Atlantic Dermatology exudes exceptionalism in care and genuine concern for patients. Dr. Jonathan Crane is also a noted teacher at Atlantic Dermatology's training center of excellence for resident doctors. My wife once cut her leg badly on a Sunday when the urgent care near us was closed. I called Dr. Crane in a panic and he actually met us at his office that Sunday afternoon. He cleaned, stitched and disinfected her bad wound. Another time, his amazing Nurse Cleary correctly noted an internal infection in my shoulder after the orthopedic surgeon and his PA had both misdiagnosed the post surgical infection as a dermatology issue. Atlantic Dermatology used to be a good facility but that was many years ago. They have gotten too big and it shows in their continuously deteriorating customer service. They are now owned by a giant out-of-state company which has resulted in less accountability for their poor performance. I don't understand how they can have so many employees yet you can never get any real customer service. And much of the staff does not seem to be well-trained at all. It's difficult to reach a real person by phone at Atlantic and when you finally get someone, rarely do you get a person who knows what they're doing. Most of them seem constantly confused and very vague in all their answers. It's like it's their first day on the job. They also make billing mistakes and then good luck finding the right person who can help you. And when you finally see a doctor, the ones I've had are in and out of the room so fast that you suspect they are using stopwatches to keep from going over spending 3 1/2 minutes with you. I have switched to a smaller dermatologist's office. One that doesn't make me feel like I'm on a conveyer belt on an assembly line. One that is not part of the giant conglomerations who are taking over all the healthcare facilities in Wilmington. I do not recommend Atlantic Dermatology. read more

I wasn't impressed staff is professional enough but man they seem like they hate working here. I have to admit Natalie was very pleasant in the back and knows customer service but after an 1.25 hr wait, the doc who came in was in and out like someone pulling off an armed robbery. I will tell the VA I want to go else where next year and if I get skin cancer between now and then, we will talk some more about the service and the young lady who examined me. The business failed in treating people like another body, you had 4 mins with me to make an impression and you blew it. Why 3 stars? Its my first visit and I wont be going back to make and 2nd and 3rd visit for my 3 strikes, so you make your own decision about this place "IF" you go. read more

