Lamb and chicken kebabs, rice, salad and hummus.
    Murray W.

Located on Dresden, Mashawee is one of several places in that area focused on the downtown lunch crowd. However, given where I work and live, I'm not often in the area at that time of day. This day, however, I was off and running some errands downtown so I thought I'd tick Mashawee of my list of places to try out. It's a small location, with seating for just over 20 inside, with a few more tables out on the patio. It's pretty bare bones inside, which is understandable as they're there to crank out lunches for office workers, not provide a fancy sit down dinner. It's basically a diner/cafeteria design, with an open kitchen and display case that run the length of the restaurant. The menu board had some interesting Middle Eastern options beyond the typical Lebanese fare that we're used to in here Halifax. This included mansaf - lentils cooked in a sauce of fermented dried yogurt, bamya - an okra dish, and kebsa - a meat and rice dish. I wanted to try a couple types of meat so I went with their mixed kebab plate, choosing chicken and lamb. I sat down while they cooked the meat, having my run of the place as it was empty in the post lunch-lull. Once the kebabs were ready, I went up to the counter and they asked what type of rice I wanted, I went with their self-described yellow rice. The salad looked just like coleslaw, and it came with a big dollop of hummus as well. The rice was a vivid yellow, although it didn't taste particularly saffron-y, if that's what it was coloured and flavoured with. Nonetheless, it was cooked nicely and was very plentiful, so being the lover of rice that I am, it was a-ok in my book. Each skewer of meat had four decent-sized hunks on it and were nicely browned and moist. Even the lamb was tender, although I wished it would have had more of a Mediterranean/Middle Eastern seasoning. The salad/coleslaw was shredded cabbage and carrot; it was crunchy but nothing special. I paid at the counter when I was done, and it was $15 for my plate and water, pretty reasonable for the size of what I got. I don't know if I would make Mashawee a destination lunch again, but it's good to know that it's there as an option for a quick lunch and a pile o' rice.

Yummmmm!!! They have really good deals -$5 for a wrap! Who can beat that? I ended up getting the shish tawook plate because I was extra hungry haha. Substituted the rice for more salad and was completely satisfied. Definitely would eat here again. Workers are also very friendly

Another great find- awesome food, cheap price. I've had a lot of shawarmas over the years- YHZ, YUL, YOW, YYZ, YYC, YVR, even in NewYork, Los Angeles and Barbados. The quality here is second only to Kababji in Dartmouth, but this is a take-out restaurant vs. a dining venue. That's about it, really- surroundings are a bit shabby, but if you're looking for a high quality/price ratio- you won't beat this family-run place. Very nice family, I might add.

Great portion for your price! I paid 5$ for a huge chicken shawarma wrap with all the fixings. The pita is so thin and it makes it so easy to eat - while somehow not breaking. The shawarma itself was alright - nothing spectacular. The shawarma was a little fatty and the sauce kind of tasted like chicken stock. There were a ton a flavours but in my opinion that many flavours aren't needed. The pita was a little stained - from what I'm assuming was in part due to the chicken stock so a bright yellow stain was present. It wasn't terrible but definitely wouldn't go out of my way to find parking and go here when there is so many more competitive shawarma places in Halifax. The reason I gave so many stars is that the atmosphere was a great family-oriented feel. They were so kind and welcoming and welcomed you when you came in and thanked you bunches when you left. It's a very clean spot. Also, it took about 4 minutes from start to pay.

Their chicken shawarmas are delicious and cheap, but I saw some very disturbing food handling practices and will not be back.

It's good. Cheap. And really nice people. The food is fine but nothing outstanding. Though for $5, you can't really complain much!

