I am young and used to not being listened to, but this visit took it to the worst possible level. Dr. Mabile has ignored my pain on multiple visits before this since 2022 and never provided any medication or numbing, but what I experienced with Dr. Illston can only be described as casual cruelty. She first left me in the room for over 45 minutes, then came in and out repeatedly, leaving for long periods. She also refused to re-prescribe me my birth control, which cost about $2.00 with insurance, even after I asked. She instead prescribed me Slynd (which they seem to be pushing lately), which costs over $200 even with insurance. During the pap smear "attempt," I was given no pain relief, and she ignored my discomfort and pain and tried to tell me that a tampon and speculum were the same size; therefore, this should be no problem. She also inquired about my sexual activity and virginity status, then recommended penetrative sex as a way to get used to the pain. Needless to say, her comments were extremely inappropriate and rude, bordering on discriminatory language. I would not recommend this practice to any woman of color or queer person, as they are not affirming or understanding in the slightest. Dr. Illston, in particular, should be fired. For such a medically invasive field, one would hope they'd be better, but practice does not care about you or your feelings.

First of all, having been a patient of Dr. Gonzalez for 18+ years, and therefore, having a pretty good read on how he responds to patient concerns, I can't help but to feel that Dr. Gonzalez was trying to get a read on how she felt about her mother-in-law's death before responding. He is not the type to jump in and talk over you. Which is why his stopping her and asking her to not present him with multiple issues in the same appointment strikes me as highly unusual and out of character. My personal experience is that as long as you are upfront with your medical concerns when making the appointment so that Joan (his awesome nurse) can schedule the appropriate amount of time, Dr. Gonzalez will spend all the time in the world with you. What's unfair to both Dr. Gonzalez and his other patients who expect their appointment times to be honored is to assume that Dr. Gonzalez can turn a ten minute examination for a single medical issue into a thirty minute examination for multiple medical issues without prior heads up. (Of course, Dr. Gonzalez will extend the appointment if he realizes the previously unmentioned symptoms require immediate attention, but it has to be something urgent.) I wasn't there at Ms. Berger's appointment, but as a long-time patient of Dr. Gonzalez, I can say that he has always given me ample time and has never rushed me through an appointment, even when it's obvious his schedule is packed. His examinations have always been very thorough, and he has never been short or dismissive with me, so to hear that he responded that way to Ms. Berger makes me feel that something must be missing from her story.

My first visit was fine - as a new patient - Dr. Gonzalez was kind and patient with me as I went through the new patient process. At the time I was going through a great deal of stress as we had just moved my mother in law from North Dakota and I had become her caregiver. My second visit was today - 12/21/15 and was horrible. I made the appointment last week telling his PA that I needed to see him for general pain from my back and hip and pain in my feet. Specifically my right foot which was now swollen and difficult to walk on. When I arrived at the office - I discovered that they didn't even have me in their system as a registered patient. When Dr. Gonzalez finally entered the room I told him that my Mother in law had passed away - he sat there with absolutely no emotion and just stared at me. That should have been my first clue. I realized he wasn't going to say anything so I began telling him my symptoms about my feet. He held up his finger signalling me to stop and announced that I was on his schedule for one thing only and he could only treat that one thing and that his schedule was very full. I said that it was all related and he again stated that his schedule was full and began pressing on my foot and told me it wasn't a foot issue. How the hell he could tell that from just pressing on my foot is beyond me. I said fine and then he said that I could schedule another appointment AFTER the holidays for all of my OTHER ISSUES. I became somewhat upset and tried to tell him how difficult it had been to find a doctor since moving to Atlanta that actually does more than one thing and I was beginning to break down. Instead of comfort - I was humiliated. He stood up saying - and I quote - "OK I'M GOING TO CANCEL THIS APPOINTMENT". I then asked what I'm supposed to do and all I got was his back. I was humiliated in front of his staff and as I left crying - I told the front desk that I had better not be billed for this appointment. I am 62 yrs old and I have never been walked out on by a Dr. I know that some Dr's can be all business but never did I think that I would experience the level of rudeness and clear lack of empathy from a healthcare professional. Dr. Gonzalez - you need a course in compassion! you need to go back to bedside manner school. Actually - look up the words COMPASSION AND EMPATHY and have them posted on your wall. Now I am insane amount of pain from location of procedure, I call at 8am, then again at 11am to be pushed into voicemails. To get a call back at 3:15pm to be told I can come get it but they close by 4pm. ... uh what? you ON PURPOSE waited till the last moment to tell me I can drive there to come get the script? Today, at Kenmar Family Practice, all started off well since a nurse called me back inside of the 5 minutes that I got there. She of course did all the basics of height, weight, pulse.... But then after she was done, she said "Wait a few minutes, and the doctor will be right in." 40 minutes later, he STILL had not walked in and nobody peeked in the room saying he was going to be longer than expected. I was starting to struggle to keep my eyes open. He finally came in and simply was "OK" in testing and conference and quickly referred me to a specialist. All in all, out of the half dozen other quacks out of Marietta that I have seen in the past 30 months, he was the better of all evil, and I will come back to try again since it is much better than all other locations.

