Prices are pretty decent. Servers were friendlier and more engaging to us "American Tourists" than most of the other spots we visited in Paris. We got the La Rochelle seafood platter and it was solid but not amazing. The price is relatively cheap compared to USA/Los Angeles prices. The whelks and winkles cooked with star anise were awesome...i pretty much ate all 40-50 of them! The crab and langoustines which were the main attractions were meh...ok but not super fresh, you can tell because the meat was already turning a bit mushy. We also got the crepes suzette which was pretty awful because there was way too much alcohol and nearly none of it was burned off so it was like eating a crepe completely soaked in alcohol. read more

We've been here twice already. Once for lunch outside, and the second time for dinner indoors the following day. Quintessential Parisian restaurant. The waiters are friendly and will try to cater to Americans. The food is good, the atmosphere is very French, and we've been satisfied the both times that we've been here. I tried my first taste of foie gras and was very satisfied. I appreciated the waiter's instructions on how to eat it with the bread. The staff was attentive to our needs the whole time. In a nutshell: - remember that Spanish mussels are served raw and have a gritty salty flavor profile. - the steamed mussels are magnificent - the French onion soup is a MUST TRY. They delicately balance the broth, cheese and onion and the flavor is AMAZING. - the hazelnut encrusted lamb is a small portion but worth the spend. They came out juicy and the hazelnut was a surprisingly nice touch. - my friend didn't enjoy the mussels and offended the server so they never came back BUT another waiter stepped in and more than compensated for the untimely departure. -it has a beautiful street view as most Parisian restaurants do and I highly recommend a window seat. - the wine selection is vast and I recommend the Pinot noir Overall we had a great experience and will add this to the list of restaurants to return to. read more

Au Chien qui Fume is a fine dining choice in the area of les Halles. It is also a price point above your typical brasseries, bistros or cafés in the area. The fresh seafood, such as clams and oysters, is artfully presented (see pics) on ice. Friendly and helpful staff. For lunch, I chose Caesar salad (La Grande Salade Caesar) with fresh clams appetizer. Colleagues chose casserole of snails with mushrooms (La Cassolette d'Escargots aux Pleurotes), steak (Le Filet de Boeuf Grillé with Sauce Béarnaise), and the seafood selection of the day, and plate of fresh oysters. Smoking-dog Explanation: When it is time to leave, you are given humorous and memorable postcards of smoking dogs. Will send to some dog-loving friends. I think the original owner loved his poodles and terriers who could smoke a pipe fitting Sherlock Holmes. Really. Smoking dogs are part of the restaurant's motif. We had breakfast here on our last morning in Paris. Located near our hotel, it is an easy walk. The server spoke English which was a plus. We ordered the omelets, with brioche & I had a cappuccino. I never got to see the smoking dog they were referring to! :) The staff here was friendly when we entered. It was freezing outside, so we were just glad to be out from the elements. We ordered the prix fixe dinners--one was a chicken pot and the other was a pork pot (both with vegetables in sauce). There was a ton of food! We couldn't finish it all. Had dinner tonight here with my two teenagers. The menu is a little more sophisticated than the average brassiere. We ordered a bottle of wine and escargot with morels in cream and onion soup for starters. Service was fast but for the first time in our trip I sensed the foretold disdain of Americans from our waiter. My daughter had the chicken casserole, braised chicken in cream with onions, mushrooms and small potatoes which was very good. I had the duck breast with roasted pears. The duck was fully cooked and not pink as it should be. The pears were smoke and nicely cooked with the slightest bit of firmness left. There was a sweet reddish sauce on the duck which with the pears made the dish a little sweeter than necessary. My son had a plate of French fries that were crisp and good steak fry style. 4 stars because of the escargot and oysters. My bf and I were so hungry and cold because it was raining that day and the restaurant we wanted to try around that area was closed for three months. Bad timing I know.... So we found this place and it was even better because they had an English menu! We waited for about 10 minutes so we were assuming this place was ok given the amount of people eating here. Everyone was ordering the seafood platter but we just ordered from the prix fixe menu. I had the escargot and grilled fish. The bf had the oysters and calf head hotpot. Sounds strange but he wanted to try something different. The escargot was already out of the shell and into a creamy sauce soup thing. It was so good! The oysters were quite fresh. They helped me debone the fish and that was quite yummy as well. My bf's calf head soup hot pot was literally a hot pot. There was no way he could finish it. The calf head was fatty and tasty but it got a bit salty near the end. It was a good experience but I'm sure there are better restaurants out there. read more

One of the hotel staff recommended us to dine at Au Chien Qui Fume. We were thinking about having some oysters and this was the perfect place. We started off with a seafood platter, which had oysters, clams, mussels, welks, winkles, shrimp and baby shrimp. This was the first time I tried raw mussels and they were very fresh. All the shellfish were very fresh. My daughter had fun using needles to get meat out of little winkles. I grew up eating them when I was little but this was the first time for her. For the main course we ordered escargot casserole and French onion soup. They were delicious. And yummy cream brûlée. Excellent service. Three guys took good care of us. read more

