Father Christie and Father Justin are great orators who truly bring the word of Christ to the community. Love attending the 8 AM weekday and Saturday mass for a quick spiritual session, which usually lasts around 30 minutes. The church architecture is awe inspiring as well, with gorgeous stained glass. Take a look directly across from the altar to the back of the church, where the choir sings and where the organ is. There is a stunning, circular stained glass design. Affiliated with the church is a Catholic school, and my neighbor's children attend. They have been going to the school for multiple years and have had a good experience. The kiddos look so cute in their school uniform uniforms as well.

There's a huge jumbo Tron TV that actually tells you about their activities in church but it looks more like commercials, there were security guards fine men in black suits with white coil communicators in their ear like their guarding the president unfortunate as that would be now. The pastor is not approachable, I tried to approach him with help for rent and people surrounded me like I was going to attack him, even God was more approachable. He is a celebrity not a pastor. I told the woman I wanted to speak to him in private because I was embarrassed and she said, "how can I help you" we wouldn't want anybody to accuse him of assault. I was even more embarrassed and highly offended. Another church experience that turns me away, I rather serve God in private. Just do right by people. Tyrell Hicks was there that day. I loved the Bronx Tale. Anyway I wish no ill will. I just missed the good old days and the good old churches.

Dr. Powell is charismatic, funny, spiritual but relatable, and he often shares his pulpit with equally qualified disciples of Christ. On any given Sunday, you're sure to be blessed by his message or a surprise visit/performance by a number of gospel greats or new school talent. It's been a blessing to attend Agape these past several years. Looking forward to many more years of blessings. FYI: The congregation is young and forward thinking. The services are held at 9 am and 11 am and last about two hours. Can't make it there in person? Don't worry. Each service is streamed online.

I fell in love with the church immediately because it reminded me of my childhood. It's a traditional church with traditional hymns. The people were somewhat reserved but I expect that initially. The church, though big, made me feel at home right away. They had a beautiful choir singing away. They had children everywhere. Towards the end of mass, the priest announced that even though mass attendance was dwindling in most churches across the country, Our Lady of Peace was actually increasing it's number of attendees! How awesome is that?! I definitely think we are in the right place and that we will love it here. You can't find old traditions in many places.

This was the parish of most of my youth, especially my teenage years. There were and still are…read moremany fond memories here and some sad ones too as I recall the many wonderful people, friends, priests and sisters that I knew and that contributed in an important, positive way in forming my values, ethics, and Christian spirituality. I owe them more than I can ever repay. They taught me how to live and the importance of how to love as Christ meant us to love. Today the demographics of the parish are different as is wont to occur with the normal passage of time. But the church is still majestic and a true sanctuary of peace. While the surrounding neighborhood has become much more violent, "urban" and uncomfortable, St Mary's of the Lake still sits like a beckoning oasis of peace in the midst of chaos. Build in the late 1880s, the architecture is impressive with alcoves, stained glass windows, hand carved stations of the cross, and statues and art from antiquity. While the marble altar rails are now gone, they were there when I attended Mass there as late as 1997. The most inspiring aspect of the interior is the rich marble work of the tabernacle and high altar, and the beautiful fresco of our Blessed Mother, Mary Mother of God, being assumed into heaven, with the skies opening up to receive her! This fresco is so beautiful, it must be seen to be fully appreciated. In the late 1990s there grew a blossoming Polish population so now there are a couple of weekend Masses in Polish in addition to English. These wonderful folk brought with them a beautiful reproduction of Our Lady of Chestakowa also known as the "black Madonna" due to the original work being damaged over the past 1000 years due to fires, invasions, wars, etc... This is certainly one of the oldest churches in Ocean County, and definitely worth a visit. May you find peace and comfort here as I did during my turbulent growing years. My children went to OLHC school and received their sacrements there. In later years we had my parents funerals in the new church. Our family moved to NJ but when my husband passed I took him back to Tottenville.....OLHC was our roots. I was so sad to see the school close its doors.Our youth need a Christian education. Sr. James, Sr. Catherine, Sr. Margaret Mary, Sr. Athanasius.....I am sure they all have a tear in their eyes :0(

a small beautiful church in the tottenville section of staten island. i was in the area visiting…read moredear friends on easter sunday and needed to take a walk after eating too much pasta and cannolis. it's a lovely roman catholic house of worship that serves its people wonderfully , especially the spanish speaking catholics . a small parking lot and the main rectory is left of the main church, before i walked in i was really moved by and outdoor statue of jesus christ with a plaque blessing the victims of 9 11. the church inside is simple with stain glass windows and more statues of religious figures . some wooden rows of seating . even though service for the day was finished i still had a good feeling being inside the house of god.

The weddings I've been to have been joyous. The outside steps of the church are perfect for taking pictures. History of the church (taken from their website): Ground was broken for the church on May 26, 1941, with the first Mass in the new building offered on Christmas Eve, 1942. On June 25, 1943, Father Thomas Carney was transferred from St. Anthony's parish in Trenton and became St. Lawrence's first resident pastor (Fr. Carney was also responsible for the construction of the rectory in 1947). The parish was canonically erected (created) by Bp. Griffin on November 13, 1943. Father Walter Slattery, Father Melvin Stanczewski, Father Vincent Nebus, Father Julius Licatta, Father Raymond Attanasio, Father Joseph Szulwach, and (currently) Father Jonathan Toborowsky succeeded him in subsequent years.