In short, my visit and follow-up communication from Dr. Kelly were great and I'm happy to have him as my new primary care physician (PCP). Based on this experience, I look forward to the appointments to come. I've been a patient with Piedmont Physicians at Atlantic Station since 2006, starting with James Harrington, MD (internal medicine), but mostly with Belinda Brown-Saddler, MD (family medicine). I saw Dr. Brown-Saddler for my annual physical every year from 2007 to 2023. She left Piedmont Physicians at Atlantic Station to help pilot and lead the relatively-new Piedmont Concierge Medicine program. At my last physical with Dr. Brown-Saddler, she recommended Augusta Essuman-Nelson, DO (internal medicine) to be my new PCP. I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Essuman-Nelson, but then she had a baby (congratulations!), so I switched to Dr. Kelly at the last minute. Everything worked out well because I was very happy with my visit with Dr. Kelly. As a longtime patient at Piedmont Physicians at Atlantic Station, I noticed a new wave of younger doctors and nurse practitioners join this practice in the last few years. The last man standing / OG doctor at this location is Alan Perry, MD (family medicine). If I recall correctly, Dr. Kelly took over for another one of the OG doctors at this location: Patrick Coleman, MD (internal medicine). The only other longtime person I still recognize here is Shonda, who works at the exit desk/counter and often wears a phone headset. She's wonderful. Dr. Kelly is a young doctor (in his 30s). He conducted my annual physical differently from Dr. Brown-Saddler. To be clear, I love Dr. Brown-Saddler and would have kept seeing her if she didn't leave. With Dr. Kelly, I felt like I was getting a "reboot" on my physical. He was very thorough and spent more time with me than I expected. I appreciated that. He recorded our conversation on his phone, I believe to aid in dictating notes for my electronic medical record. He reviewed my numbers on the computer screen with me. He introduced new guidance to me. For example, he didn't do a testicular exam / cough test, which Dr. Brown-Saddler always did. Also, Dr. Kelly didn't suggest an A1c test for me, I assume because I'm low risk. He said A1c tests were something Dr. Brown-Saddler did for all of her patients. I told him to keep ordering the A1c test for me because I always had it done and my health insurance covered it at no additional cost. By chance this year, my A1c came back elevated for the first time ever. Time to reduce eating out and Yelping. Less than a week after my appointment, Dr. Kelly sent me a message on MyChart (Epic) summarizing and explaining all of my lab work. Typically (at least, in recent years), Dr. Brown-Saddler would shoot me quick messages like: "As you have seen, your cholesterol level is improved and your other lab results are within normal limits. Keep up the good work!" Real example. She might also include an informative attachment (e.g., tips on how to lower cholesterol). Dr. Kelly's message was probably about two pages long, and, like the exam, was very thorough. Again, I appreciated that. Dr. Brown-Saddler's messages were straight and to the point, telling me exactly what I needed to know. I think both doctors are great, they just do things differently. Also, I saw Dr. Brown-Saddler for 17 years and I've seen Dr. Kelly only once so far, so things could change. Overall, I did think the office experience and quality of care with Dr. Kelly and the rest of the staff at Piedmont Physicians at Atlantic Station was excellent and I plan to return next year for my 20th (!) consecutive year. Note: In recent years, something changed at Piedmont where I can no longer schedule my next physical less than one year after my previous physical. I used to be able to reset the time of year that I get my physical, but not anymore. I'm guessing it has to do with insurance. However, my insurance benefit is on a calendar-year basis, so I don't have to schedule my physicals a year or more apart. He is polite, professional, and personable, and the perfect compliment to the rest of the staff. I was always seen promptly, and often saw different people. Not such a big deal, but some seemed more knowledgeable than others. I had several areas on my body that needed to be treated, and the doctor who performed my injections worked miracles. I only saw him once and can't say that I ever met Dr. Barbour, yet I've only heard good things about him. I did see the same PA twice, and he gets extra credit for listening to my concerns and showing genuine empathy. Unfortunately I don't recall his name either, another reason why Phil is such a standout!
