Though I have experienced better hotels overall, it is definitely worth the price it is. I demoted one star due to the lack of vegetarian dishes at the downstairs restaurant, as they offered only two dishes: the flatbread (delicious, might I add) and the soup of the day, tomato and capsicum. However, they do provide gluten-free dishes, and what we ate for dinner was simply fantastic. The fish was fresh and excellently-cooked, the steak (medium-rare is what I order) could have been cooked a tiny bit better but was near-perfect combined with the fries, egg, gravy, and pepper sauce. The pasta was deliciously creamy and filling, definitely worth the price. The flatbread, pesto and Parmesan, as well as the chili and mozzarella, was divine, would definitely recommend buying a couple for the table. Excellent, highly-commended service at the restaurant and reception, very friendly and willing to help. As for the rooms, they are spacious, cleanly: not the most modern of rooms but the fantastic beds make up for it: may be the most comfortable mattress I've slept on. The bathroom was definitely a show-stopper, with a spacious shower, clean, modern, fresh feel and complimentary goodies along with the room. The coffee and tea selection was fantastic, and the milk was very appreciated. I would recommend this hotel to families: we booked twin rooms and were very impressed and pleased, to say the least.

They claim that staying here will take you back in time. It absolutely does. When you walk in, you are treated to an overwhelming amount of old antiques ranging from several decades and potentially centuries. The property is a cafe, restaurant and bar. They have everything you can think of for NZ cuisine - coffee, other drinks, pies, pastries, actual food, fish and chips, etc. There is a LOT. Every room here is in theme. You can spend hours exploring every single piece. There are pictures with the history of Otira Hotel (previously Terminus Hotel). The outdoor area is also filled with interesting architectural pieces and models. Gandalf and Gollum are just some of them. There is a farmyard which houses goats and chickens. There is a talking parrot but he refused to talk to us. The rooms are all themed Victorian. Large 4-poster beds, with dark interiors and lots of intricate designs on everything - wall papers, the washing basin, the toilet, etc. There is a common room which has a fridge, coffee and hot chocolate making supplies, dry breakfast, a TV, lots of CDs to watch movies with, books and a freaking massage chair!! We got there late and I used the massage chair and pretty much fell asleep in it...that's how good the chair was. Some bedrooms have attached bathrooms, but there is also a common area with at least 3 toilets, 2 showers and 1 clawfoot tub. You might hear trains passing by, but I slept very well. Last but not the least - a word about the owner. He is a very sweet man. We called him to let him know that we would be late to check in. He had said that everything would be kept ready for us, but he actually stayed up and waited for us! He even offered to cook us something that late at night! In the morning, he was up and about earlier than expected and very kindly offered to give us breakfast before the opening time. He gave us several recommendations about things to see. You, sir, are very kind and adorable! Thank you so much for looking after this property and us. If you plan to drive by Otira, please stop by Otira Stagecoach Hotel for a meal if you can't stay the night!

Not the best hotel room I have ever stayed in but I am keeping the rating up because we got a…read morereally good rate and the location can't be beat. While our room didn't overlook the ocean like others, we were right behind them so the beach was just a minute walk away. There was also a glow worm area right across the street from the hotel! We went and it was amazing! I can't believe it's just there for free and every other place charges to see the glow worms. The room was hard to stay in. But you get what you pay for. The DVD system didn't work so we couldn't watch the DVD we picked out from the office. The bathroom was small with no counter space and the heater in our room wasn't working. I was also bitten by a bunch of mosquitos. I may pay a little extra next time to stay at the new beachfront hotel in town.

After a day's riding all you ask is for a nice, clean place to lay your head so you can wake refreshed and ready for the following ride. A crappy, sloping tent site for $48 is bad enough, more than any other far superior sites on the South Island but ... wait for it ... Four grown men booked a pre erected tent fully expecting a 4 man tent preferably in the style of the canvas tents available. Just look at the photo to see what they provided - if it wasn't serious it would be hilarious! (actually it is quite funny because I didnt sleep there ) A $120 warehouse tent stuffed in the corner of a hay shed on the dirt!!! The boys didnt even use it and ended up sleeping on their mattresses in the dust. This is their reply: Dear Karen. Ive never treated guest disgustingly. The grounds were beautiful and the couple running the place were extremely friendly and helpful and even gave us recommendations for the next day of our trip. The bathrooms and facilities were pristine and made us feel at home. We took a short hike to see the nearby waterfall and at night ventured out to see the glow-worm dells which were fascinating! 10/10 do recommend for anyone making a trip through Arthur's Pass!
