This is another one of those really cool bars, though it does happen to be hidden out of the way so it was rather quiet. Then again I did come here on a Monday so I guess that was expected. One of my favorite bars/restaurant on James street. Such a versatile venue. It's great for after work munchies with coworkers. Or for dinner before going out. However most people come here for the great drinks to party the night away with good friends. Venue tends to be on the hipster fancy side so wear smart casual clothing. The servers are friendly. The bartender put on a small show making the strawberry bubbles and had a cheeky smile. Was good fun. Food is great and well priced. I come here on days I don't want to drink too just to have dinner. Their daily special burgers tend to be the best value. I ordered the haloumi burger and was not disappointed. Burger is 20$ with fries included. Also had mini Mac and cheese balls to share. Can't really go wrong with Mac and cheese balls. Also had the blackened chicken salad which was packed full of flavor. Too bad it was small and not as filling as burgers but that can't be helped it's a salad. The drinks are standouts. Usually try something new each time. Strawberry bubbles is a good choice for something sweet and fancy. read more

After two visit to At Sixes I still feel like there's more for me to experience. The menu is casual but with heavy Nth American tones (Poutine, anyone?) I've managed to go at times (read around 3-4pm) before it is busy. From personal experience trying to get in on a Friday night after 6pm is like trying to fit yourself into a sardine tin. Don't be disheartened, instead, take it as a sign the team behind Cru Bar have hit the nail on the head with a classy 'pub' that brings something new to James Street. The menu winners thus far for me? Hack the green salad by also ordering the smoked eggplant dip. Instead of using the bread that it comes with, take the gluten free option of using the cos lettuce leaves as your "dipping" mechanism. It's a crunchy, smoky, flavour bomb in one bite. Sitting along the astro turf with my work colleagues, sipping a glass of Pimm's from their exceptional Pimm's jug, it felt like a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the CBD. read more

So much fun on a Friday night! This was my first visit after hearing so much about it and Sixes and Sevens did not disappoint. We found a sweet spot on the astro turf outside and stayed out there the entire evening. They have short stumps to place your beers/food which is what we did with our beers/ciders and pizza. They only had one pizza type to offer (chicken) that night as they were changing up the menu. It wasn't my favorite pizza in Brisbane but the drinks, company, and ambience made up for its shortcoming. We were there to have a good time so the focus wasn't so much on the food this time around. Everyone was friendly. The staff took our order at the bar quickly and we were back out on the patio. The place was crowded but wasn't overwhelming. The weather was great as well. On a Friday night the music at this place is rocking (but not so loud you can't maintain a conversation). The average age of the clientele is probably around 40-45 and much more yuppie/dinkie than hippie. Staff is generally pretty friendly and the atmosphere is good. Review of eats and drinks: Chicken wings - Great Pizza & quesadilla - OK Croquettes - Surprise (we expected potato-y, but they were chees-y) If you're tossing it up between "margarita for 2" and the mojito jug (both in the low $30s): both are good, but the Cubans win this handily based on quantity (2-3 times as much). read more

A quaint little place on James st with yummy American food and a fully loaded bar. Unfortunately the service was a little bit slack. We ordered our food at the bar and that was quick, however when o went up to request some water I was left standing there looking like a ninny for about 5 minutes despite the place being empty and two girls on staff. The food was relatively slow coming out despite the fact that we were the only customers. Not sure if I'd go back based on the fact that it was lunch time and we had to wait for 20 minutes for fish tacos and blackened chicken salad. Oh and the chicks at the bar. read more

We came here on a Friday for a nightcap after dinner. Bottom line: go elsewhere. The service is appalling. They served us full price drinks at midnight (closing time because they aren't registered as a "safe night precinct" by state standards). That said, customers are legally allowed to drink their (full priced) drinks for 30 minutes after purchase. Obvious, one might assume? In contrast, we were bullied out of here within ten minutes. This is not only illegal behavior, but beyond inhospitable. read more

Do you know what freedom is? Freedom is being on a conference in a city that ain't yours and clocking off early to hit a bar in the middle of the afternoon because the sun just came out. Freedom is also nuding up and wearing an adult diaper down the main street because your mother didn't love you enough. But more on that later. At Sixes And Sevens has this stellar little party grass out the front, an astroturf street-front with little log stools and an astroturf bench and it's like someone just popped a can of summer and spilled it right there and lounging - nay, sprawling - out there with the week over and all the hard stuff out of the way and just drinking ahead of you and plates and plates of beef short ribs swimming in thick gravy and quesadillas with cheesy edges and some kind of miracle dip with ciabatta toast and jugs of Pimms and lemonade and mint and oh no my shorts fell off and look everyone I'm wearing Speedos and hey where is everyone going come back I need to finish my story about the guy in the nappy . . . read more

It's hard to not love a place where you can sit outside, astro turf between your toes, scarfing down deliciuous share plates and drinking in the sunshine. I was impressed with the selection of wine and that it could be purchased in half and full bottles. Jugs of Pimms cup and other cocktails were reasonably priced, as was the Napoleon Cider. Mad props to this place for NOT getting sucked in to offering all mainstream brands. The food selection was great and between a group of nine of us we sampled a fair chunk of the menu. My favourites: a great fresh green salad, mac & cheese and the Poutine which was one of the best I've had in Australia. I mean, really, how can you go wrong with drowning chunky chips in gravy and then adding cheese curds on top? That stuff MAY clog your arteries and eventually kill you, but gosh what a wonderfully decadent and delicious way to go... read more

