My middle daughter and I started this journey over 4 years ago as we were looking for an activity that was "her thing". She was 8 at the time. Since then we have continued to progress through the belt ranks together. making this "our thing". During that time, my wife and two other younger children have started, and they all love it. I have had the great pleasure of seeing my kids and wife mature in the martial arts discipline as their confidence levels grow. At a Program Level: The program is very well organized with each rank requirement clearly defined. The school facilities and equipment represent a significant investment and is very well done. The instructors are knowledgeable and patient (important). They clearly understand the mechanics behind the technique and have a positive encouraging way of teaching. Tiny Tigers: The Tiny Tigers program is focused on ages up to approximately 6 and provides a foundation for entry into the Family Class. It is fun and engaging. Our younger children really enjoy karate night. Family Class: This is a non-intimidating atmosphere with a wide spectrum of participant capabilities. Ages range from 65ish to 8. In addition to learning various martial arts techniques, the class provides an incentive for improving your physical aptitude. I personally can attest that my cardio and strength have significantly improved.

The staff customize your program to fit your body's needs as well as your capabilities. I've studied martial arts for most of my life, and this is the best school I have encountered. Kung fu, udo, Kong su (similar to karate or tae kwon doe), samurai sword, 18 chinese weapons, aikido, tai chi and bagua. This gives students really balanced development and ultimately allows you to create a personal practice that is beautifully tailored to your individual needs. At Oom Yung Doe movement is a tool to win over whatever challenges you have in life, whether you want to overcome depression or serious health challenges. It is serious, authentic, traditional martial arts and the benefits are undeniable. I train primarily at an Oom Yung Doe location in Massachusetts but took some classes at this school while I was in the area. Instructors are excellent and knowledgeable, the students are fun and laid back and feel like a family, and the practice space is great. Head Instructor Patrick taught most of my classes in Boston when I started my training-- he was incredibly knowledgeable about how to work with my chronic illness and over a few months of working with him I was almost symptom free. The Pittsburgh school is extremely lucky to have him. In my two years at Oom Yung Doe I went from fainting 20 times a day and not being able to work for 9 years to being in better shape than I was as a high school athlete-- and that is just scratching the surface of the positive change I've felt. I've watched my fellow students get their weight under control, quit smoking, overcome depression, stop feeling suicidal, get past the need for various medications, heal long standing injuries, overcome social anxiety, the list goes on and on. The students are diverse in age (20's-60's), gender, race, religion, and background-- the unifying factor is that Oom Yung Doe is a place for people who are serious about making positive change in their lives. If you want to take control of your life and really change, grow, and overcome your mental and physical limitations, this is absolutely the place for you.

They have class as a group but do get one on one attention especially when noticed as needing more individualized help with new moves or new student. The belt promotion is based on when the staff feel they are ready to move up. New belts $60, uniforms are around $40 I believe (only need new uniforms when grow out). My son is 8 (almost 9) and is a blue belt. He goes to two classes a week 6-7pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. The staff are really great and know each kid by name, super helpful. The older kids/black belts help teach the younger. It is a family owned business here for years probably decades, they also have a North location run by the grandmaster's son. His grandsons are the primary instructors right now at this one. I got into it for the self discipline, self defense and elder respect it encourages. My son really likes it. It's year round. Masks used at all times right now. There are many poomsae (movements exercised as if there is an imaginary opponent) to learn and with each belt, one must demonstrate the number of these required to move up. They also spar at times and many exercise drills as a group. They do offer a free class to try out before joining. You can do taekwondo and judo, think the monthly rate for both is $150/mo.
