With just about everything you can find at the city Pete's locations and a few special extras, all I could think about was how awesome it must be to go to Acadia and have all that within walking distance at all times. Where they go awry a little bit is on the to-go counters. The wait times ended up being a bit outrageous for no particular reason. A breakfast sandwich to go took about 25 minutes (no joke), and I saw a breakfast smoothie take about 15. Maybe they were just getting things started that morning and hadn't set up all their ingredients, but it was a bit much.

This warehouse turned grocery store has a feeling like no other - exposed wooden beams in the ceiling, alcoves that give the illusion of rooms rather than departments, and finally the view - it's not everyday you shop for produce with a panoramic view of water and (a not so distant) Blomidon. It's a magical place where you arm yourself with plastic bags (like the ones at the grocery store) and you walk around and scoop stuff into them. It's that simple but it's also that awesome. Almost anything you can think of, they have it here. There's 12 different kinds of flour for goodness sake! Candy, rice, spices, dog bones, pie filling...you name it, they have it. And you can get whatever quantity you want, from a pinch to a pound! You pay based on the weight but we bought about 10 different things and barely broke 20 dollars. You want to try quinoa but you're not sure you'll like it? Buy a cup worth. Got a weird addiction to Sour Skittles and you're embarrassed the convenience store guy is starting to notice? Buy three pounds at Bulk Barn. Our only knock is that we wish their scoops had measurements on them in case you're buying portions to cook with.

Based on their website, I was expecting a store, but what I found was a dirty, rundown porch of a house with a few dusty shelves containing their honey products and a self service cash box. Based on what I saw, I did not have enough confidence in the cleanliness of their processing to buy their product. Sorry.

But I especially love to visit them at the Halifax Farmers Market, just to see all their lovely beeswax candles and creams. Of course I buy the honey - that goes without saying. For a girl who used to turn her nose up at honey, I became a convert while living in Toronto. It's lovely to know I can get the most fantastic honey produced right in the Annapolis Valley.

I told him when I asked I was given permission and he proceeded to add even ruder and more loudly than the first time that he told me to get it out! My friend and I kindly left our baskets on the counter and took our business elsewhere. It's just minutes away from the downtown and is the perfect stop on your way back for lunch after an hour or two lost in the Noggin's corn maze. The parking lot around the main building is a total gong show, so go slow and keep your eyes peeled for unaware city slickers who are all but guaranteed to step out in front of your bumper with no notice. Still, you can't really blame them-the fresh baked goods (sticky buns! still warm!), gorgeous produce, and general charm of the farmhouse is enough to make anyone lose grip on reality. You can also pick up picking bags at the cash before trekking up into the apple fields. Sections are loosely marked to show off Cortlands, Macs, Red Delicious, Empire, and many more, but you'll see most people hiking aimlessly up the mountain for about thirty minutes on their way to the Honeycrisps. You can mix any of the apples into a single bag since they're all the same cost, except for the much pricier Honeycrisp apples. We were told the following from the lady behind the cash: "If I see so much as one Honeycrisp in your bag, I'm charging you for a full bag of Honeycrisp. I don't even care." Unnecessarily serious, if you ask me. But hey...them's the rules.
