Halifax has its charms, but finding food with bold flavour and spice can be a challenge. That's why discovering Aster Café felt like such a win. We've had Ethiopian food on our list for ages back in Toronto, but somehow never got around to it. Here, it finally happened--and it hit the spot. Hidden gem in Halifax! I rarely write reviews, but my experience at Aster Cafe was so outstanding that I felt compelled to share. I was visiting Halifax recently, and it was such a pleasant surprise to fine this cozy Ethiopian restaurant! I grew up eating at Ethiopian restaurants in California and came in with high expectations. Aster Cafe did not disappoint. I got the veggie plate, which had a delicious mix of lentils, potatoes, chickpeas, and greens on top of soft, tangy injera. Super flavorful and very satisfying, especially for a vegetarian like me. Others at my table had the beef tibs and loved them too. We all got the mango limeade--highly recommend! The service was warm and attentive, and the server helped us figure out the best way to share both veg and meat options. The chef came out after the meal to check in, which made the experience even more special. Great food, great people, great atmosphere. Definitely one of the best meals I've had in a long time. We have been craving authentic Ethiopian cuisine since we moved to Halifax in 2018, and this place did not disappoint! The restaurant itself is cozy and welcoming with friendly staff and can't beat prices. The menu is small but mighty. I find it hard to choose something good when presented with too many options so this place was perfect. Since we are creatures of habit, we ordered the Beyeayent which is different stewed meat and vegetable dishes served on a platter of enjera (flat bread) that you eat with your hands. There are vegetarian and vegan options as well as authentic Ethiopian roasted coffee. Do yourself a favour and check this place out, we will definitely be back. read more

I'm fairly new to Halifax, coming from Oakland, California. I've been missing Ethiopian cuisine with a fierceness. Discovering Aster Cafe was delightful. The injera has a pleasing softness & tartness, the lamb tibs spiced to perfection, the lentil wot had a lively fire. Ethiopian coffee finished everything off perfectly. I'll be back. read more

Breakfast is delicious, reasonably priced and CLEAN! You won't find any nasty black crust on your eggs or the entire plate for that matter. The Mediterranean breakfast is HUGE for $13 and it's your best bet. All other breakfast items are quite reasonably priced and delicious. Coffee is $3 but is bottomless and the service is efficient and friendly. If you're coming for lunch, lots of awesome store options, but again, be prepared to wait or take your order to go.