It's larger than it was first time I visited, but still in the little strip mall off Chain Lake Drive. There are two rooms either side of the entrance, both cool, subtly lit and cozy. It was just after they opened on a summer's Thursday morning, so I was the first customer and quickly ordered the meat thali. This comes in six segments. Two meat curries which change from time to time (today it was beef and chicken). A very nice dahl, a good portion of rice, chickpea salad and a quartered plain naan. All very tasty and overall quite a sizeable portion. I was on the ravenous side of peckish when I arrived and left thoroughly stuffed, so you definitely get your value for the $23 with tip. It's not licensed, but has a nice line in cold drinks should you so desire. It's no surprise this place is consistently voted No.1 curry house in Halifax, though it has a lot more competition than it did when it first opened. Thoroughly recommended.

Anyway, the pakoras were ok. Butter chicken was very oily. Yes, oily, not butter oil, just oily. (Look at the picture). The best part of the meal is the rice. But even that's not good. It has a nice color to it though. Food is pretty mediocre. I'd come back for a quick takeout but i'd go to other places if I actually want a real, good indian food.

Food was delivered by Door Dash so take the delivery with a grain of salt. The food arrived and was a good portion for the two of us to eat. Chicken korma had a really nice flavour. Sauce was nice and thick, chicken pieces were very large. Butter chicken was good, not great. Didn't find it had as much flavour as others we've tried, but for some it may be perfectly fine. Our mistake was not realizing that these two dishes didn't have anything other than the chicken in them - so make sure you read the descriptions if you want to ensure that you get veggies. Last thing, which is more probably an issue with Door Dash, is that we didn't get any utensils with the food - but we made do in the hotel. Overall will try again another time we are in town and choose some of their other many options.

The paneer tikka taste wise was good, however the food color in paneer could have been avoided, there were five chunks of paneer, good size but no capsicum or onion just one of each for five pieces of paneer. No green chutney just a small tiny yogurt dip, again the taste was good but the experience could be improved by adding few more onions and capsicum on the skewer and chutney. Matar paneer was good too, amritsari kulcha was huge bigger than the plate itself, was tasty too. We had it at room temperature after an hour when it was packed so May be that's why it turned a bit chewy but otherwise taste was nice

I've checked a few of these places off my "To Eat At" list, and when looking for some easy takeout after a long day, I took the opportunity to strike another name through. Tanoor is an interesting mix of Syrian and Yemeni cuisine, reminding me of the many East Asian restaurants that put multiple countries' food on their menu to expand their business' appeal. Shawarma features prominently, with both chicken and beef, as well as different regional variations including the Canadian-ized version with more vegetables, and the more traditional version of just meat, garlic sauce and pickles. On the Yemeni side of the menu, one of the country's most famous dishes is the star - mandi. Traditionally, this would be prepared by cooking the meat above a pot of rice in a tandoor/tannur/tanoor, and since it forms the basis of Tanoor's name, I'm going to assume that's how they do it here as well. For our order, I went with a whole chicken mandi, which includes rice and zahawig hot sauce, and I tacked on an order of tabbouli to add some green to the meal. It was ready for pickup in quick order, just 15 minutes later. The mandi was an impressive sight as takeout, although I'm sure it's even better when plated for dine-in. A red-hued, spatchcocked chicken lay atop a huge mound of warmly-coloured rice, which had seen some saffron and other seasonings itself. The container is one of those large rectangular aluminum trays you see at pot lucks and the like, so this was a LOT of rice. After serving up the plates, we eagerly dug in. The chicken skin lost its crispness while wrapped for takeout, but it and the meat had a warm, earthy flavour profile not dissimilar from Indian tandoori chicken that we're more familiar with. The ultra-tender (and admittedly a bit overcooked) meat fell off the bones. The rice had its own complementary flavours from the saffron and the cardamom seeds that dotted the dish, while the tangy zahawig brought contrast and a hint of spiciness to our meal. I found Tanoor's tabbouli to be more lemon-forward than most that I've had, with a layer of sweetness to balance out the acidity of the lemon juice. Not a wild departure from a well-known dish, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I may not be out in the Bedford area very often, but Tanoor and many of its neighbours have added a lot to the area's food scene that would have been hard to imagine not that long ago.
