When I first heard about the Atlanta Roller Girls a couple years back, it briefly crossed my mind that it would be cool to be a Roller Girl. After seeing my first 'bout' this weekend, two conclusions: 1) Yes. It would indeed be awesome to be an Atlanta Roller Girl in general. and 2) No. It would not be awesome to be a Roller Girl for ME specifically because I would whine about getting hurt, and probably try to instinctively dodge the other girls instead of whack! bam! smack! hitting them like they're supposed to. So, with shattered daydreams about my potential career as a Roller Girl, the second best thing to do, of course, is tell you why you should go watch 'em. The lovely ladies are all doing their bad arse rollin' and derby-ing for the passion . . .and not for the money, because, well, there isn't any. They are all much tougher than I, and nary a tear did I see. You can tell that they're having a good time, there's a ton of team camaraderie and of course, having fun wearing their crazy and fun 'uniforms.' With team like the Denim Demons and Toxic Shock, there are quite a few opportunities for creativity! As a spectator, aside from the roller derby action, the best part I must say is the BYOB functionality. You certainly can't BYOB (well. openly.) to a Braves game, now can ya? And the randomness that they are in the Yaarab Shrine Center on Ponce. Like, girls in skates and fishnets play in the the same place the dudes with tassel hats hang out. You can buy fried shrimp, roller girl t-shirts, and watch the Atlanta teams go head to head, then stick around for the out of town team games and show your Atlanta home team spirit. Their season runs March thru September, and the 2008 season opener tickets sold out a few days before the actual bouts, so plan ahead! The closest I'll come to actually being a Roller Girl is sitting on the front row danger zone, where girls slid into the audience a couple times. But with my BYOB and a comfy spot in the stands? I'm not big into sports of any kind, but I had a great time at the roller derby. The fact that you can bring your own booze is a huge plus! I pre-purchased tickets online, which I would recommend because they seem to sell out fast. The actual game is easy to understand and fun to watch. There will be a game guide on the program that the ushers hand out just in case you get lost. The venue for the home games is the Yaarab Shrine Center on Ponce. This is an experience within itself. The gym looks like an old school high school gym- bleachers and all. My favorite part of the experience was hearing the names of the Rollergirls. They come up with some creative stuff. The Atlanta Rollergirls kick ass, but as a long-time attendee of games I have to post some basic rules and etiquette people should follow: 1.) THERE IS NO GENERAL SEATING. If you and your friends all get up during halftime and come back and your seats are gone, that's on you. Don't tell the people who are sitting where you previously were "You took my seats." We almost saw a fight break out over that. 2.) DO NOT BRING STROLLERS. I repeat, DO NOT BRING A FUCKING STROLLER. It gets packed. There isn't going to be anywhere to put your stroller, and it could block traffic in terms of people needing to walk by. Leave it in your car or don't bring it. 3.) Beer in cans is allowed; beer in bottles is not. 4.) Don't take up all the seating because you have to spread your legs out. Don't be a dick. 5.) People cuss a lot. Don't be clutching your pearls because someone might be talking about sodomy behind you. If you are easily offended, don't come. 6.) DO NOT PUT YOUR FOOT IN SOMEONE'S ASS WHEN YOU ARE SITTING ON THE BLEACHERS. Also, do not keep repeatedly kneeing someone in the back. read more

The parking lot is packed at the Yaarab Shrine Temple; we resort to making our own parking space. Walking in, you're greeted by people tailgating. The events are BYOB. You can leave a cooler in your car and fill up the plastic cup you brought, or you can buy a cup from the Roller Girls for $3. Before you even see the rink (laid out in tape on the floor) you hear the crowd yelling, gasping, screaming. Chicks kickin' ass! The perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon. There are old school bleachers set up on either end of the rink. But, go hardcore, sit on the floor and try to wind up with a Roller Girl in your lap. We were there for a double header. 4 hours of roller madness! If you're not familiar with the sport, don't worry-they give mini lessons throughout the bout, and there's an explanation in the program. Technical Junk: -BYOB-PBR is a sponsor, but the Shiners don't sell booze. -Everything inside the event is cash only. -The concession stand takes tickets you have to buy from a booth right next to the concession stand. Yeah, I don't know. -They have merchandise for sale, but they also have a sale rack, so check it out. Took my 16-year old surrogate brother. I think he's a man now. read more

