as well. I would, and have, recommend this health care center to anyone who is looking for the human touch along with the knowledge base. read more

We were on a mini family vacation, and my 1-year-old daughter fell off our hotel bed. She wasn't using her arm like she normally does, so we took her to the nearest hospital: St. Luke's it was! We thought we would be in Urgent Care since we got there just before 8pm (when it closed), but we were still admitted into the Emergency Room (maybe this is normal though). It didn't matter to us where she was admitted, as long as we could get good care for her. While it was the usual long wait in the ER waiting room, it didn't seem as long since we were pulled back twice for different reasons. First we were pulled to a little side room to give a nurse the low-down on what happened and what we thought was wrong with our daughter, then sent back to sit. And shortly after we were called back to another room to have our insurance information, and contact/ billing information taken, then sent back to wait to get called back to a room. We did wait a while sitting in the ER room for the doctor to arrive (apparently he had just gotten there). Then waited a little while for the x-ray tech to come get us, but it didn't seem like it was too long that we had to wait for the doctor to come back and tell us nothing was broke. My daughter wasn't thrilled with the doctor (she's learned "stranger danger" though), but didn't seem to mind waving to some of the nurses as she wandered around the nurses' station. (I'm glad they didn't make us stay in our room, she was much happier being able to wander.) If we had another emergency while visiting Duluth, I would go back to St. Luke's! read more

I had open heart surgery at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, MN, with Dr. Mary Boylan. I spent 6 days in the hospital, 4 of them in ICU. I had the best care a person could ask for, I was treated like family. I went home for 5 days and ended up back in the hospital for 16 days most of it spent in ICU. Again myself and my family members were treated with the greatest care. The food was also very good when I was able to eat it. I would recommend St. Luke's for your health care needs. Everybody that I had interaction with was awesome. read more

I visited your EMOR on December 28. I arrived there at 3:15 pm. Was told a 6 hour wait. I sat there for 9 1/2hours. I am 91 years old. They did eeg. Xray lungs, urine test lab work over the course of the 9 hours. No one could tell me how long it would Take or what was being done. Nurses did apologize foe long wait. I amwell aware of nurse shortage. One nurse did try to get things moving. People all around me were unhappy. It seems to me the least that could be done would to keep a patient informed on what was going on. NO one talked to me except to take me to test. ​​it was a too long sit without someone showing concern. By midnight I was ready to just leave. In the end I finally was seen by Dr. WYATT. HE WAS THE BRIGHT SPOT IN THE WHOLE VISIT. HE WAS KIND, CONSIDERATE AND I REALLY LIKE HOW HE TREATED ME. MY SON WAS IMPRESSED WITH HIM TOO. SO A HAPPY ENDING TO A MISERABLE 10 HOURS. I sure don't want to have to go to EMOR in the near future, at least, I hope I don't have to go. Wait is just too long. Sorry for my being blunt. Seems could be more compassion for people just waiting. read more

I would like to commend all of the staff at St. Luke's. They took excellent care of my husband after he had a heart attack while hunting and comforted him while I made the trip from Dallas to Duluth. Tara, Heather and Anne were all caring and compassionate nurses, they were quite amazing actually. I would love to see these extraordinary ladies get the recognition they deserve. The standard of care from everyone at St. Luke's was exceptional and I would like to thank everyone who took care of my husband. I have had St Luke's providers for over 20 years and have needed the hospital several times following surgeries. I live within 2 miles of the facility so when I needed Urgent Care I went to St Luke's. When the new ER was built UC was discontinued forcing patients to seek care in the ER, a more costly alternative in most insurance plans. ER is inappropriate for many health issues and clogs up the system with too many users. For example on a Sunday afternoon I needed a urinalysis which could have been done at UC vs the ER. I didn't want to pay the higher co-pay so I went to Essentia Health nearby. For persons living downtown that don't have transportation to the clinics 5-10 miles away they are out of luck. This does not sound like "The Patient Above All Else" as the Hospital portends to be. Beware if you need Urgent Care and live downtown. Pay up or find a ride to Denfeld, Lakeside or Hermantown. read more

I went to Urgent Care last night for very severe tooth pain. Every staff member I talked to was kind and listened to all my concerns. The worst part was waiting to be seen, but they have a pretty nice waiting room. They close at 8pm however since I checked in before 8 I was only charged for Urgent Care but seen in the ER. The doctor identified my fractured tooth and immediately gave me a dental block, which wiped out all the pain I was experiencing. I'm grateful for all of their help. read more

You know how hospitals are just so...hospital-ly. I have to say with St. Luke's, they have really tried, and succeeded, in making their entire facility more friendly and less scary for those that carry medical-place phobias. I've had my baby there, and I've had diagnostic and ER services there. While there still might be flaws in the service with some areas, as a whole, this hospital is really really nice. I feel like the staff care about you, the setting is clean, and you receive very good treatment. So relax. If you are having to go to the hospital for something, pick St. Luke's. I went to the urgent care clinic and the staff were nice enough and the care was adequate but a few weeks later when I received my bill it came back I saw it was sent to my insurance as an emergency room visit. When I called to get help people sort of shrugged and said too bad. My family has used services at St. Luke's for years. The staff is competent and professional. If I had one complaint, it would be that they could use a little more staff. Communication has been good, requests have been considered. When my father passed away there in his 90's, they were comassionate and available. We also used the services of a Hospice nurse, who spent the time needed to review medications, examine him, and discuss everything we needed to know. I would recommend St. Luke's to anyone. read more

My sister had her gall bladder removed 3 years ago. She has been in worse pain than before it was removed. Finally (3 years later) my sister asked for pain medication. Because my sister had the audacity to request a pain medication that actually works (she had her back go out a year earlier, and her former doctor knew of a medication), Dr. Gratia Pitcher labelled her a "med seeker", and has refused to give her any pain medication. My sister is in so much pain she has had to stop going to school. She can only lie on her back without moving to ease the pain. My sister waited for 2 1/2 hours to talk with this "doctor". After talking down at length to my sister while she was in extreme pain, this "doctor" casually mentioned she's got another serious condition...without a word about what can be done. My sister walked home in the freezing rain with no pain medication. My sister could very well get even more sick from being so cold. Are there any lawyers out there who can help us? read more

My sister is a Physical Therapist here, so I'd like to assume that this is one of the better hospitals in Duluth! I've also had my tonsils pulled here, and let me tell you... I have never had anything pulled out of my mouth that was better than this experience! For real though, I've spent so much time in my life at this hospital, I've had so many ear issues, my father had his hips replaced here. Honestly, as a family, we've never really opted for a different hospital. Now I come from a very small town located on Lake Superior, about 45 minutes east of Duluth, so this is really one of our only options for health care and hospitals. We've always been pleased, never had issues with them, and when I got my tonsils out, it really was a pleasant experience. Not to mention that I NEED them out ASAP, so when it happened, my life was instantly better. But I do remember my doctor and nurses being very supportive, and having a good time, and poking fun at my situation with me. It's nice when you can get along with your doctor.. I would recommend this hospital to anyone..way over St. Mary's! (he he) read more

I just had a mammogram and was not impressed with the technician, she seemed to roll her eyes when I did not stand the way she wanted right away, was not very friendly. I feel very vulnerable when I have a mammogram and maybe a little nervous, I would prefer someone who made me feel more comfortable. read more

During an inpatient visit, the nurses and most doctors were very polite. One doctor seemed rude and entitled to say anything that came into his head. I understood him to say he only had to see people like us on weekends when the VA hospital was closed. My family complained to the patient advocate. A doctor called us back to say that the consultant didn't work for the hospital - he just had privileges to visit problems. read more