I very rarely post negative reviews, I believe this is a first. Normally, things go well, or issues can be resolved by talking with someone in charge. Not so with Atlantic Dermatology. In early May I realized I had a mole that looked suspicious. I called Atlantic Dermatology asking for an appointment. I have been a patient for 12 years. I was figuring 3-4 weeks. I was told the earliest I could be seen was September. I remember explaining my situation to the scheduler and she was firm. No cancelation list or offer of a satellite office. The following Monday I called and asked to speak to the office manager. I was told she would call me back. She did not. On Tuesday I called and asked to speak to the office manager. I was asked what my name was, and put on hold. When the scheduler came back on line I was told the office manager wasn't in. I asked to leave a message. Repeat Wednesday, and Thursday. On Friday I called Atlantic Dermatology and explained I would be happy to come in person to talk with someone in charge and I had nothing better to do. Later on Friday a nurse returned my call. I was mortified. Imagine a nurse taking a call from a disgruntled patient. I told her I simply wanted to speak with an officer manager. She was kind and told me she would make sure someone reached out. Within 30 minutes I had a voice mail from the office manager. At this point, it wasnt about getting an appointment, I already had one with a new dermatologist, Summit Dermatology, for the following Wednesday. It is incredulous to me Atlantic Dermatology doesnt hold appointments for just such emergencies. Again, 12 year patient asking for a mole check in 3-4 weeks. I want to start by saying, I LOVED my dermatologist Karla and the assistants. They were always so kind and very informative! On the downside - most of the staff here all seem like they don't want to work here and are not welcoming/kind. I called a handful of times within the last month or two to try and make an appointment, no one ever answered the phone or called me back after leaving 2 voicemails! I give up. I drive 90 minutes, often in the congested traffic that has become Wilmington, for skin care because... Dr Crane and the medical staff are superb. My go to person, Karla, is so very knowledgeable, thorough and has a terrific sense of humor! She is just the best, and the reason I return. Yes, appointments are tricky and trying to piggy back appointments to avoid yet another 3 hr round trip drive is near impossible. But, I think this is the result of excellence in practice; hence a huge volume of patients. Consider, we're an aging demographic who are discovering our youthful folly in the sun is now haunting us. And, the receptionists are front line - we don't know who may have been rude or disrespectful prior to our check-in. It's not worth the rise in BP. Count your blessings instead! Dr Crane has biopsied several spots that other providers have overlooked or put off to just watch it. I've had countless basal cell and just recently he found my first melanoma. So small and under my butt cheek. I would have never caught that myself. The staff is kind and communication is great. Reminder texts and emails. Portal to get documents. I been to this office for a few years now and pay cash. The front staff always seemed unfriendly as if it's the worst job in this world, somewhat rude. Ask a question and get some snarky answer. Waiting to be called 40 minutes after a scheduled appointment is not right. This occurs at every visit. I am big on being on time. So am always a bit early. Twice I called bc I was running about 10 minutes late. They suggested I reschedule bc being late was a no no. My reschedule appointments were one or two months down the road. I will NEVER go back to Atlantic Dermatology again. After seeing Patricia Hood, PA-C, I felt like I wasted hundreds of dollars for an office visit. Not only is she not friendly, you are lucky to get a grunt out of her! She doesn't offer any type of feedback, nor does she communicate what she sees and doesn't offer up any solution to a minor skin condition. Despite doing a full body check she failed to communicate a skin condition that could have been treated easily. Since it was on my back, I wasn't aware it was there. I called the office and the corporate office in RDU to express my dissatisfaction with her lack of communication. They said to schedule a follow-up visit, which I would have had to pay for again! Today was my first visit to Atlantic Dermatology in Wilmington and I already booked 2 more appts. Dr. Maxfield was pleasant and thorough but it was his assistant Lynn that I fell in love with and the reason for my 2 more appts. She was wonderful gathering my information and asking questions I remembered there was something else that could be addressed and therefore saved me a 2nd visit. Lynn gave me samples of an expensive treatment product, taught me how to use it, and was super clear about the care for my after visit. LOVED Lynn. See you in Jan! read more

We are new to the area. I made appointments for my wife and I at the Shallotte office. The earliest available appointments were in June. My wife had a spot appear on here forehead. I stopped by the office on Shallotte and picked up the new patient paperwork. I explained the spot on my wife's face and asks if I could get an earlier appointment. The receptionist said that wouldn't happen. We would just have to wait. It seemed that walking 10 feet across the office to get the new patient paperwork was a real inconvenience. I called an other provider who worked my wife in right away. Thanks goodness I paid attention to my instincts, it was an aggressive skin cancer. I've been dealing with this place for almost 10 years but not any longer. I will be finding another dermatologist. I had to reschedule my appointment due to a lapse in my insurance. All I needed was a week to get my new insurance instated, but they told me the next available appointment was 6 months out. I reluctantly took that appointment since my condition isn't life threatening. Well the day of my new appointment I get a call from their office saying the provider that I'm seeing called out and that they can not schedule me until 5 months out. This is not acceptable, I told them no thanks. And I asked them what would would have happened if I had a life threatening condition and they placed my appointment another 5 months out?? That's a total of 11 months gap for an appointment! People please don't trust your health to this place because they do not care. They have NO system in place to see patients that are cancelled at no fault of their own. Don't trust them with your health. read more

Unfortunately, we had two negative experiences with the Atlantic Dermatology practice and will not return. We scheduled with a specific doctor who had expertise in removing moles and waited months for the appointment. When we had the appointment, the doctor came in very briefly and a physician's assistant who said they just started st the practice and new to removing moles was the one who did it with no supervision. We specifically scheduled for someone with experience and instead got someone without experience, which was not okay. We had another appointment that we waited months for. The day before, they called to cancel and said that the next available appointment was not for 5 months, which is not acceptable. read more