I just can't get enough of this pub. The varied seating settings, the astroturf, the "classics of North America" menu, the rustic hunting lodge decor, the shared plates that actually feed more than one person - it's like they've tapped into the brains of their target demographic and provided us with a perfectly positioned pub. I accept. You'll all judge me for this, but of everything I've tried (chicken wings, beef short ribs, quesadilla, eggplant, white bean and feta dip, gruyere mac 'n' cheese) the green salad with avo, cos and pistachio is the easy victor in my book. I mentally bookmarked At Sixes and Sevens when it caught my eye as I drove down James Street recently. It looked fresh and interesting from the outside, and a quick Google search revealed it could be a nice little local pub. So a Tuesday lunch with a friend provided the perfect opportunity to check out At Sixes and Sevens. The best thing about this place is the space itself. A couple of different seated areas give it interest and I really liked the ambiance - dark rustic wood, charcoal interior paint and big windows to let the lovely light in. The outside beer garden-type space also looks like a great place to chill on a Sunday arvo. The best way to describe the food is fancy pub grub - fish fingers were coated in a pinenut and herb crumb, sausage rolls were done with pork and fennel seeds, potato bake was made with baby chats and a parmesan cream; you get the idea. We shared one of the fancy toasties, a serve of the fish fingers and some rustic chips - it was all quite tasty. Decent variety of beer and cider on tap and by the bottle, four or so different cocktail pitchers and five or so bottles each of red and white wine - basically enough behind the bar to keep you out of trouble. Service was friendly, though a bit vague- I guess that probably just comes with being a new place. I drove past on my way back from dinner that same night and saw it was absolutely pumping - a pretty good sign for a Tuesday night. Wow, went to At Sixes and Sevens for lunch today and loved it!! Had never been before (I know, unbelievable) so didn't really know what to expect (apart from it being funky). Well funky it was, and many other things to boot. The interior was very groovy. The service was prompt and friendly. The house Sav Blanc was really delicious. And the share plates were to die for. We ordered 4 between 2 of us and it was plenty of food. We got the spicy chicken wings with chipotle sauce, the haloumi salad, the meatballs, and the croquets. Yum yum and double yum!! All 4 plates came to just over $30, so it's extremely reasonably priced. If you want the place pretty much to yourselves, follow our lead and go for lunch on a Tuesday. Enjoy :) read more

Food: Nicer than your standard pub food but not by a large amount. It's all tasty enough but nothing special. Drinks: Standard pub drinks. Beer on tap and bottled. Wines and liquor. Service: Hit and miss. Some are really on the ball and friendly but some are a little spacey. Price: Slightly more than you'd expect for a pub but not by much. Venue: Indoor benches, tables and a bar. Outdoor tiered astroturfed area with low seats and high benches. Probably the best thing about this place. Bookings: Uncertain but it gets very busy on peak nights and on Saturday/Sunday during the day as there really aren't many other options on James St for this kind of thing. Other: A fancier pub option on James Street than the QA Hotel but with that comes with your typical James St types. Open late which is great. How does a self proclaimed Gastro Pub offer one gluten free menu item? ONE. Out of 2 A4 pages worth of choices?? We sat down here to sample the food and have a few drinks. Two out of three of us were gluten intolerant. After ordering a pitcher of the Sixes House Punch to share we asked the bartender what we could eat on the menu. He assured me he would get back to me. Cut to twenty minutes later as we are reaching the end of our pitcher, and we go up again to ask the same question. We were pointed toward the kitchen in the back to field the question. This definitely wasn't looking good. The chef advised there was one meal we could safely order, the blackened chicken. Us two glutards took one look at each other and left. This was a shame for the one person in our group who could eat anything, but honestly the offering was so meagre we didn't really see the point. My message here is simple - cater for food allergies, particularly common ones - and you will grow your legion of fans. I actually wanted to spend time and money there. The decor and drinks were both fabulous and we were hungry! ALAS we ventured elsewhere for our lunch that day. read more

Good drinks selection with both beers and wines on tap plus some creative cocktails. My first visit here was a solo one as I was on a poutine mission. I never expect much from Australian poutine, so I won't hold Sixes & Sevens' attempt against them. The chips were too thin (shoestring), the gravy and cheese too sparse, and I would have liked more seasoning. Thankfully, I knew better than to judge an entire menu on the poutine, so I returned with a friend for a Sunday Session where we managed to eat our way through the blackened chicken, the margarita pizza, the deep fried prawn skewers, and even the hummus. So happy I gave this place another chance. Loved everything about the hummus, the prawns, and especially the blackened chicken. The pizza flavour was spot on with the fresh herbs shining through. I like my crust a bit thinner and crunchier, but my friend loved it the way it was. read more

This place had the most bomb ass food. We decided to stop by twice on our trip to Brisbane, it was that good! The Mac and cheese bites are amazing. The pulled pork sandwich is to die for. The gravy!! It's a cool atmosphere as well, a bunch of tables and some Astro turf to sit on. Good music. Seems like a place like people stop by after work and grab a beer My only complaint? No takeaway. Apparently you have to have a license. So when we had leftovers, the waitress told us that we could use napkins and wrap it up ourselves. Which wasn't ideal. read more

Ok, review catch up time. Visited 6s &7s a couple of weeks ago prior to a show. Didn't eat there but as far as bars go you'll have no complaints if you stop in here. Nice fit out and lots of different nooks and crannies to sit yourself down at. It was a busy Friday night but we were served at the bar reasonably quickly and drink prices are about right. Excelente! Coming to @ 6's and 7's was a great experience! We went for lunch and it was a bit quiet because we were on the tail end of lunchtime. However, friendly staff greeted us and shared her honest feedback about menu items and beers. The menu was interesting and turned out to be quite good in terms of what we ordered. We chose the halloumi sandwich and a schnitzel sandwich. Both were excellent (and high quaility/well-made) as well as the brews we had along with our sandwiches. This is definitely a spot I would want to return to upon visiting Brisbane and would definitely want to come here at nite during busier, more "up-tempo" hours... read more