Oh this was so fun! I was introduced to the joys of watching girls trying to take each other down at high speed on wheels last spring, and I haven't looked back since. My friends and I arrived for the second match of the night, entered the Yaarab Shrine where they hold the bouts, and were in complete bedlam. It was great - so, so entertaining. We managed to find seats on the bleachers (no small feat when I remember how it looked like standing room only), and someone had the insight to find a rule card which helped to semi-understand how the game worked and what the rules were. To be honest, it really didn't matter that much - watching the girls decked out in all kinds of fun outfits including fishnet tights, skirts, great nicknames on jerseys, stars on helmets and more, flying around the rink and occasionally elbowing or body checking their opponents was more than enough. Couple that with a crowd that's BYOB and so pumped up the bleachers were vibrating, refs constantly blowing whistles for fouls and everyone looking to have a good experience and we were all set. The energy of that particular night was just intense and highly contagious. I give those girls serious props - those chicks are a lot tougher than your average girl. We left thoroughly pumped up (it reminded me a little of how I felt after I saw "300" for the first time - haha). I definitely recommend going to a match if you haven't been yet. read more

I've seen some derby out in California, but wanted to check out the home town team. I had an absolute blast! They do a great job of being newby-friendly. The program has the basics (including ref hand signals!) and there are people around to answer questions. An older couple who were new to derby sat in front of me, and they had all of their questions answered. The attendees are very mixed - there were families picknicking, as well as groups of 20-30's people having a small kegger. Note: BYOB, but no glass. Outside there are some concessions, as well as vendors selling jewelry, art, and apparel. Bonus: DSDG *crushed* the visiting opponents. They are worthy of your fandom! read more

Fun night out in the ATL! I bought tickets for the first 2012 game at home and took the bf as part of his b-day present (after watching the Rollergirls movie, he was digging the idea of checking out our home team). It is a cool, unique thing to go to at least once (if not more!). Parking at the actual location (did I mention it's kinda cool that the derby rink is inside a Shrine?) fills up quick, there is another parking lot literally directly across the street where you can also park. The bleachers also fill up quickly, so be prepared togo Indian-style on the floor or stand. While you can't have any glass, you can bring basically whatever you want inside (drinks, food, mini cooler). There are also vendors outside that offer food and (non-alcoholic) beverages. We watched half of the first bout (the home team was killing it) and took a break to grab drinks in L5P (about 3 mins away) -- the game was good and we were enjoying it but we didn't want to wear ourselves out before the big bout of the night... :) We returned just in time for the second bout to kick off and it was much more crowded. Lots of energy -- and once the bout started, lots of action! A lot more hip-checking, bow-dropping girls kicking ass. If you can pick your tickets, I recommend shooting for the second bouts. read more

That was awesome! Yesterday, the wife and I went with some friends to the first home game of ARG (Atlanta Roller Girls) at the Yaarab Shriner's Temple on Ponce. We had never been to a game before, so we didn't really know what to expect. However, we did know enough that sitting closer would be more dangerous/fun, so we sat on the caution/cuidado line right on the turn of the flat track. There was a lot of pushing, shoving, crashing and clapping. The home team, The Dirty South Derby Girls (Atlanta All-stars), was defeated by the Steel-city Derby Demons (From Pittsburgh). But it was not without a fight, and a lot of suspense. Tickets were cheap, but were sold out for the first game. So if you are planning on going, it is probably a good idea to get your tickets ahead of time. Also, arrive early enough to sit on the floor just behind the tape. It will be a blast! Roller derby is an awesome, chill thing to do in Atlanta. I don't really like watching sports, but the rollergirls make it fun and accessible for all. They do a demonstration before every bout, and there are team members walking around taking questions from the audience during the bout to make sure everyone understands what's going on. Bouts are BYOB, but you can't bring any glass. There are usually snacks for sale outside, but I personally enjoy bringing a corndog from Palookaville. Pro tip: go to the OTHER side for a better chance of getting bleacher seats. read more

Yawn. Booooooorrrrring! If you're trying to be the hipsterest hipster on the block you must check out the Atlanta Rollergirls. All your other hipster friends will be there drinking PBRs. The actual excitement is pretty low because it just doesn't feel like they're trying that hard. Most of the girls are just casually skating about. I expected faster paced action on a banked track, but it's basically a high school gym floor which isn't ideal for rollerskating speed. Somehow the ATL team came back in the final seconds and to me it all felt staged. It's probably not, but it felt almost like wrestling to me. It's awesome you can bring your own cooler of beer, but they should indicate on the website that glass bottles aren't allowed inside. For me this was a "I should do this because I live in Atlanta", but after going there's no need to return. read more

