There was no controlling him. Bit didn't work at all. They know where they are going and they do what they want. The horses (more than one) threw their riders down in a brook/river part of the ride. We ended up in Truro - and followed the little signs to the Park. Bottom line - well worth the 1-1 1/2 hour drive from Halifax. There's a great playground area for kids, an outdoor pool open from June for the summer, picnic spots galore, loads of parking and fantastic hiking. There's Jacob's Ladder - 175 very steep steps, or take a more leisurely stroll along a winding, stream with rapids that end at a terrific waterfall. I admit it. I'm a sucker for waterfalls, even if it's just a trickle of water escaping from a mountain side. Even though this one is nothing like Niagara Falls, it's a wonderful place to hang out. Next time I'll pack a picnic lunch.

After years of loving scary movies and slasher flicks, I've kind of grown out of loving a good scare (or just became a wuss, your call). We only get a dozen or so trick-or-treaters each year too, so it's easy to avoid getting caught up in the holiday all together. Or it would be if I didn't spend most of the year looking forward to the return of the Haunted Corn Maze. We drove out to Truro in a convoy of our friends' vehicles arriving around 6pm on a brisk Saturday night in October. It was already dark but you couldn't miss the line-up measuring in the thousands. THOUSANDS. It was insane. I hadn't seen anything quite like it in Atlantic Canada before. Had the maze been any closer to the city, we probably would have bailed but we were glad to have stuck it out. The line didn't move quickly either...we waited for a couple of hours but since all of our friends were in tow, well...time didn't exactly fly but it was manageable. The lineup experience is made a little easier with some food carts, some optical illusion tunnels that freak out the stoned kids, and of course the shrieks of terror from within the maze. Once you're in? Well buckle up. It's about half an hour of feeling really silly for getting so scared of an experience you know in your heart is all a show. But as much as you try to remind yourself that, it's hard to convince yourself to be the first of your group to walk by the little girl rocking back and forth in a tattered wedding dress, or the man with the running chainsaw, or the several fake-but-not zombies on the dilapidated school bus that you need to cross through. Also, you're going to learn a lot about your friends based on who just books it and leaves the rest of you for dead when you're all suddenly being chased by a mob of serial killers. Yep - that happened and no, it wasn't me. At least not the first time. I don't remember the exact number but there are dozens if not over 100 actors stashed throughout the maze, each wholeheartedly determine to make you pee yourself. And guys? It's so legit. The costumes, make-up, and commitment from every single person working is out of control. And I don't say that lightly. I mean, c'mon, I'd clearly have a hate-on for anything that sucked after making me wait for hours. It really is one of the best nights out you can have during a Nova Scotia fall. The cost is $14 per person for the maze, $14 per person for the haunted farm house (which we skipped), or $20 for both. Personally, I'd be cautious about bringing kids along because it does get pretty intense. Teenagers are probably in the clear. You should know that it's not a maze per se. You're actually on a track to make sure you get the full experience and they keep the audience on track. You're in for a solid 30 minutes and it feels even longer...but in a good way.

Wow. If you like to be scared, this is the place. I honestly didn't think a small town corn maze…read morewould be "that" scary or well done, but after seeing the billboards in Halifax, I got some friends together and off we went. With lots of parking just across the road, this place is easy to find and really caters to their guests. While you wait for tickets (I strongly suggest buy for the corn maze and haunted house) you can grab some snacks and hot chocolate! As well, some creepy fellows visit while in line. And there is a "fun" house right by the line which you can do while your friends wait for the tickets. So....got your tickets...let's head off. Hold on tight to a friend, because it is frightening from the beginning. With characters creeping out of the corn when you don't expect it, following you, intercepting your path. These ghouls are equipped with chainsaws and syths and anything else you can think of. Luckily the creators have carved out the path for you, because I was so afraid that if I got lost I may have had a heart attack. As you keep going there are more creepy obstacles that forces you into the scary world. And there is no way around it. I am not joking folks, it is frightening. So you survived it and you run up to the haunted house, thinking nothing could be as bad...especially in such as small building. Wrong. It is even more frightening. Apparently created by engineers who worked at Disney (not sure where I heard this), you can tell this was put together by professionals. This isn't a house filled with dollarstore spiders and cobwebs. They built interested and scary attractions at every turn in this building, with actors who are so frightening you have to wonder if they are real. Honestly, this was the best 25$ I ever spent. Was a little too scared to go this year, but next year I put on my big girl panties and try again. Remember: dress warm and in old clothes...you may get muddy from falling. I did hear they put crusher dust down this year, but I would still wear older clothes.

I was lucky to get paired with a couple (only 3 guests on the boat) that were up for as wild a ride as mother nature & Jason were willing to provide. It was a brisk June morning, and the water was chilly (especially when it splashes down your back), but the survival suits made a huge difference for post dousing warm-up. We saw well over a dozen eagles, amongst other feathered friends. All the tidal bore companies are off the beaten path a bit, so opt for the slightly longer trip at only an extra $20/pp (it's worth it). The hot chocolate / coffee / cookies after the trip were a welcome treat. They have towels if you need'm for post-trip showers. Jason said the waves were the highest he'd seen thus far this year, which was great. The boat trip wasn't quite as wild as I was expecting (compared to the intensity of some white-water rafting), but a very good time. They have the estimated wave intensity schedule posted on their website, pay close attention to that when planning your trip (should you want more or less chaos). If you have a wet suit (or water shoes), you may want to bring with you, as the water can be cold (my feet were very chilly). If you're susceptible to cold, this may not be the trip for you (but ambient & water temperatures vary). If I were to make suggestions to the owner, I'd propose bringing a canister of hot chocolate and of coffee to hand out to guests during a lull (maybe by the bridge), to help warm people up on the cooler days; and maybe gloves with rubber grips, as holding onto the ropes for a long time in cold water can chaff waterlogged hands/fingers.
