Tip - visit at the beginning of the off-season, which is wonderfully peaceful and quiet - I highly recommend it! There is a restaurant and bar on site, and rooms come equipped with bug spray and an umbrella for those wet, rainy days! They thought of everything! Staff is super friendly and helpful, and the chef knows what he (or she??) is doing in the kitchen (dinner was delicious)! Be sure to make reservations if you want to stay for dinner - seating is limited, and the view is gorgeous!

Booked on-line, we had no real idea of what the hotel would be like. When we pulled in late in the afternoon we got out of the car and stood with our backs to the hotel for the first few minutes. The simple reason was that we watched as the waves crashed onto the deserted beach right across from the main hotel building. It was beautiful with low late afternoon sun shining through the clouds. The hotel did not look busy when we checked in, but when we went to our room- an Eco Suite (was not sure what that was when we booked, but more later) which was across the highway, we were again blown away by the view and the level of comfort in the room. Fortunately we were just in time for high tide and took the advice of the staff member who checked us in to walk the short distance up to Pancake Rocks to catch the high tide. This we did and were not disappointed, although that is a subject for a different review. We walked back down to the hotel and had dinner at the bar. Again, the dinner was so good we were really surprised at the quality. Our appetizer of onion rings was huge, but after driving most of the day, we were hungry and made short work of the hot crunchy rings. Our main course was a delightfully spicy Cajun pasta and a beautifully cooked stuffed chicken breast. Despite being full we decided to order a cheese platter to take back to the room for our lunch on the road the following day. Again it was a very big portion with a very wide selection of cheese. There was only ourselves and another two couples for dinner so clearly the hotel is between seasons right now. We did not see many staff members during our stay, but the people we did see were so friendly and very helpful and informative. Our Eco Suite was actually made from sustainable local materials, but aside from that was spacious, clean and comfortable with wonderful views. Oh, and pedestrian access to the main building was via a handy tunnel under the road. Lighting at the resort is kept to a minimum, so as not to distract the birds flying in from the Petrel Colony nearby. This is just one example of the careful thought that went into the design and execution of the hotel. Anyone passing by should really seriously consider saying at this great hotel.

We didn't spend much time there during the day since we were out sightseeing, but I can definitely say it was nice and cosy in the evenings. Even when it was super cold and rainy we stayed toasty all night. Lolly had everything you'd need for making meals but we did our cooking in the communal kitchen as we were staying at the retreat with friends. The kitchen was clean and very well stocked with everything you need to make a nice meal. The communal bathrooms and toilets were also nice and clean. Also, I took Kate's Saturday morning yoga class and it was absolutely lovely. We didn't book our stay at Greenstone Retreat because of the yoga (our main reasons were the price and location) but Kate's yoga class is what makes me want to go back. I would love to go back for one of her yoga weekend retreats.

"Resort" is an apt term for the quiet, green surroundings and exceptionally comfortable beds. It's much quieter than a hostel, but has a good range of amenities and spot-on internet despite the rural location. There's pretty much nothing in terms of restaurants or stores near here, and in general when traveling through NZ I would advise buying food in whatever big town you arrive in, but cooking the food I brought here was a breeze. Everything was incredibly clean and well-maintained. The location makes it ideal for a stop while traveling across the country through Arthur's pass or up the coast, and it is one of few choices as the whole region is really quite rural. The host seems rather into Eastern religions and it was a take off your shoes kind of place with what looked like Nepali prayer flags out front. There was also a rather lively dog. It is a small business, and you do have to pay cash (or Paypal, but not cards), but you should be traveling with cash, and your stay here, for what it is, will not cost too much. If I could have done anything differently when visiting the area, I would have stayed another night here as it was certainly the most relaxed sleep I got.

The cabin was lovely for our stay - exactly the accommodations we needed with a kitchenette, teas and coffees, and some incredible shower water pressure. The local recommendations guidebook led us to the Glow Worm Dell and Kharun Thai, two of the highlights of our time in Hokitika. The office receptionist recommended Hokitika Gorge to us at checkout which was a highlight of our trip!

While our room didn't overlook the ocean like others, we were right behind them so the beach was just a minute walk away. There was also a glow worm area right across the street from the hotel! We went and it was amazing! I can't believe it's just there for free and every other place charges to see the glow worms. The room was hard to stay in. But you get what you pay for. The DVD system didn't work so we couldn't watch the DVD we picked out from the office. The bathroom was small with no counter space and the heater in our room wasn't working. I was also bitten by a bunch of mosquitos. I may pay a little extra next time to stay at the new beachfront hotel in town.