I have nothing but great things to say about my doctor. I've had terrible dermatologist in the past who put me on medication I didn't need to be on and it gave me other issues, and the doctors at Atlantic fixed me right up urgently and made me feel important. The problem I'm having with them is the receptionists. Each time I've called trying to handle blood work, appointments, etc they've been so short with me. Was seen 6 or 8 months ago for an incredibly itchy spreading case of eczema. Was prescribed potent topical steroid, and warned to use it sparingly. I have only ever used it as needed and only for as long as needed, usually 3-4 days. I am running low, tried to refill it, was told I'd need to be rechecked and I said OK. Only there are no appointments for THREE MONTHS. I explained that it is a very uncomfortable problem and it can't wait that long. Terribly sorry, NO available appointments. My wife had a cancerous growth removed from her nose. They did a very nice cosmetic job, and told her to recheck in 3 months. That would have been March. Three cancellations later, she is supposed to now be seen in September, SIX MONTHS LATER THAN THEY SUGGESTED. I'm sorry, either hire more MDs and PAs or close your doors and go away. My family has been seeing Dr Crane for over 30 years. Excellent, excellent care! My son was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma over 5 years ago. He is cancer free today due to a quick observation and referral to Duke for treatment. Dr Crane caught a spot that he suspected as melanoma during my daughter's routine exam. He performed a biopsy that tested positive. Within a week he had her scheduled for the removal and treatment of that area. Starting with the very cheerful, sweet lady that greeted patients at the door, ( what a gem!), that was tasked with asking you the all too familiar Covid questions before entering the office, I have dealt with many nurses, residents and PA's through the years. I have always had a pleasant experience. I have read reviews that state if the reviewer could leave 0 stars, they would. Horrible service. Unprofessional. All they care about is money and try to keep you coming back without actually helping you. My daughter was being treated for acne and you had to wait forever to get an appointment. Finally the day of appointment, 2 hours before scheduled time they call and cancel your appointment. Then they try to tell you a lie about your doctor not being there. Why would you schedule an appointment if they weren't there. Asked for other doctor in the practice. Dr. Crane is a wonderful doctor and I should know, he has been my dermatologists for over 20 years. He has helped me through skin cancer and other concerns over the years and I could not ask for a more thorough MD. In fact I moved out of the area but I am driving back to town in two weeks to have my yearly skin check. He is very compassionate and professional. I'm picky when it comes to my doctors. Yes, I have had to wait on occasion , but it was always worth the wait to know that the "care" I receiving was of the highest standards. Sometimes the best doctors get behind because they are doing their best for each patient. Sometimes a patient needs more time that could be anticipated and he is willing to take that extra time. I went to Dr.Crane to have a small spit removed from my cheek. I had been to other dermatolagists and was given hydraquinone, retin-a, zapped with a cyro...freezing...but Dr.Crane proceeded to take a biopsy of spot, sent it out and promptly called to state the results: melanoma. The staff already referred me to Wilmington Plastic Surgery. I have already had the surgery to excise this deadly fast growing tumor. I am forever grateful to Dr.Crane for saving my life...so many physicians are selling " beauty" and the procedures offered are very seductive....but " first do no harm" ..Dr.Crane's experience, professionalism, kindness, attentiveness, empathy and caring nature made the communication of the "C" word easier to digest. He removed the emotion and explained a possible plan. I completed the surgery already with Dr.Morgan, a skilled surgeon explained the excision and recovery very thoroughly, so i knew what to expect. I am healing and will continue to follow up with Dr.Crane and sometime in the future will pursue all the "pretty things" for tweaking, smoothing and rejuvenating...but for now..i am so grateful to Dr.Crane for seeing past pretty and finding the ugly before it was too late...that is medicine at its best...Dr Crane and his team are exactly what I was looking for...mary ann cotrone read more