This delightful bistro was located near our Air bnb and I am sorry we waited until so late in the trip to trip it. I had fish and chips that came with some greens, and my kids dined on "chicken nuggets" (really a pan fried chicken breast cut into slices), and a "cheeseburger" that was sized for an adult, both of which came with a crepe for dessert. The service was friendly and accommodating, the bathroom downstairs is like from a magazine, and we felt very welcome. I would definitely eat here again if I was in the neighborhood. read more

"The Smoking Dog." Adorable theme. Who doesn't love dogs? And smoking, that's cool, right? To my American English-primed ears, "Au Chien Qui Fume" sounds so exotic and romantic. The painted dogs with pipes on the walls and bar panels are charming, storybook-like details. Au Chien Qui Fume is a notch above your average brasserie. We had two types of oysters, salad with foie gras, duck gizzards, and smoked duck. All the food was amazing, especially if you like duck. If you love fresh seafood, this is a great choice. They have a full bar running; we paired our meal with Pelforth blonde beer on tap (can't get that in California!). When we were there, the restaurant was about 2/3rds full. Despite that, the service is super fast, accommodating, and tourist-friendly. Highly recommended for an overall lovely French dining experience (at least from this newbie tourist's point of view). read more

I'm mitigated about this place, the food wasn't bad but the service was horrible: 1) waiters wake each two minute to ask if we want to start with something to drink, we said "no" several times and they just stop when they had our order. 2) The waiter break a bottle of wine on my pants, no offer from the house 3) waiters were moving stuff on the table using the plate... The kitchen team seems to be good and have some great ideas but I hope the management will change the service team asap to avoid getting tons of bad reviews. read more

Loved this place. A bit dated decoration but it kind of helps the overall ambiance of this typical French restaurant. The food is served by kind waiters who were very helpful and pleasant. Plates were great and the wine recommended by the waiter also complied fully to my expectation. Seeing that they were very nice to the tables next to us, we could not help but deduce that they were discriminating us in terms of service. Most of the positive reviews (French and English) seem to come from people who have ordered the seafood platter. Maybe that's what gives you human dignity here. Party of two at dinner. I asked for an English menu as my friend does not speak French, and when I made a small grammatical error the waiter almost yelled "non, non, non" then corrected me. We ordered the course menu, and when asked did not order wine because we do not drink alcohol. The waiter said "Why you no drink wine?"in the same condescending tone he used to correct my French. We wanted to say that we will instead order drinks without alcohol, but he just walked away. When our food was served, the same waiter explained to my friend how to eat their food. "You must pour this sauce from the pot onto the food". Maybe he was just doing his job, but with the service we've had so far, it sounded patronising. The food is well presented and cooked. Finally, when it was time for us to pay the check, another waiter came towards our table and stood there. The closest guests were two tables away so we thought he was bringing us the bill instead of our waiter, so we asked if we could please have the bill. He yelled (the tables next to us turned and started watching) "Pourquoi vous me demandez ça?!!" ("Why you ask me this?"). We apologised and said since he was standing there he wanted to check on us. I don't know in what kind of establishment customers apologise to the staff for making a simple mistake but he had already shouted at us. By this time we just wanted to get the check and get the hell out. We are not sorry that we did not leave any tip. We did not get bad service, we were shouted at and patronised. We feel they did not deserve any cent more than the food which we did enjoy. Overall, my dfriend and I (both foreigners) were severely mistreated by the staff. We were outraged as we have not seen this kind of service anywhere, in Paris, in the world. We have tried several restaurants in France so we know this was an unfortunate mistake. The seafood platter is pretty good, get the 59€ one, you get a good amount to snack and drink on, it says for one, but plenty to share with 3 people or more. Service is good, people are friendly. Near a busy area. I think people give low scores because they went for hot foods.... oysters, clams, mussels all very fresh, crab was filled with roe. read more

Visited Paris for two weeks in Nov 2011. Dined here for dinner once and once just for dessert. We experienced excellent and friendly service all over Paris. ... except here We speak French, yet staff at Au Chien Qui Fume automatically switched to English (based on my partner's last name, we presume, which is very Anglo-sounding) and stayed in English even when we spoke French back to them. There's a certain je ne sais quoi arrogance here ... the stereotypical arrogance that one hears about, but we didn't experience anywhere else in Paris (well, except one haggard underwear saleswoman at Galleries Lafayette). The food here was so-so. The desserts are not their forte. The St Jacques (scallops) were amazingly delicious, as was the French onion soup. The rack of lamb ... nice, but not the best. Overall, nice food, but the attitude is not justified. read more

My two friends and ate at this restaurant at 3AM in the summer of 1965. We went for the onion soup for which the restaurant was famous after walking around the open air market which is no more. I noted that one woman commented that there was an air of arrogance in the restaurant that she found nowhere else in Paris. When I paid my bill that morning all I had was a 50 franc note which was the equivalent of a $50 bill at the time. The waitress took my 50 franc note and held it above her head and marched around the restaurant screaming "Capitalist, capitalist, capitalist...." Not what I would call ambiance. read more

Super family friendly! We were traveling with our three little ones, and the staff was very friendly and loved playing with our kids. They seemed to genuinely enjoy having us in their restaurant, which is quite refreshing when you're a large family. My wife and I enjoyed the French onion soup, and our kids liked the salmon pasta.
