I don't go here regularly but I've dropped by to roll quite a few times since 2006…read more It's exactly what I would expect from a bjj gym in Nola. It's like a pop-up in the back of a gym. There are exposed brick walls and some other characteristics you expect to find in these old buildings. It's next to a bar. The students are all friendly and many of them are interesting characters with crazy patches or mismatched neon color rash guards. One guy had a patch on his gi of Johnny Cash flipping the bird, which is the best possible patch if you ask me. I'm surprised there isn't a bar in the back of the gym or a brass band playing while we spar. Professor Matthias is an excellent teacher. I'd also imagine he'd be a great coach ringside as he is always very good at identifying opportunities for attack when we spar. He's also a really down to earth guy with some good stories. I wish I had the time to do bjj seriously again. It's frustrating to know that your skills are devolving while the bjj game keeps changing and evolving, but I guess that's just what happens when you get old. If I did have the time and inclination I would be proud to be a member here. You should check it out.

I think I've earned the right to give the first review for Cypress Fitness, as I have left quite a…read morebit of sweat there over the past four and a half months since they've opened. I had been doing kickboxing training with Brian for over a year at another gym when he told me that he and a business partner, Brandon, were opening their own gym on Tchoup. So I followed him there and have been taking TRX, Kettlebell, and various other cardio and circuit training classes pretty regularly. TRX is something that everyone in NOLA who likes to eat, but does not like being fat, should get into. It is effective for everyone from frail grannies to muscled-up ex-navy seals (who developed the system). Drew Brees endorses it (and uses it), so that alone should convince you to try it. Kettlebell training with Brandon will make you strong. Not stare-at-your-arms-in-the-mirror-while-you-do-curls strong, but real functional strength. No machines, just your body moving itself and an object in dynamic, natural movements with your core and stabilizing muscles working the whole time. I was trying to think of an adequate metaphor/simile to describe the results I've experienced from my training at Cypress, and the best I could come up with was "These abs! I look like a white D'Angelo circa 'Untitled (How does it feel).'" Is that too obscure an early '00s R&B video reference? Maybe. Suffice it to say that the trainers at Cypress Fitness will motivate you to get in great shape, in a completely judgment-free, supportive, accessible and fun environment. This is not a chain-franchise-Anytime-Riviera gym -- it is a gym run by people who care about your health, designed for people who want to achieve their better selves.

I tried this gym out when looking for a place to join. They got back to me promptly and offered to let me try out one of their classes that I was interested in. 6am spinning isn't for everyone but I love it! The instructor was very helpful and lead the small class through a really well rounded workout. I really enjoyed it and I liked that the class wasn't packed. The gym never seems to be packed either which is good because it really is only one room. They have a lot of equipment and two class rooms but thats it. There isn't a locker room just a large bathroom and a second one with a small shower. It's on the second floor above CC's so street parking can be an issue. Overall I thought this place was great but I was looking for a bit more. Had the monthly fee been cheaper I would have considered joining just for the spin classes... but its quite expensive and I just didn't think that it was the best fit for me. Good gym if you just need a place to work out and go and don't mend spending some money doing that.

I went on a Saturday morning and took the Les Mills Body Pump class and the Body Combat class. I have done Body Pump at my gym and was very comfortable with this class. The instructor did an excellent job and the class was pretty full but there was plenty of room to workout. I had never done Body Combat but I have done Kick boxing. Loved the Body Combat class. Not quite as many people but a high energy class. Salvation Studio was easy for me to get to from where we were staying right out of the French Quarter by taking the bus. It dropped me off almost right in front of the studio. Excellent workout, nice people working there.