I've been a fan for at least four years. While I'm glad to see roller derby gaining in popularity and success in Atlanta, it also feels like they've become more PG rated. We used to look forward to hearing the girls' crazy names, and now they're not nearly as raunchy. Same goes for their "uniforms." That being said, it's still a great time. GO 'STIX! *ahem* Sorry, had to get that out of my system. Let me start again. Forget everything you learned about derby from that old TBS/WCW-style crap that was on in the late 90's. This is nothing like that. The ARG uses a flat track and is definitely not staged. Real women really competing, and it's a blast. It may be confusing at first, but they're very newbie friendly. They do a demo before each bout, the rules are in the program (and above the urinals), and they have incredibly friendly "Ask Me!" girls wandering around. (You're supposed to ask them about the rules and such, but, whatever) The action is fast, the names are amusing, the announcers are entertaining. There's cheap food, but alcohol is byob and no glass containers. Usually a band between bouts and several little booths set up for your shopping pleasure. Make sure you buy some raffle tickets and a t-shirt to support the girls. They don't get paid for this, and actually spend their own money for a lot of what happens. This is a labor of love, don't doubt it. Final advice: buy your tickets early, as they sell out. tl;dr - A great way to spend your Saturday afternoon. BYOB, no glass. read more

If your looking for something a little different and ready for excitement, this is the place to be. Nice crowd, good energy and they have popcorn. So I ask, what more does a girl need. New to the sport? Don't worry they explain the concept in detail before the game begins and provide written information with graphics so you won't be completely lost! They allow you to bring your own beer and alcohol but no glass bottles are allowed. During half-time they provide entertainment in the courtyard and sell fair style food. The parking is not that great. We had to park two blocks over but even if the parking is horrible, make a small donation and more than likely they will fit you in. Yes, I actually was a witness to this bizarre deal. They have a lot across the street and the Shriners were very nice about directing you there instead of having to park on the street. Unfortunately that lot was also full. The street parking was not horrible, I just hated to walk those few extra blocks. All in all, this is a great venue, the people were nice and Im quite sure it provides the Shriners organization with extra dollars that go towards helping Americas youth! read more

The Atlanta Rollergirls play at the Yaarab Shrine Center in January through August, and any bout is worth going to, even if you know nothing about roller derby. I went to my first bout in March and have been going since. Totally looking forward to the DSDG bout tomorrow! After going to the bouth in March I sat there thinking, "Hell yeah! I HAVE to do this shit!". I got a pair of skates and gear and started skating my ass off. I went to my first newb practice on Wednesday and everyone I met was totally awesome. Hell, everyone I've met on the teams have been fantastic. What a great group of kick ass chicks! I'm looking forward to assessments and tryouts. So much fun!!! I went by myself and still had a wonderful time. Out in the outdoor area prior to the matches were fun art vendors and businesses; I bought some really neat stuff. When the matches were going on, the girls walking around to help you understand the rules/games were super friendly. The matches were very entertaining as well as the halftime routines. I only wish there were more matches! Annnnd I like that you can BYOB! Recommendations: come a little early if you have a big group so you can be seated together. Very fun event and funky venue. Would be great to tailgate but I haven't tried. I've taken friends from out of town a couple of times and they love it. Who wouldn't love seeing tough girls battle it out in a rink, while drinking your own favorite brew?? This definitely is a great way to spend the afternoon. A few things to note: - Bring your beer!!! (no bottles). We didn't because for some reason I thought you could buy some on sight-- we had to walk a stretch of Ponce to the nearest gas station and get some, I would have much rather brought my own. - Get there early-- we didn't and had to park a few streets over. Not a big deal, but a little added stress. - ALSO- if you get there early you can get a seat in the stands, which is much better than on the floor, but I saw some people sitting in those tiny folding "seats" where you can lean back-- definitely a good idea and no-one's view was blocked. We learned the hard way that during half time it isn't appropriate to try to snag a seat in the bleachers. You'd think it's okay considering the overall "losers weepers" attitude of the game, but it doesn't spread to the stands. Turf is valuable out in the bleachers. - There is some explanations in the programs which explain the rules, and someone carrying a sign which said that you could ask them any question, which I did take advantage of, and they were super nice. - I didn't use the bathrooms, and they didn't look too great from what I could tell. Overall, I think I might go back. The fellow spectators scared me more than the athletes, but I think it's an awesome sport, and overall great time. read more

It's well organized - there's an announcer who introduces the players and explains the rules. There are 'cheerleaders' (one was dressed in an elaborate silver cat outfit) who lead the fans in cheers.
