I just received my images back from Atrero and am beyond elated at all the beautiful pictures of my family. I personally have some background in photography so it was such a pleasure to have an opportunity to be in front of the camera for once. From start to finish, Karen was so great to work with. Her email and text communications were clear and organized (which I can definitely appreciate). Our session was with Karen at the beach with my kids, one of which was a typical 6 year old boy who was seriously all over the place. Karen was so patient with us and particularly in working with him, to still be able to capture the spirit of our true interactions. In family portrait sessions, I particularly appreciate the candid photos, because the posed ones I feel I can get any time, as well as often they don't look completely natural. In our photos, we looked natural even in the more formal shots - whoohoo! I received our files in a super timely manner - within 2 weeks of our session via Dropbox. Karen and Ed were perfect wedding photographers. They were very chill, flexible, easygoing, and approachable --- all without compromise to their services and talent. We enjoyed keeping in touch with them through the planning process. We live in Las Vegas and only came to San Diego every month so or so they were definitely very flexible with timing and meetings. I definitely recommend using their complimentary engagement session (dependent on package purchased) as a way to break the ice and so you can both get a feel of personalities and style. On the day of Ed, Karen, and their assistant Desiree were on hand to ensure that every detail was photographed. It was a very hot day in October but they kept pressing on! The team had a list ahead of time for which formal shots we wanted. One thing I recommend (and it's my fault for not doing so) is to also provide a list or idea of what kind of non-formal shots you'd like. They were able to get the products (highlights video, online gallery and USB) to us within 2 months which is very timely for this service. The photos were beautiful and just our style. Atrero Photography was hands down our favorite vendors from our wedding. My husband and I got married 3 years ago and were completely lost at the beginning of our wedding planning process. I used Atrero Photography for my wedding in late June 2011 and couldn't be more pleased with working with the husband and wife team, Ed and Karen, and ecstatic about how beautiful our photos turned out. Ed and Karen are so professional and passionate about what they do and it comes through the images they capture. My favorite ones were the ones where you didn't even know they were there. Early on, Karen mentioned that they would be like ninja photographers and she was right! Out of the handful of wedding photographers that were recommended to us, we easily knew who our choice of snapshooters would be. With their keen eye for angles, shadows, lighting and surroundings, they clearly produced works of art. We contacted them immediately. Reading their website, we also discovered the Atrero Posse shared a few interests as my fiance I did (i.e. hiphop, craft beers & food), so we were more than eager to work with this tandem. Karen is the communicator ninja - we mostly corresponded w/her through emails which were answered friendly and promptly. We soon set-up our engagement shoot in San Diego, where they showed up on time and even picked us up from our hotel! We shot at a few different locations recommended by them (1 indoor, 2 outdoor). 5 years ago I wanted to fly the Atreros to Hawaii to shoot my wedding, but it just wasn't in the budget. So, when I heard Karen was coming to the bay to do mini-sessions, I couldn't resist! (Mind you, my family had just taken photos with another photographer just weeks before.) Karen was amazing (but I already knew that). I've taken both the Newbie to Ninja & Light LIke a Ninja class and I can 100% tell you that you will walk away feeling much more confident behind the camera. With the lighting class I went in only knowing the bare minimum basics, and now I feel like Ed has given me enough to really get creative with lighting in a way the is practical & efficient during the rush of a wedding day. I found Karen and Ed on wedding wire, liked the reviews so I checked out their pictures. They were stunning! After emailing them and making sure they were in my budget, they were hired! They were so responsive to any and all emails. They were friendly and detail oriented. Come wedding day, they showed up early, and stayed to the very end (even though this was over their contracted time). During the wedding they were courteous but everywhere, snapping pictures right and left. The specific shots I wanted were obtained and there wasn't a snag in the day. Come 3 months later when the picture slide show arrived - were were over the moon of how they turned out! The next day, an online site with all our pictures was emailed to us, then the next day, a box with a USB with all our pictures. The quality of the pictures is amazing. They arrived to the venue on time, needed no help setting up, and were the nicest people ever to work with! The pictures came out great, and everyone at the company Christmas party loved them! We didn't make the photo booth easy for them lol as we had a 10 foot gondola prop which guests could sit in, as part of the open air photo booth. The photobooth set up itself was easy to use and unobtrusive in the small space (very clean and modern). It's been a year and a half since Atrero has photographed our wedding and because I still follow their blog, I can honestly say their work never ceases to amaze me. In this short time, my husband and I have been to numerous weddings and have seen the work of other photographers doing engagement and wedding shoots for some of our dearest friends. It was a most recent wedding in June that compelled me to update my review because watching the photographers at our friends wedding, gave me a whole new meaning to Atrero's NINJA skills. During this wedding, one of the main photographers literally stood in the main aisle during the majority of the hour long church ceremony. She was not taking pictures the entire time and she was so close to the couple, she pretty much blocked the entire congregations view. At one point, I'm assuming the videographer got frustrated and ended up standing right next to her in the aisle so that he could get a clear shot of the couple. The photographer proceeded to do this at the wedding reception as well, crowding the couple whenever they were up and also blocking the view of the couple sitting at their sweetheart table. Maybe she used to be a paparazzo? Who knows? I know for a fact that this is not how Atrero works, mainly because, not only did we get so many great shots from Atrero, they allowed many of our guests to take great pictures of us as well. Karen and Ed have the ability of taking great shots from all sorts of angles, near and far, while barely being noticed by the couple and the guests in attendance. Aside from the time spent taking your couples photos with Karen and Ed, you'll barely notice them during the ceremony or reception. However, once you review your pictures, you will definitely see that they really were all over the place getting every shot they could, capturing moments you might not have even been around to see for yourself. It's true that your wedding day goes by so quickly, but investing in Atrero will guarantee that so many moments of that day will be captured by their awesome work.
